Film, Literature, and Translation
1 Film, Literature, and Translation: The Reception of Spain in the United States by Andrea Reisenauer Trabajo fin de Máster directed by Luis Pegenaute Departament de Traducció i Filologia Universitat Pompeu Fabra Barcelona, July 2015 2 ABSTRACT There is an increasing amount of research examining the parallels between the translation and adaptation processes, products, and studies themselves. Many Adaptation Studies scholars call for the use of Translation Studies' theoretical and methodological framework provided by the Polysystem theory to help further Adaptation Studies as a discipline. This study seeks to adopt this Polysystem theory to examine both Spanish adaptations and Spanish translations that have been published or released in the United States between 1980 and 2015. In doing so, it intends to not only reveal the preliminary, combined, and reception norms involved, but also to further demonstrate the parallel between these two processes and the value of a Polysystem approach in Translation Studies and Adaptations Studies. 3 TABLE OF CONTENTS ABSTRACT.....................................................................................................................................2 TABLE OF CONTENTS.................................................................................................................3 LIST OF TABLES ..........................................................................................................................5 CHAPTER 1—INTRODUCTION...............................................................................................6 -

English Language Spanish Films since the 1990s Abstract Is there such a thing as “Spanish identity”? If so, what are the characteristics that best define it? Since the early 1990s we have observed a movement toward young Spanish directors interested in making a different kind of cinema that departs markedly from the lighthearted landismo of the 70s and, later, the indulgent almodovarismo of the 80s. These new directors—as well as producers and actors—are interested in reaching out to wider audiences, in and outside of Spain. The internationalization they pursue comes, in many cases, with an adoption of the English language in their works. -

Revista de Ciencias de la Comunicación e Información, Vol. 26, 39-57. http://doi.org/10.35742/rcci.2021.26.e138 ABSTRACT In recent years, the Goya Awards have become a stage for the claims of the Spanish film sector due to the media coverage of the gala. Based on a methodological triangulation that applies case studies, content analysis, and in-depth interviews, this research proposes a new categorization of female archetypes in current Spanish cinema, proves the existence of gender discrimination through the stereotypical representation of women, and analyses whether these archetypes are also perpetuated and disseminated through high-end women's magazines and Sunday supplements. The main conclusion of this study is that the creation of a protectionist law to put an end to this marginalization is essential and a debt from Spain's historical and political past. KEYWORDS: Spanish Cinema, Goya Awards, women, gender stereotypes, demands. RESUMEN Los Premios Goya se han convertido en los últimos años en escenario de reivindicaciones del sector cinematográfico español por la repercusión mediática de su gala. -
Culture Versus Commerce New Strategies for The
Culture versus Commerce New Strategies for the Internationalization of Catalan Cinema Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy At the University of Northampton 2016 Maurici Jiménez © Maurici Jiménez, February 2016. This thesis is copyright material and no quotation from it may be published without proper acknowledgement. Abstract This thesis analyses the potential of Catalan cinema to become a national cinema as the current political climate, with a significant part of the population claiming a Catalan state, indicates the relevance of this examination. Catalan cinema is currently considered a regional cinema, however Catalonia has been defined as a nation with its own language and culture, and therefore Catalan cinema may come to reflect this reality. This work also considers the problems and possibilities for Catalan cinema to attain international impact. This thesis analyzes the distinctions between regional, national and international cinemas in the context of world cinemas and of the relationship between cultural identity and the economic demands of the industry. Some regional cinemas can be seen as national because of the cultural and historic social context in which they develop and this gives them the scope to become international in their own right. The thesis analyzes the policies and international agreements developed to protect the domestic industry against the economic imperatives of a global market, particularly in relation to the predominance of Hollywood films in the international film market and the measures — and theoretical approaches upon which they are based — that nation-states and the European Union undertake to protect their film production and to ensure that it reaches their own audiences, but also is distributed internationally.
