ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: SELECTED WORKS OF COMPOSERS ASSOCIATED WITH HOWARD UNIVERSITY Guericke Christopher Royal, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2018 Dissertation directed by: Professor Chris Gekker School of Music Throughout its over 100 year history, Howard University has produced and attracted many talented composers of many musical genres. Limiting this project to any one genre or focus would have lessened the overall impact of the music they created and the inspiration that has been a lauded part of the institution. The project will demonstrate the various harmonic, melodic, rhythmic and emotional contributions of the selected composers through interpretation of their music on the trumpet. Composers have been connected to the university in three general ways: as students, alumni and faculty; as commissioned artists; and through the performance of their works by notable performers associated with Howard. The pieces selected for this project exemplify a wide range of musical expressions and compositional techniques, and hopefully have been presented in a way that allows the emotional impact of each piece to resonate in a unique fashion. The selected works tended to fall into the categories of A. Trumpet and Brass Works B. Spirituals/ Meditational/ Religious Works C. Popular and Jazz Pieces D. Organ or other Instrumental Works E. Works of Historical Reference or Significance In some cases, certain pieces may be categorized across multiple categories (e.g. an organ piece based on religious material). As this was also a recording project, great care was taken during the recording process to capture as much emotional content as possible through stereo microphone techniques and the use of high quality equipment.

Hap, hap, happy days for songwriter Charles Fox By Paul Freeman For The Daily News Posted: 01/05/2012 12:07:51 AM PST Updated: 01/05/2012 12:07:51 AM PST It should come as no surprise that Charles Fox recently received recognition from the Smithsonian Institute. The award- winning composer is, himself, an American institution, having penned such pop classics as "Killing Me Softly," "Ready To Take A Chance Again" and "I Got A Name," such iconic TV themes as "Happy Days," "Laverne and Shirley" and "The Love Boat," and scores for many films. Fox's success is the result not only of rare talent, but of dedication to his craft. "You never know what the public is going to reach for," he said. "But I do know if I've written a good song and I do know if there's something unique about it. You just have to know, as a songwriter, when you've written something that's special, that says what you want to say. Until then, I'm not satisfied. You keep working on it, honing away.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE SCHOOL OF MUSIC ENRICHING THE AURAL SKILLS CLASSROOM WITH THE INCLUSION OF POPULAR MUSIC TRADITIONS ALISON GEESEY SPRING 2014 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in Music Education with honors in Music Education Reviewed and approved* by the following: Taylor A. Greer Associate Professor of Music Theory Thesis Supervisor Ann C. Clements Associate Professor of Music Education Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. ABSTRACT In today’s aural skills classroom, “popular” music and “classical” music are classified into two separate categories. Because of popular music’s lack of inclusion in the classical canon, such traditions continue to be neglected and underrepresented in aural skills textbooks and curricula. With many students receiving constant exposure to popular music through technologies such as iPods, YouTube, and music streaming, the disconnect between popular traditions and the aural skills classroom remains startling. If connections can be drawn between repertoire from popular traditions and the aural skills curriculum, students are given the opportunity to understand concepts on a deeper level with repertoire they may be more familiar with. This thesis sets out to establish the “canonic” problem in the aural skills classroom, suggesting an expansion of the canon to include appropriate popular music repertoire, while simultaneously utilizing the repertoire of the classical canon. This is achieved through aural skills textbook research, outlining the lack of popular repertoire in textbooks used in today’s classrooms. Additionally, some harmonic concepts frequently occur in popular music traditions, which are also outlined and explained in this thesis.

  • Killing Me Softly with His Song by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel Based on a Poem by Lori Lieberman
Killing Me Softly With His Song by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel based on a poem by Lori Lieberman Strumming my pain with his fingers, Singing my life with his words, Killing me softly with his song, Killing me softly with his song, Telling my whole life with his words, Killing me softly with his song. I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style, And so I came to see him, To listen for a while; And there he was this young boy, A stranger to my eyes ... Strumming my pain with his fingers, Singing my life with his words, Killing me softly with his song, Killing me softly with his song, Telling my whole life with his words, Killing me softly with his song. I felt all flushed with fever, Embarassed by the crowd; I felt he found my letters And read each one out loud. I prayed that he would finish, But he just kept right on ... Strumming my pain with his fingers, Singing my life with his words, Killing me softly with his song, Killing me softly with his song, Telling my whole life with his words, Killing me softly with his song. He sang as if he knew me In all my dark despair, And then he looked right through me As if I wasn't there; And he just kept on singing, Singing clear and strong ... Strumming my pain with his fingers, Singing my life with his words, Killing me softly with his song, Killing me softly with his song, Telling my whole life with his words, Killing me softly with his song.

PopularPopular SelectionSelection ListList 20192019 EditionEdition ANAN ADDENDUMADDENDUM TO TO THE THE PIANO PIANO SYLLABUS SYLLABUS 2015 EDITIONEDITION Preface The Popular Selection List, 2019 Edition is an addendum to The Royal Conservatory Piano Syllabus, 2015 Edition which embodies the official requirements for the piano examinations conducted by the RCM Certificate Program. The Popular Selection List is a compilation of non-classical pieces, carefully selected to suit each level. Students in Levels 1 to 9 have the option of substituting a piece chosen from the Popular Selection List for one etude in their level. Students should consult the Piano Syllabus, 2015 Edition for detailed information on substitution policies. Students do not need prior approval from the Certificate Program to use a piece from the Popular Selection List as a substitute for one of the etudes from the same level. Each piece has musical value, containing rhythmic or technical challenges pertinent to the level for which it has been selected. The required edition for each selection is clearly identified. These editions have been chosen to ensure that students prepare the appropriate arrangement at each level. Please consult the Bibliography on p. 28 for more information on the collections and sheet music referenced in the Popular Selection List. Da Capo, Dal Segno Signs, and Repeats • When performing repertoire in an examination, students should observe Da Capo and Dal Segno signs, unless stated otherwise in the Popular Selection List, 2019 Edition. • Repeat signs should generally be omitted. However, repeat signs should be observed only if indicated in the Popular Selection List, 2019 Edition. Contents Level 1 .............................................................
