The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School THE EFFECTS OF INTERFACE AND SURFACE CHARGE ON TWO DIMENSIONAL TRANSITORS FOR NEUROMORPHIC, RADIATION, AND DOPING APPLICATIONS A Dissertation in Electrical Engineering by Andrew J. Alternative materials are required to overcome these limitations leading to increasing interest in two dimensional (2D) materials, and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) in particular, due to their atomically thin nature which provides an advantage in scalability. Numerous investigations within the literature have explored various applications of these materials and assessed their viability as a replacement for silicon FETs. This dissertation focuses on several applications of 2D FETs as well as an exploration into one of the most promising methods to improve their performance. Neuromorphic computing is an alternative method to standard computing architectures that operates similarly to a biological nervous system. These systems are composed of neurons and operate based on pulses called action potentials. -

“Ain’t Gonna Worry No More”: Depictions of the American South in Randy Newman’s Good Old Boys Kate Coleman, B.A. Submitted in partial requirement for Special Honors in the Department of English The University of Texas at Austin May 2017 _____________________________________________________ Professor Coleman Hutchison Department of English Supervising Faculty _____________________________________________________ Professor Matthew Valentine Plan II Honors Second Reader Abstract Randy Newman’s album Good Old Boys (1974) is a southern concept album. Newman employs several narrators on the album in order to explore multiple perspectives and elements that illuminate southern identity. Newman’s observations result in a view of the South as disenfranchised, defeated not only by their regional prejudice and own mistakes, but by moral hypocrisy and abandonment from the rest of the United States. In implicating the rest of the country, Newman indicates that the struggles highlighted in the South and southern identity are not simply a result of regional dynamics, but indicative of larger American dynamics. What’s more, many of Newman’s observations and commentary withstand the test of time, and maintain relevance to political and social dynamics still present today. In providing biographical, historical, social, and musical context, as well as close-reading the album, the thesis not only explores Newman’s methods, but argues for his larger goals. Through analyzing and engaging with reviews of the album, both contemporary and modern, this thesis establishes Good Old Boys’ lasting relevance and legacy. i For my father, who not only taught me how to listen, but encouraged me to speak. ii Acknowledgements Never thought I’d make it, but I always do somehow. -
Mate Preferences and Matching Outcomes in Online Dating∗
What Makes You Click? — Mate Preferences and Matching Outcomes in Online Dating∗ Günter J. Hitsch Ali Hortaçsu Dan Ariely University of Chicago University of Chicago MIT Graduate School of Business Department of Economics Sloan School of Management April 2006 Abstract This paper uses a novel data set obtained from an online dating service to draw inferences on mate preferences and to investigate the role played by these preferences in determining match outcomes and sorting patterns. The empirical analysis is based on a detailed record of the site users’ attributes and their partner search, which allows us to estimate a rich preference specification that takes into account a large number of partner characteristics. Our revealed preference estimates complement many pre- vious studies that are based on survey methods. In addition, we provide evidence on mate preferences that people might not truthfully reveal in a survey, in particular regarding race preferences. In order to examine the quantitative importance of the estimated preferences in the formation of matches, we simulate match outcomes using the Gale-Shapley algorithm and examine the resulting correlations in mate attributes. The Gale-Shapley algorithm predicts the online sorting patterns well. Therefore, the match outcomes in this online dating market appear to be approximately efficient in the Gale-Shapley sense. Using the Gale-Shapley algorithm, we also find that we can predict sorting patterns in actual marriages if we exclude the unobservable utility component in our preference specification when simulating match outcomes. One possible explanation for this finding suggests that search frictions play a role in the formation of marriages. -
Male-Taller and Male-Not-Too-Tall Norms in Taiwan

This study confirmed the prevalence of the male-taller and the male-not-too-tall norms in Taiwan. The frequency of the height difference between a husband and wife within the range of 5–15 cm was higher than what would be expected by chance. This range in Taiwan was smaller than the range in the United Kingdom, which may imply that there are preferred height differences between couples that vary across populations. Aesthetic Spaces in the Fiction of Dh
THE MAKING OF BEAUTY: AESTHETIC SPACES IN THE FICTION OF D. H. LAWRENCE, MURIEL SPARK, AND VIRGINIA WOOLF A Dissertation by JOORI LEE Submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Chair of Committee, Mary Ann O’Farrell Committee Members, Emily Johansen Kate Kelly Kristi Sweet Head of Department, Nancy Warren August 2013 Major Subject: English Copyright 2013 Joori Lee ABSTRACT This dissertation rethinks textual images of the other’s beauty, depicted in works by D. H. Lawrence, Muriel Spark, and Virginia Woolf, whose fascination with the other, called by this dissertation the beloved, urged them to inscribe the beloved’s original beauty in texts. Their works make perceptible the singularity of the beloved, while revealing the writers’ predicament in translating the beloved’s ineffability in texts. Taking the untranslatability of the beloved into consideration, this dissertation traces the ways in which these writers’ texts capture the beloved’s original beauty at moments of revelation, related to epiphanies entering the terrain of literary modernism. My study thereby scrutinizes the dynamics of images of beauty and their impacts on art and politics in the context of modernism. In doing so, I argue that the texts I consider express the beloved’s singularity in challenge of the beautified images that many other artists invented for self-directed purposes in the early and mid-twentieth century. First, I explore Lawrence’s creation of aesthetic spaces in Lady Chatterley’s Lover (1928) in keeping with his desire for making palpable visual spectacles through the text. -
Falling Short: on Implicit Biases and the Discrimination of Short Individuals
University of Connecticut OpenCommons@UConn Connecticut Law Review School of Law 2020 Falling Short: On Implicit Biases and the Discrimination of Short Individuals Omer Kimhi Follow this and additional works at: https://opencommons.uconn.edu/law_review Recommended Citation Kimhi, Omer, "Falling Short: On Implicit Biases and the Discrimination of Short Individuals" (2020). Connecticut Law Review. 427. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/law_review/427 CONNECTICUT LAW REVIEW VOLUME 52 JULY 2020 NUMBER 2 Article Falling Short: On Implicit Biases and the Discrimination of Short Individuals OMER KIMHI Socio-psychological research solidly shows that people hold implicit biases against short individuals. We associate a host of positive qualities to those with above average height, and we belittle those born a few inches short. These implicit biases, in turn, lead to outright discrimination. Experiments prove that employers prefer not to hire or promote short employees and that they do not adequately compensate them. According to various studies, controlling for other variables, every inch of height is worth hundreds of dollars in annual income, which is no less severe than the wage gap associated with gender or racial discrimination. Given the proportions of height discrimination revealed in this Article, I examine why it is not legally addressed. How come the federal system and most states do not view height discrimination as illegal, and why are such discriminatory practices ignored even by their victims? Using psychological literature, I argue that the answer lies in the “naming” of this phenomenon. We fail to recognize height discrimination because it does not fit our mental template of discrimination. The characteristics we usually associate with discrimination—intentional behavior, clear harm, specific perpetrator/victim, and specific domain—do not exist in height discrimination, so we fail to categorize it as such.
