Among the most anticipated is the $1 billion Burj Dubai, a massive tower being developed by Emaar Properties in the United Arab Emirates. Although it is not yet complete, the tower has already surpassed the current record holder: Taipei 101 in Taiwan. The final height has been a closely guarded secret, though the Burj Dubai’s 160-plus floors and spire are expected to reach more than 2,600 feet into the sky when it is completed next year, What's next for Tom Brokaw? ADVERTISEMENTS “It is the modern equivalent of New York in the 1920s,” said David Scott, a principal at Arup, an engineering firm, and the chairman of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. 1 of 3 25/6/08 04:01 Spotlight - A Renaissance for Skyscrapers - NYTimes.com http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/15/realestate/commercial/15sqft... A three-part exhibition in Manhattan at the Skyscraper Museum — “Future City: 20|21” — Weichert.com explores this theme by comparing New York in the 1920s and ’30s, when audacious skyscrapers Your Source for Over 1 Million Real Estate Listings rose up and captured the public’s imagination, with its modern-day peers in Asia, namely Hong Need to know more? Kong and Shanghai. “New York Modern,” the first leg of the exhibit, concludes later this month, Get 50% off home delivery of The Times. and will be followed by “Vertical Cities: Hong Kong|New York.” An examination of Shanghai is planned for next year. As the show suggests, the center of gravity today has shifted from North America and Europe to Asia and the Middle East, where supertalls are rising at a frenetic pace. (In Dubai, the construction crane is jokingly called the national bird.) Supertalls are also going up in countries like India, Kazakhstan and Brazil. The trend, said Carol Willis, an urban historian and director of the Skyscraper Museum, reflects the expanding economies of those regions and their desire to compete for international status and business. In contrast, she says that large developments in New York and other Western cities these days are likely to encounter public opposition — as evidenced by initial public reaction to Forrest City Ratner’s plan for the 22-acre Atlantic Yards in Brooklyn, and Jean Nouvel’s soaring Midtown Manhattan tower, commissioned by Hines, an international real estate developer. And tighter credit in the United States has developers increasingly looking at emerging markets. “People are looking at where else they can put their money to work,” said Jeff Cushman, executive managing director of Cushman & Wakefield, the real estate services firm. The newest skyscrapers are breaking old molds. In the United States, the tallest buildings have tended to be office towers, but in Asia and the Middle East, the towers now going up are often residential or mixed-use buildings, with developers selling off residential units to generate cash flow. The new towers are also likely to be built from concrete or composite materials rather than traditional steel and to incorporate so-called green design features. In many cases, they serve as a focal point for larger-scale master plans. The Burj, for example, is at the center of a $20 billion, 500-acre development of downtown Dubai. Residential units in the Burj are selling for as high as $3,500 a square foot. The tower’s presence has already increased the value of nearby properties by as much as 60 percent, according to Emaar. To get a sense of the pace of change, the Council on Tall Buildings has projected what will be the tallest 20 buildings in 2020, measured by height from sidewalk to their architectural top. (Its researchers included only buildings that have developers and financing and have moved beyond the concept phase, but there is no certainty that they will be built, especially given the current economic downturn. The list does not include developments that are being planned but kept under wraps, like the Saudi mile-high tower.) Icons like the Empire State Building in New York and the Sears Tower in Chicago, which have long been enshrined among the tallest buildings in the world, are bumped from the list. The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, currently just behind Taipei 101, fall to 20th place. Only two towers in the United States make the list. At 2,000 feet and 150 stories, the Chicago Spire, a twisting residential tower designed by Santiago Calatrava that broke ground last summer, ranks sixth on the list. It is being developed by the Shelbourne Development Group, a developer based in Dublin that took over the project from Fordham Development. One World Trade Center in New York, also known as the Freedom Tower, from Silverstein Properties and designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, comes in at No. 11, at a symbolic 1,776 feet. By that time, the fruits of other urban-planning ideas may emerge. At the World Science Festival last month, a session titled “Future Cities” explored ideas like vertical urban farms growing local produce and zero-carbon mini cars that can nest like airport luggage carts when not in use. After decades of the American office building being dominate, in the last twelve years we have observed a gradual but major shift from office use to residential and mixed-use for Tall Buildings, and from North America to Asia. The turn of the millennium has also seen major changes in the use of buildings in cities having the longest experience with Tall Buildings. Chicago is witnessing a series of office buildings being transformed into residential or mixed-use buildings, a phenomenon also occurring on a large scale in New York. In midtown Manhattan of New York City we note the transformation of major hotels into residential projects. The transformation of landmark projects in midtown New York City is making an impact, but it is not at all comparable to the number of new projects being built in Asia. When conceiving new projects, we should perhaps bear in mind that, in due time, these will also experience major shifts in uses and we should plan for this in advance.

A four-sided, pyramidal shape interacts gracefully with an eight-sided geometry at the base. The mixed program, complex geometry, and high seismic and wind conditions of the region demand a sophisticated design response, particularly in terms of the façade Alejandro Stochetti Marc Cerone and the structural engineering, in order to achieve a coherent, crystalline form. Akhmat Tower is a 435m supertall building designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture. It is currently under construction in the city of Grozny, in the Chechen Republic, in the North Caucasus region of Russia. The design of the tower was done during a collaborative process by a multi-disciplinary architectural and engineering team, based primarily in the United States and Russia. During this process, the designers considered many factors including, most primarily, the cultural and historical context, the structural requirements given the high seismicity of the region, and the client’s programmatic needs. The resulting crystalline-shaped tower is both an aesthetic statement and a performative architectural solution which will be a new landmark for Chechnya. “The Design of Akhmat Tower” describes in detail the design process including structural considerations, exterior wall design, building program, interior design, the tuned mass damper, and the use of building information modeling. 1 Introduction In 2014, Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG) was commissioned to design a signature tower adjacent to the Suzha river in Grozny, Chechnya - a Republic of Russia located in the north Caucasus region near the Caspian Sea. This tower is to be a new icon specifically for the region – and is named after the first President of Chechen Republic, Akh- mat Haji Kadyrov [1]. The design was done by a team of over one hundred people, based primarily in the United States and Russia, and utilized expertise from architects and engineers with vast experience in super-tall building design.

The tower caps of both towers accommodate occupancies which are most exclusive and quite challenging. At the same time the utilization has a diversity that includes wellness and recreation areas, pools, sky gardens, restaurants, VIP lounges and bars – all in one open space and under one common and completely glazed roof. The scope of the analysis presented in this paper was to develop an HVAC concept which guarantees thermal comfort for all these occupancies and utilizations with their different requirements, in summer as well in winter. Based on in depth analyses for the building envelope (e.g. glazing, frames, tightness, solar properties, etc.) with dynamic simulation (TRNSYS 16), the climatic concept has been further analyzed and improved by evaluating and verifying the thermal comfort, i.e. temperatures, humidity and air flow, using computational

Philip Oldfield The year 2008 will long be remembered as the start of an economic crisis that has gripped the entire globe – a year that may also have brought to an abrupt end the worldwide construction boom of the past decade that has seen ever-denser cities containing ever-taller buildings proposed from Madrid to the Middle East, from Shanghai to San Francisco. As financial shock waves have reverberated around the world, high-profile tall building projects in virtually all skyscraper cities have been cancelled, delayed, or put on hold in response to the precarious global economic conditions. The question that everyone is now asking – is this the end of the tall ambitions of places such as Moscow, Chicago or Dubai for the short-mid term future? The Antony Wood correlation between tall buildings and economic recession is not a new one.

  • In Sight but out of Mind: the Construction of Memory at Three Once Stigmatized Sites in Berlin and Poznań
IN SIGHT BUT OUT OF MIND: THE CONSTRUCTION OF MEMORY AT THREE ONCE STIGMATIZED SITES IN BERLIN AND POZNAŃ By Stephen Paul Naumann A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy German Studies 2012 ABSTRACT IN SIGHT BUT OUT OF MIND: THE CONSTRUCTION OF MEMORY AT THREE ONCE STIGMATIZED SITES IN BERLIN AND POZNAŃ By Stephen Paul Naumann This study explores cultural identity reflected in the urban landscape at three structures formerly identified with National Socialism: Berlin’s Olympiastadion (Olympic Stadium) and Siegessäule (Victory Column), and Poznań’s Zamek cesarski (formerly Kaiserschloss – or Imperial Castle). My analysis is based on local and state archival work, as well as the examination of literary, visual and media sources in both Germany and Poland. I conclude that after the structures were first used to project meaning from Cold War tropes, both tourism and the enhancement of local identity in the face of European and global influences eventually contributed to the shift in meaning at these spaces in both cities. Poznań’s Zamek cesarski, a palace first commissioned by German Kaiser Wilhelm II, became, with its dedication in 1910, a monument to Prussian-German imperialism in this multi- ethnic Polish-German-Jewish city. Rededicated by the new Polish republic after World War I, the structure was later remodeled by the Nazis for Hitler’s use. One of their most prominent additions is still visible today: the Führerbalkon, a balcony extending off the front of the building for Hitler to watch military parades.
