Airport Access Road Improvements Project The Airport & Public Works’ collaborative, grant-funded project to improve Airport Drive from Atlantic Blvd up to the Airport Terminal Building is nearly complete! We have completely reconstructed the bridge across the main relief canal, widening it, adding bike a lane, and sidewalks. There is also a new traffic light at Aviation Blvd and Airport Drive, which should make trav- eling through the area more convenient. On top of all of this, the whole stretch of road has been repaved & widened, with sidewalks added under the beautiful, shady oaks.

Colter Hanawalt received the honor of securing a Spanish Coin, dating back to the Spanish fleet wreck of 1715, for the next three months, which represents the agency's commitment to excellence and public service. Lifeguard Tim Capra received a Certificate of Recognition and Appreciation for his life saving efforts and the saving of two lives. He was honored at the May 16, 2017 City Council meeting, where he was presented with the Certificate.

Jungle Club Fitness Complex in Vero Beach recently sponsored a workout session for City of Vero Beach Ocean Rescue lifeguards. The club's JCX program incorporates strength, endurance, conditioning and agility in a one hour session. Our lifeguards need to stay in peak physical condition considering it only takes between twenty to sixty seconds for someone to drown. Guards must run, jump, swim and lift during most water rescues. The JCX program incorporates the types of fitness that our guards use during most water related emergencies. "We realize the important public safety role these lifeguards perform and we are glad to help our community. We'd love to have the lifeguards back for more at the Jungle Club", stated Katie Smith, the Jungle Club's general manager. Page 5 Volume 4, Issue 3 Just over a year ago, Rob Slezak our City of Vero Beach Recreation Director received a phone call from Chuck Brady, Vice President from the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation asking if he knew of someone in Vero Beach needing a field to be built for kids because he had some caring sponsors who wanted to make it happen and dedi- cate it to a great friend. Rob referred Chuck to the City’s partners Chris Thomas and Derek Muller from Indian River Sports Complex Cal Ripken Baseball had been looking to build new fields due to grow- ing children’s baseball participation. Chuck worked with Chris, Derek, Attorney Sam Block and a number of City of Vero Beach staff to make this great gift be a reality. Recently the main sponsors, Cal Ripken Sr. and Kevin Harvick Foundations along with many other si- lent helpers, assistants, sponsors and volunteers gathered at Mi- chael Field to help cut the ribbon in honor of one of Vero Beach’s local heroes, Philanthropist and Country Music Legend - Jake Owen. The Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation and the Kevin Harvick Foundation have donated this field in Jake’s name - “The Jake Owen Field” Thank you to Cal Ripken Jr, Kevin Harvick and Jake Owen and to their foundations and all they do to assist so many communities in- Pictured above (from left to right) is Cal Ripkin Jr., Jake cluding ours . Hurricane Preparedness 2017 This has become a topic that we all feel we are already prepared for. We are all sick and tired of hearing about hurricane preparedness. We have been through it before and we are saying “we’ve got this.” But it never hurts to go over the list one more time. Because if you are an employee that needs to come back to work for emergencies or cleanup, you want to make sure your family is safe and comfortable while you’re at work. You should be able to give your full attention to the job of getting the City back up and running as before the hurricane. When your head is not in the game, workers’ comp injuries can occur. After a hurricane has destroyed your home, you certainly don’t need an injury and recuperation in the mix. It has been 13 years since Frances and Jeanne. We will surely not forget them and they have made all of us a lot smarter. Plus the business community is better prepared with backup generators. Most of us all have a generator at home. But you need to start this generator periodically to make sure it is in good working order. You may have a child who is now a teen and has not been through a hurricane before. Please prepare your family for a natural disaster before it happens. Below is quite a list of basic supplies recommended by the American Red Cross. At a minimum, you should have the basic supplies listed below: · Water: one gallon per person, per day (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home) · Food: non-perishable, easy-to-prepare items (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home). · Flashlight · Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible) · Extra batteries · First aid kit · Medications (7-day supply) and medical items · Multi-purpose tool · Sanitation and personal hygiene items · Copies of personal documents (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies) · Cell phone with chargers · Family and emergency contact information · Extra cash · Emergency blanket · Map(s) of the area Consider the needs of all family members and add supplies to your kit. Suggested items to help meet additional needs are: · Medical supplies (hearing aids with extra batteries, glasses, contact lenses, syringes, etc) · Baby supplies (bottles, formula, baby food, diapers) · Games and activities for children · Pet supplies (collar, leash, ID, food, carrier, bowl) · Two-way radios · Extra set of car keys and house keys · Manual can opener Additional supplies to keep at home or in your survival kit based on the types of disasters common to your area: · Whistle · Plastic sheeting · Matches · Duct tape · Rain gear · Scissors · Towels · Household liquid bleach · Work gloves · Entertainment items · Tools/supplies for securing your home · Blankets or sleeping bags · Extra clothing, hat and sturdy shoes **Article submitted by Chris Wagner, HR/Safety Generalist
