Foreword In the semester prior to graduation, every AUC student is required to carry out an independent research project within their intended major (Sciences, Social Sciences or Human- ities), referred to as the Capstone. This project is meant to have students engage with the current academic dialogue within their fields. With this year’e™s Capstone Issue, which includes six capstones across all three majors from students from the class of 2018, InPrint showcases the ability of AUC students to generate insightful interdisciplinary research. Additionally, all Capstones published in this issue have undergone a meticulous editing process carried out by the Editorial Board of InPrint to further improve their clarity. A workshop providing the basic tools for this editing process was provided by lecturer and linguist Dr. Lotte Tavecchio. Finally, assistance with the LATEX 2ε formatting for this is- sue was graciously provided by former Editor-in-Chief Phillip Hartout. Drawing on scholarship in media, as well as peace and conflict studies, this thesis conducts visual and discursive analyses of relevant images, events, and texts, specifically looking at the Alternative Right’s behavior on the Internet, as well its coverage by traditional news media. The analyses reveal that through narrative building and collective identity construction the movement propagates a worldview in which white people are oppressed, and herein places an implicit call for the collective it has constructed to stand up against the oppressor. The Alternative right’s knowledge of the principles of traditional media discourse allows it to manipulate the media in such a way that the violence perpetrated at the hands of its sympathizers is not linked to the movement or its ideology. The overall goal of this thesis is to urge an adequate problematization of Alternative right’s progression toward violence. Because incels are a relatively new phenomenon, there are many gaps in our knowledge, including how, and to what extent, incel forums function as online communities. The current study begins to fill this lacuna by qualitatively analyzing the incels.co forum to understand how community is created through online discourse. Both inductive and deductive thematic analyses were conducted on 17 threads (3400 posts). The results confirm that the incels.co forum functions as a community. Four themes in relation to community were found: The incel brotherhood; We can disagree, but you’re wrong; We are all coping here; and Will the real incel come forward.

A Psychological Profile of the Alt-Right 2 Abstract The 2016 U.S. presidential election coincided with the rise the “alternative right” or “alt- right”. Although alt-right associates wield considerable influence on the current administration, the movement’s loose organizational structure has led to disparate portrayals of its members’ psychology, compounded by a lack of empirical investigation. We surveyed 447 alt-right adherents on a battery of psychological measures, comparing their responses to those of 382 non- adherents. Alt-right adherents were much more distrustful of the mainstream media and government; expressed higher Dark Triad traits, social dominance orientation, and authoritarianism; reported high levels of aggression; and exhibited extreme levels of overt intergroup bias, including blatant dehumanization of racial minorities. Cluster analyses suggest that alt-right supporters may separate into two subgroups: one more populist and anti- establishmentarian and the other more supremacist and motivated by maintaining social hierarchy. We argue for the need to give overt bias greater empirical and theoretical consideration in contemporary intergroup research.

Using the Multi-Contextual Model for Diverse Learning Environments (MMDLE) as a theoretical framework and Critical Race Theory as an analytical tool, this research interrogated the ways in which race and racism shape the experiences of Black students at a uniquely structured PWI focused on social justice. Guided by a critical epistemological foundation, this critical case study addressed the following question: What is the campus racial climate for Black students at a social justice striving PWI? Additionally, several sub-questions, influenced by the five dimensions of the MMDLE, guiding the study were: (a) What historical aspects of the institution informed contemporary climate for Black students?; (b) How did the institutions' policies and practices influence Black students’ experiences with the racial climate?; (c) How did the racial composition of the university inform the campus racial climate?; (d) What did the cross-racial interactions look like for Black students and their peers?; and (e) How did Black students perceive the institution in terms of race? In the study, 24 students, 6 faculty, and 17 administrators with different races, ethnicities, ages, and experiences provided insights into the racial climate for Black students.

    Antifeminism Online MGTOW (Men Going Their Own Way) Jie Liang Lin INTRODUCTION Reactionary politics encompass various ideological strands within the online antifeminist community. In the mass media, events such as the 2014 Isla Vista killings1 or #gamergate,2 have brought more visibility to the phenomenon. Although antifeminism online is most commonly associated with middle- class white males, the community extends as far as female students and professionals. It is associated with terms such as: “Men’s Rights Movement” (MRM),3 “Meninism,”4 the “Red Pill,”5 the “Pick-Up Artist” (PUA),6 #gamergate, and “Men Going Their Own Way” (MGTOW)—the group on which I focused my study. I found some criteria for early- warning signs of antisemitic, bigoted and genocidal activities. I included a summary of neo-Nazi and white supremacy groups in modern American and then moved to a more specific focus on contemporary and prominent groups like Atomwaffen Division, the Proud Boys, the Vinlanders Social Club, the Base, Rise Against Movement, the Hammerskins, and other prominent antisemitic and hate-driven groups. Trends of hate-speech, acts of vandalism and acts of violence within the past fifty years were examined. Also, how law enforcement and the legal system has responded to these activities has been included as well. The different methods these groups use for indoctrination of younger generations has been an important aspect of my research: the consistent use of hate-rock and how hate-groups have co-opted punk and hardcore music to further their ideology. Live-music concerts and festivals surrounding these types of bands and how hate-groups have used music as a means to fund their more violent activities have been crucial components of my research as well. The use of other forms of music and the reactions of non-hate-based artists are also included. The use of the internet, social media and other digital means has also be a primary point of discussion.
