There has never been a singular identityfor th e peoples of ethnic African descent in the Atlantic.2 And although individuals of African heritage adorning a wide variety of skin colors have united under a banner of shared oppression and Africanan cestry, at times these ties of identity have proven shallow with some resenting the confinesof such identityand seeking to escape those strictures. In the eighteenth century binary the severityof the black/white racial identification provided both opportunities and uncertaintyfor et hnic Africans of lighter complexion. 1 The emphasis on social history following the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s shifted the paradigm in historical analysis ofracial groups. Researchers began to study human identityas a process that develops through social and historical events rather than a biological determinant. As a result, historians have subsequently focusedon race as a social manifestation of hierarchical and economic roles in society. I use the term black in conjunction with light skin and dark skin to distinguish between two groups of peoples with different opportunities and expectations in the eighteenth century. 3 People designated as non-whites were categorized as animalistic creatures without souls or humanity.3 Light skinned ethnic Africans could and sometimes did fleeth is category. Individuals who could escape constraining identities leftbe hind friendsand familywh en they discarded an ethnic African identityin favorof white identityand privilege. Light skinned blacks who held onto their African identity were oftendeemed the best and brightest of the group. Even in a group of individuals enduring the persecution caused by their darker skin color, discrimination was not unheard of. Within black and ethnic Africancommunities skin color could divide as well as unite. This was clear fromthe firstEuropean encounters with Africans. It is this question, the extent that skin color divided as well as united the black community in British North America during the eighteenth century that is the subject of this thesis. In the seventeenth century, European naturalists explored foreignco ntinents and encountered people who disrupted their preconceived knowledge of the world. To explain the presence of the non-Christian indigenous peoples, Europeans came into contact with scientificor ganizations such as the Royal

Enslavement of different peoples was a centuries old custom authorized by the lawofnationsandfundamentaltotheeconomiesofempire.Manumission,thoughexceptional, helped to sustain slavery because it created an expectation of freedom, despite the fact that the freed received punitive consequences. In the sixteenth century, as European empires searched for cheaper and more abundant sources of labour with which to exploit their colonies, the Atlantic slave trade grew exponentially as slaves became equated with racialized subjects. This article presents the case of Haiti as an example of continued imperial practices sustained by racial capitalism and the law of nations. In 1789, half a million slaves overthrew their French masters from the colony of Saint Domingue. After decades of defeating recolonization efforts and the loss of almost half their population and resources, Haitian leaders believed their declared independence of 1804 was insufficient, so in 1825 they reluctantly accepted recognition by France while being forced to pay an onerous indemnity debt. Though Haiti was manumitted through the promise of a debt payment, at the same time the new state was re-enslaved as France’s commercial colony. The indemnity debt had consequences for Haiti well into the current century, as today Haiti is one of the poorest and most dependent nations in the world.

Reviewed by Karolyn Smardz Frost (Atkinson College School of Arts and Letters, York University) Published on H-Canada (July, 2008) Recreating the Black Refugees Blacks on the Border: The Black Refugees in British North America, 1815-1860 is a wonderful book. Far more than the sum of its parts, this slim volume focuses on several critical themes while expertly detailing the history of an important segment of the African Diaspora. Harvey Amani Whitfield, an assistant professor at the University of Vermont, demonstrates how African Americans from different parts of the United States, slave and free, who fought in the British forces in the War of 1812 came to found families, cultural institutions, and communities on Nova Scotia's inhospitable soil. He further details their subsequent development as a community and as a new, hybrid culture. This, Whitfield maintains, came about largely because of the hardships the so-called Black Refugees faced, not the least of which was the unrelenting and pervasively discriminatory treatment these brave and hardworking people encountered in their adopted Maritime home. The story of Nova Scotia's Black Refugees is generally less well known than that of the earlier migrants from the United States, the Black Loyalists.

A familiar if partially discredited answer would be that Europeans’ guns, steel, ships, alphabetic writing, and perhaps animal dom- esticates, aided and abetted by ‘germs,’ inevitably led them to rule in the Americas and Africa.1 But what if we asked that question with a more suitably generous definition of technology, a definition that would allow for the inclusion of cultivated or even foraged plants as well as prepared foods, one that also allows for communication devices and lit- eracies, auditory and kinesthetic arts like music, dance and prey stalking, and building and furniture technologies such as thatching and hammocks (Figures 1 and 2)? The answers to this question need not nor should not conflict with accounts of (eventual) European and settler-colonial domination, or indigenous adoption of European-originating technol- ogies.

Coclanis Writing on the economics of slavery is in some ways an impossibly difficult task, for the subject’s limits and bounds are viewed by many as virtually coterminous with those of slavery itself. Indeed, such an assignment has become increasingly difficult over time, as economists incorporate more and more areas of human experience into their interpretive clutches. Whereas at one time almost everyone conceded the material realm to economics, but cordoned off spiritual concerns, economists now make claims on such concerns as well, bringing the emotions, the psyche, and even the soul under the discipline’s dominion. It is thus a long way from the ancient Greeks, whose original sense of economics concerned the rules, customs, and laws (nomos) of the house or household (oikos), to Nobelist Gary Becker, for whom the decision to bear children is interpretively akin to the decision to purchase a refrigerator or car, to more recent writers who have written on the economics of attention, interpreted the rise of religion and the origin of fear in economic terms, and linked behavioral expressions ranging from sexual orientation to laughter to cruelty to economic variables. 2 This said, here we shall focus on issues of traditional concern to economic historians of slavery, to wit: the origins of and motivations/rationales for slavery; pattern and variation in the institution both across space and over time; questions relating to slavery’s profitability; the developmental effects of slavery; and the reasons for its demise.

    The Haitian Revolution The Haitian Revolution was a social and political upheaval in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (which shared the island of Hispaniola with the Spanish colony of Santo Domingo) during the period from 1791 to 1804. In 1791, slaves and gens de couleur libres (“free people of color”) rebelled against French rule, and in 1804 declared their country’s independence under the original Arawak name of Haiti. The Haitian Revolution was, along with the American Revolution, one of the most significant and dramatic challenges to European colonialism in the New World, and historians widely regard it as a milestone in the history of Africans in the Americas. The Haitian Revolution is, in fact, the only successful large-scale slave insurrection in history, and it is often seen as initiating the decline of the slave trade. Causes of the Haitian Revolution The colonial economy was export driven, dominated by agriculture and trade. Saint- Domingue, with its tropical climate, was developed as a coffee- and sugar-producing colony, and sustained many large and profitable plantations. By the second half of the 18th century, sugar and coffee were two of the world’s most traded commodities, and Saint-Domingue produced over 60 percent of the world’s coffee and 40 percent of the world’s sugar. This made Saint-Domingue France’s most profitable plantation colony. To meet the growing needs of this plantation system, Saint-Domingue’s colonists continuously expanded the number of slaves. Thus, the colonial economy fueled the social imbalance that led to the revolution. Colonial society, a racist society, was at fault, in part through its own rigidity.

But for Josephine Decuir it was not a dream, but a harsh reality. Only a decade before she and her husband, Antoine Decuir, Jr., had been among the wealthiest free people of color in the South. They had owned more than a thousand acres of fertile land along a river in Pointe Coupée Parish, raised sugarcane, corn, and rice, and produced wool and molasses. Their total estate, including real property, machinery, livestock, and 112 slaves, had been worth in excess of $150,000.1 After Antoine had died during the last year of the Civil War, Josephine had taken over as mistress of this once great plantation. But now, at dusk on the second day of spring in 1871, she listened as the final bids were recorded for her plantation house, stables, cabins, machinery, sugar- house, and the remaining 840 acres of her plantation. In a single day the accumulations of a lifetime had disappeared before the auctioneer's gavel. When the final tally was made, she received only $25,752 for her land and other holdings, an amount which failed even to cover the estate's outstanding debts.2 The difficulties experienced by Josephine Decuir were by no means unique.
