Weston Favell School, Northampton A ULT Academy Consultation Report, December 2009 A ULT ACADEMY FOR WESTON FAVELL SCHOOL NORTHAMPTON, NORTHAMPTONSHIRE CONSULTATION REPORT “The school has had a poor reputation and the academy will give it a fresh start” (a significant stakeholder). 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Proposal to replace Weston Favell School with a ULT academy This report summarises the findings of an extensive public consultation into Northamptonshire County Council‟s (NCC) proposal to replace Weston Favell School (WFS) in East Northampton with an academy, catering for 1,650 young people aged 11-18 years. The consultation process has been conducted by DJB Consultancy, Independent Consultants on behalf of the United Learning Trust (ULT), sponsor of the proposed Weston Favell Academy, and the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). The consultation ran for a four week period from 7th September to 2nd October 2009 and held joint public and key stakeholder meetings with NCC Officers. The consultants have also independently sought the views of a wide cross-section of people in the target school community – parents, students, staff, Governors, key education stakeholders, statutory support organisations and trades unions. The case for this academy proposal is strongly supported by NCC, which wishes to see a greater acceleration and sustainability in WFS‟s performance, despite its recent improved achievements at GCSE (30% of students achieved five or more A*- C grades including English and maths in the first year of a three-year National Challenge programme). However, WFS‟s governors and a majority of staff, students and parents are against this academy proposal. -

It has been a pleasure, as Senior School Improvement Manager at the Local Authority, to work in close partnership with Achievement for All on this exciting project to capture that good practice. A range of schools in different phases, circumstances and sizes have been involved in this project and this publication offers a case study from each of those schools. This can only be a snapshot, and I am sure that there are many schools out there in our County offering equally interesting pupil premium funded provision who, for one reason or another, did not volunteer for the project – but thank you, enormously, to those who did. The principle of capturing good practice and disseminating it is one which is frequently overlooked in education, as we often become snarled in the expediency of having to “solve things” using more short term strategies. -

United Learning sets out to provide all children and young people with a broad and deep education which prepares them to succeed in life. We were founded 130 years ago to provide education for girls when it was in short supply, and the independent schools which started the Group remain an important part of it today. In the last 15 years, we have become one of the biggest academy groups in the country – still focusing on the original aims of the academy programme – turning around poor schools serving poor communities. As Deputy Director – North, you will have a central role in raising standards in our schools across the north. We are determined to raise attainment and ensure that children make exceptional progress. A guide for Year 7 parents and carers School day in secondary phase Registration and assemblies start at 8:45am. We expect all students to be in school by 8:40am at the latest. We believe punctuality is an important personal quality and a valuable professional attribute. Parents will be informed of this detention via School Comms. Students will also be reminded that failure to attend the detention will result in a 60-minute after school detention the following day. Students will also receive a negative behaviour point for lateness (without a valid reason) and a further point if they do not attend their detention.
