Geomorphology of thermo-erosion gullies – case study from Bylot Island, Nunavut, Canada Godin Etienne & Fortier Daniel Département de Géographie – Université de Montréal, Montréal, Québec, Canada Center for Northern Studies, (CEN) – Laval University, Quebec, Quebec, Canada ABSTRACT In the valley of glacier C-79 on Bylot Island, snowmelt water runoff is creating thermo-erosion of permafrost wetlands. This process contributes to the rapid formation of gullies in ice-wedge polygons. One gully had been observed since 1999 and had a growth of 748 m since then. The geomorphology of this gully is characterized by an active thermo- erosion zone near the gully head, a poorly-active zone near the outlet and a moderately active zone in-between. Feedback mechanisms contribute to the erosion processes governing the development of the gully, accelerating erosion at its head and stabilizing it at its outlet. Erosion features such as sinkholes, collapses and baydjarakhs were consequently observed in the gully. Thermo-erosion processes have remained active and have had an impact on the ecosystem for more than a decade. RÉSUMÉ La thermo-érosion induite par la fonte du couvert nival cause la dégradation du pergélisol dans la vallée glaciaire C-79 sur l’Ile Bylot. Ce processus contribue à la formation rapide de réseaux de ravinement dans les polygones à coin de glace. L'observation d'un ravin depuis sa formation en 1999 et de son évolution jusqu’à 748 m en 2009, révèle trois types de zones d’érosion caractérisant sa géomorphologie : une zone de thermo-érosion très active en amont, une zone intermédiaire, et une zone faiblement active à proximité de l’exutoire. -

LeBoeuf Abstract Trophallaxis is a complex social fluid exchange emblematic of social insects and of ants in particular. Trophallaxis behaviors are present in approximately half of all ant genera, distributed over 11 subfamilies. Across biological life, intra- and inter-species exchanged fluids tend to occur in only the most fitness-relevant behavioral contexts, typically transmitting endogenously produced molecules adapted to exert influence on the receiver’s physiology or behavior. Despite this, many aspects of trophallaxis remain poorly understood, such as the prevalence of the different forms of trophallaxis, the components transmitted, their roles in colony physiology and how these behaviors have evolved. With this review, we define the forms of trophallaxis observed in ants and bring together current knowledge on the mechanics of trophallaxis, the contents of the fluids transmitted, the contexts in which trophallaxis occurs and the roles these behaviors play in colony life. We identify six contexts where trophallaxis occurs: nourishment, short- and long-term decision making, immune defense, social maintenance, aggression, and inoculation and maintenance of the gut microbiota. Though many ideas have been put forth on the evolution of trophallaxis, our analyses support the idea that stomodeal trophallaxis has become a fixed aspect of colony life primarily in species that drink liquid food and, further, that the adoption of this behavior was key for some lineages in establishing ecological dominance. -

It was founded in 1986 as an innovative program that brought together military specialists and civilian academics to focus on military and security topics derived from unclassified, foreign media. Today FMSO maintains this research tradition of special insight and highly collaborative work by conducting unclassified research on foreign perspectives of defense and security issues that are understudied or unconsidered. Author Background Mr. Winter is a Middle East analyst for the Foreign Military Studies Office. He holds a master’s degree in international relations from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and was an Arabic Language Flagship Fellow in Damascus, Syria, in 2006–2007. Congestion Relief Toll Tunnels

Poole, Jr. and Yuzo Sugimoto EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Changing urban land-use patterns have reduced the importance of traditional downtowns as the origin and destination of numerous vehicular trips. Much traffic on downtown-area freeways seeks merely to get past downtown, thereby worsening the level of congestion for those seeking access to downtown. A number of European cities have begun to develop a new type of transportation facility: congestion-relief toll tunnels in downtown areas. These projects appear to be economically feasible largely or entirely from premium-price tolls paid by users. Hence, they are being developed by private consortia, operating under long-term franchises from government. Other keys to the feasibility of such projects are peak/off-peak pricing structures (congestion pricing), nonstop electronic toll collection, and restriction of use to auto-size vehicles only (to reduce tunnel dimensions and therefore capital investment). Preliminary analysis indicates that congestion-relief bypass tunnels for downtown Los Angeles and San Francisco would be economically feasible as private business ventures, if developed along European lines. Similar approaches might be applied to other controversial freeway projects in both cities, and to restructuring Boston's huge and controversial Central Artery/Tunnel project. Congress has already authorized public-private partnerships of this type, permitting private capital and private owner/operation to be used, both for new projects and to rebuild existing highway, bridge, and tunnel facilities. Six states and Puerto Rico have enacted private-tollway legislation under which such projects could be developed and operated. -

For the 2012 television adaption of Sebastian Falks novel Birdsong, producers attempted to build an accurate replica of part of the vast network of tunnels, believed to be the first undertaking of this kind. However for those studying Birdsong or conflict archaeology this simulation provides an alternative immersive experience to explore the conflict landscapes and material culture of the First World War. The simulation takes you on a journey through an underground tunnel network, as you descend underground though a mine shaft and explore the tunnels you can listen to Matt Leonard, conflict archeologist, explain how men survived in this environment. Within the simulation are contemporary photographs and film footage from the Durand Group, a world-authority on subterranean warfare during the First World War. -

THE BIRTH OF THE TUBES by Antony Badsey-Ellis A report of the LURS meeting at All Souls Clubhouse on Tuesday 10 December 2019 Antony’s latest book, co-written and edited by Jim Whiting, is also called “The Birth of the Tubes” and was published by Capital Transport in September 2019. He explained that tonight’s talk would feature many pictures which are not in the first edition of the book. This book is a non-technical history of the social side of the building of the Underground and how people were involved and how the railways were received at the time. In the 1860s the Metropolitan and District Railways had used conventional steam locomotives going through cut and cover tunnels. The tube railways were a completely new system with electric locos running through deep level tunnels. The first tube tunnel was not (as many people think) the City and South London Railway (C&SLR) but the Tower Subway from near the Tower of London to Tooley Street. This tunnel was about 7 feet in diameter and dug fully by hand, lit only by candles, and with very little Health & Safety as we would know it today. Each ring of the tunnel lining was in four parts (three large and a small key segment) weighing four hundredweight (203 kg) each which were man-handled into place and secured with bolts. The shield was then moved forward, about 18 inches at a time, by hand-cranked screw jacks. Spoil was removed via small trucks on a temporary railway and then lifted up the 60-foot-deep access shaft in small buckets using a steam crane. -

As a result, the Book Tower became the fifteenth institution worldwide to join the American company in its ambition to digitize the world's paper heritage. Ghent University Library and the Royal Library in The Hague (14 July 2010) are still the only libraries in the Low Countries whose collections are included in Google Books. The first shipment left on 11 October 2007; the last load of old editions appeared online in 2018. So, it's time to take stock. oogle was founded in 1998 with the mission "to organize the G world's information and make it universally accessible and useful". In the early 2000s it indexed more or less the whole web and opened it up with the PageRank algorithm, which was developed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in the garage of Susan Wojcicki, who is now CEO of YouTube. New sources of information entered the picture. In 2004, by which time the company was listed on the stock exchange, it developed Google Scholar, a bibliographical databank that made it possible to search through scientific journals. It also launched Google Books. Then, on 14 December the same year, the company announced that it would “digitize the ‘world’s knowledge’”. -

HENRI PIRENNE INSTITUTE FOR MEDIEVAL STUDIES (GHENT) with CENTER FOR MEDIEVAL STUDIES (FORDHAM), CENTRE FOR MEDIEVAL LITERATURE (ODENSE AND YORK) and CENTRE FOR MEDIEVAL STUDIES (YORK) SCALES OF KNOWLEDGE: FROM COSMOS TO BOOK AUTUMN SCHOOL IN MEDIEVAL LANGUAGES AND CULTURE 2021 GHENT AND FORDHAM, 18 – 22 OCTOBER 2021 The move in Medieval Studies away from nationalising and Eurocentric paradigms toward the ‘Global Middle Ages’ raises pressing and fascinating intellectual questions about scales of knowledge. How do we negotiate these scales as we move between the micro and the macro? What spatial and temporal scales do we use to study the period defined for ‘Europe’ as ‘The Middle Ages’? These same questions of scale were also challenging a millennium ago, especially in the years around 1100, in the wake of the 1st Crusade, which transformed Latin Europe’s relationship with the Afro-Eurasian space. Taking the 12th-century Liber Floridus, a manuscript created at a specific time and place, as its touchstone, this Autumn School will address the challenge of scales of knowledge in times of rapid geopolitical change. The Liber Floridus is an intensely richly illustrated encyclopedia, produced by Lambert, a canon in the Flemish city of St Omer, working in the early decades of the twelfth century. This Autumn School is organized for PhD- and MA- students in Medieval Studies.
