Tolkien’s Calligraphy INTRODUCTION In his Liner notes, W.H. Auden (2015: 1) confessed that among Tolkien’s ‘many gifts, the three which astound me most are his gift for inventing Proper Names, his gift for describing landscape, and (how I envy him this) his gift for calligraphy.’ It is not hard to see why Auden envied Tolkien’s calligraphic skills: despite the haste and illegibility of many drafts, Tolkien could and did produce several impressively accomplished manuscripts.
