Parshah Eikev (Eikev — /Deuteronomy 7:12-11:25 pg 980) In the Sidrah, continues his farewell talks to Israel and asks them to remember their past as they begin their future. They would be settling in a land that would offer plenty of water, crops, and fulfill all of their needs — they must remember Who is the Provider of all this. They must not take it for granted or think that it was their own cleverness that obtained all these good things. Without G-d they were helpless and it is He who is responsible for their survival and success. The only thing G-d asks of them in exchange for bounty and blessings is to love and serve Him and live by the commandments which He revealed to them. In Today’s Haftarah( Isaiah 49:14 — 51:3; pg 1197) In the Haftarah, Isaiah brings a message of consolation and hope to the in their Babylonian exile. Nearly forty have passed since they had been uprooted from Zion. Their hope for return to their land which has been promised by earlier Prophets was not yet fulfilled. Their faith in G-d and His ability to redeem was weakening. The Prophet Isaiah speaks to them in powerful words. G-d has not forgotten His people. He has not deserted them at all. Soon Israel would be restored to glory among the nations. Very soon now, the rulers of other peoples would recognize G-d’s support of His people and their greatness as a nation. There is an unbreakable bond between G-d and Israel. It was a bond made long ago with their ancestor . It had never been broken even by their exile to a foreign land. It was a bond beyond boundaries. The Sidrah speaks of Israel’s relationship with the people of Canaan, and the need to maintain their faith and laws in spite of the idol worshipers among whom they will be living. The Haftarah reassures Israel that the Covenant is still binding between G-d and the people, despite their exile among strangers in .
