    ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: SELECTED WORKS OF COMPOSERS ASSOCIATED WITH HOWARD UNIVERSITY Guericke Christopher Royal, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2018 Dissertation directed by: Professor Chris Gekker School of Music Throughout its over 100 year history, Howard University has produced and attracted many talented composers of many musical genres. Limiting this project to any one genre or focus would have lessened the overall impact of the music they created and the inspiration that has been a lauded part of the institution. The project will demonstrate the various harmonic, melodic, rhythmic and emotional contributions of the selected composers through interpretation of their music on the trumpet. Composers have been connected to the university in three general ways: as students, alumni and faculty; as commissioned artists; and through the performance of their works by notable performers associated with Howard. The pieces selected for this project exemplify a wide range of musical expressions and compositional techniques, and hopefully have been presented in a way that allows the emotional impact of each piece to resonate in a unique fashion. The selected works tended to fall into the categories of A. Trumpet and Brass Works B. Spirituals/ Meditational/ Religious Works C. Popular and Jazz Pieces D. Organ or other Instrumental Works E. Works of Historical Reference or Significance In some cases, certain pieces may be categorized across multiple categories (e.g. an organ piece based on religious material). As this was also a recording project, great care was taken during the recording process to capture as much emotional content as possible through stereo microphone techniques and the use of high quality equipment.

    80sX Let’s face it, the 1980’s were responsible for some truly horrific crimes against fashion: shoulder-pads, leg-warmers, the unforgivable mullet ! What’s evident though, now more than ever, is that the 80’s provided us with some of the best music ever made. It doesn’t seem to matter if you were alive in the 80’s or not, those songs still resonate with people and trigger a joyous reaction for anyone that hears them. Auckland band 80sX take the greatest new wave, new romantic and synth pop hits and recreate the magic and sounds of the 80’s with brilliant musicianship and high energy vocals. Drummer and programmer Andrew Maclaren is the founding member of multi platinum selling band stellar* co-writing mega hits 'Violent', 'All It Takes' and 'Taken' amongst others. During those years he teamed up with Tom Bailey from iconic 80’s band The Thompson Twins to produce three albums, winning 11 x NZ music awards, selling over 100,000 albums and touring the world. Andrew Thorne plays lead guitar and brings a wealth of experience to 80’sX having played all the guitars on Bic Runga’s 11 x platinum debut album ‘Drive’. He has toured the world with many of New Zealand’s leading singer songwriter’s including Bic, Dave Dobbyn, Jan Hellriegel, Tim Finn and played support for international acts including Radiohead, Bryan Adams and Jeff Buckley. We propose a cross-modal approach based on separate au- dio and image data-sets to identify the artist of a given music video. The identification process is based on an ensemble of two separate clas- sifiers. Audio content classification is based on audio features derived from the Million Song Dataset (MSD). Face recognition is based on Lo- cal Binary Patterns (LBP) using a training-set of artist portrait images. The two modalities are combined using bootstrap aggregation (Bagging). Different versions of classifiers for each modality are generated from sub- samples of their according training-data-sets. Predictions upon the final artist labels are based on weighted majority voting. We show that the visual information provided by music videos improves the precision of music artist identification tasks. 1 Introduction To demonstrate the opportunities of a Music Video Information Retrieval ap- proach, we address the problem of music artist identification - the task of iden- tifying the performing musician of a given track. Music Video Information Re- trieval (MVIR) constitutes a cross-modal approach to Music Information Re- trieval (MIR) problems. Music videos like their underlying audio recordings are pieces of art and are used to accompany or augment the musical track. The visual part adds a second semantic layer to the song which may correlate with the other layers or contradict.

The award- winning composer is, himself, an American institution, having penned such pop classics as "Killing Me Softly," "Ready To Take A Chance Again" and "I Got A Name," such iconic TV themes as "Happy Days," "Laverne and Shirley" and "The Love Boat," and scores for many films. Fox's success is the result not only of rare talent, but of dedication to his craft. "You never know what the public is going to reach for," he said. "But I do know if I've written a good song and I do know if there's something unique about it. You just have to know, as a songwriter, when you've written something that's special, that says what you want to say. Until then, I'm not satisfied. You keep working on it, honing away.

Biographical Note by The HistoryMakers® R&B vocalist James Ingram was born on February 16, 1952, in Akron, Ohio to Alistine and Henry Ingram. Ingram was interested in music at an early age and became a self-taught musician, inspired by his musical idol, jazz organist Jimmy Smith. In the 1970s, Ingram began performing in the Akron band Revelation Funk under leader John Birkett and alongside Bernard Lawson, Sr. The group opened for the Ohio Players and performed with a variety of other Akron funk bands, including Axis and the Silky Vincent Group. In 1973, when Ingram was seventeen years old, the group traveled to Los Angeles, California, hoping to find further opportunities to perform. Although the group met with some success, recording the track “Time is on Our Side” for the soundtrack to the film Dolemite, the band was unable to sustain itself, and the group returned to Ohio.
