During that time, most of the world has been unaware that previously Mount Cudi had been considered the place where the Ark landed. How belief changed with regard to the Ark's location is a story that involves the history of the Armenians and the changing boundaries of their country over time (Bailey 1989, 58-61). Eventually, Mount Cudi was no longer within the borders of Armenia. But there was a certain logic to the idea that the Ark would have landed on a high and majestic mountain, such as their sacred Masis, the name by which Armenians call Mount Ararat (Dwight 1855; Bailey 1989, 54). This fervent belief that the Ark is on Mount Ararat has fueled many search expeditions, especially in more re cent times. The amount of effort and money poured into these repeated unsuccessful expeditions has been enormous. But we need to ask ourselves: with all the effort that has been poured into the search on Mount Ararat, why has nobody yet found the Ark? If an enormous object like the Ark really is anywhere on Mount Ararat, surely it should have been located by now.

Box 1411 Clifton, CO 81520 - 1 - A Tour of Mount Ararat and Vicinity Mount Ararat is located at Agri in eastern Turkey near the Russian (Armenian) and Iranian borders. As the crow flies, it is about 250 kilometers east of Erzurum, 130 kilometers southeast of Kars, and 160 kilometers north of Van. The main road between Turkey and Iran goes from Erzurum through Dogubayazit (just south of Ararat) to Tabriz. The summit of Mt. Ararat is 5,165 meters above sea level. It is higher than any mountain in the continental United States except for Alaska or in Europe outside the Caucasus. Ararat is a dormant volcano; the last eruption was on June 2, 1840. At present the upper third of the mountain is covered with snow all the time; the last hundred meters of snow at the top have turned to ice. Below the snow the slopes are covered with great blocks of black basalt rock, some as large as village houses. Background Genesis 8:3b–4 (ESV) At the end of 150 days the waters had abated, and in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. Why is this unsolved? 1. Where are the “mountains of Ararat?” - This likely referred to a mountain range, not necessarily a particular mountain called Ararat. Ararat was likely the country or region of Urartu. Urartu as a country would have extended into modern Turkey, Armenia, Iran, and Iraq—covering an area of over 100,000 square miles. This region is referred to elsewhere in the Old Testament (see 2 Kgs 19:37; Isa 37:38 – “land of Ararat”). Modern Mount Ararat is a snow-capped and dormant compound volcano in eastern Turkey. It actually consists of two stratovolcanoes, Greater Ararat and Lesser Ararat. The summit of Greater Ararat is 16,854 feet above sea level, while Lesser Ararat, just 8 miles to the east of it, is only 12,782 feet high. Together they cover a massive area of 420 square miles. 2. The Ark was Made of Wood (Gen 6:14) – how likely is it that a large wooden boat would have survived the elements in any capacity for over 4,000 years. 3. Volcanic Activity – Most modern expeditions looking for Noah’s ark have focused on Modern Mount Ararat as opposed to the greater Urartu region. If Modern Mount Ararat truly were the landing place, how could the Ark have survived this volcano’s numerous eruptions, which continued until 1840? Has Noah’s Ark been found? In the past century, dozens of individuals have claimed to have located the Ark.

The Flood of Noah The Biblical Account Almost every culture on earth includes an ancient flood story. Details vary, but the basic plot is the same: a powerful deluge kills all but a fortunate few. The version most familiar to many of us in lands with a Christian tradition is the biblical account of Noah and his ark in Genesis Chapters 6-9. Gen. 6:5 tells us, “The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time” – and so the Lord decided to destroy all of creation. Only Noah, “who found favour (grace) in the eyes of the Lord” (6:8), was saved along with his family and the animals aboard the ark. They survived to repopulate the planet. The Genesis account says that when the ark was completed, and the animals and the food for all was brought in, Noah and his family entered the ark.
