Gjlgbcfyj d gtxfnm% 14.06.00 Nbhf;% 3 000 ”rp= This brings me to my Pick of the Litter for SRCD Wave Five: MP-1020 EXPLOSIVE KATE You Are Not a Winner SRCD is solid, solid stuff from a band that has been around the block. EK has a couple DIY-flavored singles out and recently put out a full length as a 12” phonograph platter. They somehow managed to lose the DAT of the recording, so they’re up Shit Creek in terms of ever jumping that to CD. The five songs that are part of this SRCD were actually recorded back in October of 1998 and mixed a year later. It’s great stuff, kick- ing into gear in a big way with a totally rocking surf song, before switching gears into funny punk, a cover of an old sloppy-and-cool local Delaware band called CORPORATE MUSIC BASTARD, a whimsical song called “Rocketship” that sounds like something Jesse Sutherland of THE AUTOMATICS might have written, and a snotty middle finger to the attitudes of the local scene called “You’re No Good.” EK is all about big hooks, great melodies, and a fun time—punk as entertainment. This ranks right up there with the band’s very best stuff and with you getting five great songs for four bucks, it’s pretty tough to miss. I took so long getting this catalog together that Wave Six has also rolled up on the beach. Probably the best wave to date when you get right down to it, all three of these releases are worth about twice the price tag if you’re a fan of poppy punk rock. Let’s start with MP-1012 DARLINGTON Live Dallas 1999 SRCD. Twelve live tracks from an excellent show in their home stomping grounds, thirty minutes of rock. Sonically, if the live section of the SICKO CD is an “A” and the BORIS THE SPRINKLER SRCD is a “C” and the VML Live 7”ers are in the “D” to “F” range, this recording is a solid C+, maybe sneaking into the B- zone. A nice mix of old originals, new originals, and cool covers—not one but two RAMONES songs and a smokin’ cover of “Time Warp.” If you like your three chord post-SCREECHING WEASEL punk rock served up hot, DARLINGTON is gonna become one of your favorite bands. This kicks hard, the between-song banter is entertaining, it sounds good, and it’s only four dollars—pretty much a no brainer. And, believe it or not, that red hot smoker is the weakest of the wave! My Pick of the Litter for Wave Six is MP-1023 PHILIACS Don’t Touch Me SRCD. Actually, I can make a bigger statement than that: this is my favorite of the 19 SRCDs that I’ve put out to date! If you understand the Mutant Pop Sound, such as it is, you know it kinda starts with the power and brains of UNDERHAND, develops shy-guy appeal with AFTER SCHOOL SPECIAL, hooks and harmonies with THE AUTOMATICS, depth with THE CONNIE DUNGS, before forlorn, naivé, shy-guy appeal reasserts itself with THE PEABODYS. There are lots of great bands and fun twists and turns along the way, but to me that’s the main path of devel- opment of the label-sound. Groups like EGGHEAD and THE KUNG FU MONKEYS and THE PROMS and DIRT BIKE ANNIE all fit in and make perfect sense within that framework. Well, the PHILIACS—a young band from Alta Loma, California—are right down Main Street of Mutant Pop Central. Eight songs, gargantuan buzzing hooks, shy-guy appeal, sweet vocals and harmonies over blistering, loud guitars. An absolutely ESSENTIAL release, rocking and charming and pure! Send four bucks now and a thank you note later. Which leaves me in the tough position of having to say, “Oh, yeah, and I’ve incidentally put out the landmark debut release of Ohio pop-punk powerhouse THE HITCHCOCKS.” Precisely: MP-1024 THE HITCHCOCKS Psyche! SRCD. The band recorded a bunch of songs, basically a full album, and I was allowed to cherry-pick smash hits and to assemble a fifteen minute chunk of joy for this release.

MutantMutant PopPop C a t a l o g ONCE AGAIN IN THE ULTRA-TRADITIONALIST PHOTOCOPIED FORMAT! #38 This catalog is so far over due that the phrase “late” doesn’t begin to do the matter justice. Rather than spend this entire page offering up a wave of excuses and explanations—some lame, some valid—I’ll just refer anyone who cares to the Mutant Pop website: http://www.mutantpop.com, then click INTERVIEWS and select interview no. 10. That’s as complete a recita- tion of my discouragements and failings as anything.... I’m very sorry for any inconvenience that the “18 months of sloth” has caused. I’m actually a little amazed that I’m back with full avidity doing label stuff again—orders are shipping on time, and new stuff is once again being accumulated for the inventory here. The next wave of SRCDs is, at long last, in preparation— apologies and thanks are especially due to the long-suffering SRCD subscribers who have been patiently twiddling their thumbs waiting for me to get it back in gear. I thank you for your tolerance and kindness. While I may have earned a failing grade for my (non-)effort with Mutant Pop in 2001, the year was not a total loss. There may AttentionAttention DeficitDeficit have been only two MP releases for all of 2001, but they both kicked some major boo-tay... This course situates the activity of listening to punk music in its broader cultural ideologies, such as the DIY (do-it-yourself) ideal, which includes nontraditional musical pedagogy and composition, cooperatively owned performance venues, and underground distribution and circulation practices. • Universal Salvation and the Problem of Hell John R
Theological Studies 52 (1991) CURRENT ESCHATOLOGY: UNIVERSAL SALVATION AND THE PROBLEM OF HELL JOHN R. SACHS, S.J. Weston School of Theology, Cambridge, Mass. HE PURPOSE of this article is to take a fresh look at the ancient and Tmuch misunderstood theme of apocatastasis. Increasing contempo rary use of the apocalyptic language of hell, hand in hand with the alarming appeal and growth of fundamentalism, sectarianism, and inte- gralism, suggest the urgency of this endeavor. After first surveying the checkered history of this theme from biblical times to the present, I will, second, state and describe the central points of current Catholic theology on these issues. It manifests a remarkable degree of consensus. Third, I shall turn more closely to the highly original thought of Hans Urs von Balthasar, whose approach seems most challenging. Fourth, I shall raise a question concerning the ability of human freedom to reject God defin itively. Finally, my conclusion will stress how a properly understood Christian universalism is not only consonant with several central strands of Christian belief, but is also profoundly relevant to the religious and cultural developments of the present age. THE DOCTRINE OF APOCATASTASIS The doctrine of apocatastasis, commonly attributed to Origen, main tained that the entire creation, including sinners, the damned, and the devil, would finally be restored to a condition of eternal happiness and salvation. This was an important theme in early Christian eschatology.1 Even before the Christian era, of course, the idea of an apokatastasis paritàri was well known in ancient religion and philosophy. In Eastern thought especially, one finds a predominantly cyclical conception of time and history according to which the end always involves a return to the 1 See, for example, Brian E.

Praise for Junana: “In a society quickly shifting into an age of hyper-connectivity, Junana is a timely read. The narrative is as fast-paced and complex as our supermodern, technosocial lives. Caron creates a world so vivid and omniscient that one wonders if Caron is simply reporting on something that is already happening. Caron effortlessly handles multiple perspectives, social classes and age groups. Junana should appeal to educators, marketers, programmers and anyone who is a critical thinker looking for something unique and rich for their cranium to bite into. Junana is an important work that provides a lens with which to greater understand the rapid change we're currently experiencing.” Amber Case, cyborg anthropologist Twitter: caseorganic “Junana was a fabulous book.
