It’s an authentic and inspiring piece. Celebrated and viewed on a summer day in 1953 by Lin Jiyong followed by Lin Jiyong’s seal: 繼蘭書翰 Jilan shuhan Jiyong’s writing Lin Jiyong (1897-1985) notes: Wang Shimin moved to a place called Xitian 西田 or West Fields when he retired. Wu Hufan’s colophon 奉常此冊堪与董玄宰並美,直入元人之室也。余 所見諸本俱出其下。壬申三月吴湖帆敬觀 This album by the Minister of Worshiip is just as good as that by Dong Xuanzhi [Dong Qichang, 1555-1636] in that it directly enters the realm of Yuan-dynasty painting. All of the other albums I have viewed pale in comparison. The two leafs imitating Ni Yu [Ni Zan] and Dachi [Huang Gongwang] surpass the marvelous and enter into the mysterious. It is not easy to accomplish this much without seeing many marvelous traces from worthy painters of the Yuan dynasty. Although my kind brother Boyuan [Ruan Yuan] encountered this piece by chance, it also should be said that he and the painting were brought together by the deep fate of ink. Please treasure this masterpiece. He excelled in painting and poetry as well as calligraphy, in which he followed the style of Huang Tingjian (1045 – 1105), while his students included Wen Zhengming (1470 – 1559) and Tang Yin (1470 – 1524). Shen was hailed as the most prominent master of the Wu School of Painting and one of the Four Masters of the Ming dynasty (1368 – 1644). Studying under Chen Kuan (ca. 1393 – 1473), Du Qiong (1396 – 1474) and Liu Jue (1410 – 1472), Shen modelled his paintings on the styles of Wang Fu (1362 – 1416) and the Four Masters of the Yuan dynasty (1279 – 1368), but he also extended his interest to the works of the Zhe School and incorporated its techniques into his art.

It was their pictures, prints, books that produced the first signs of European influence in Chinese Painting, and their writings that turn into the first detailed explanation of the arts of China in 17 th century Europe. But the question is how the two paintings of Europe and China merge with each other and what are the differences between them in terms of painting theory. For this purpose, one example of Chinese paintings of Wu Li (1632- 1718) who was a landscape painter and another example from Casper David Friedrich (1774-1840) from Germany who is known as Romantic painter have been taken. Jesuit missionaries centered around Confucianism that under the leadership of Matteo Ricci after 1592. Landscape paintings were based on Confucian philosophy. On the other hand Casper David Friedrich (1774-1840), a Romantic painter, explains that landscape paintings are the replacement of human actions to express human emotions. The aim of this paper is to make a visual or formal analysis of the two paintings from the 18 th and 19 th century as according to the painting theory.

Reed Copyright by Yanfei YIN 2012 Abstract The establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 triggered a deluge of artistic challenges for the Chinese ink painter. Lu Yanshao (陸儼少 1909-1993), an artist skilled in poetry, painting and calligraphy, had built his renown on landscape paintings following a traditionalist style. As of 1949, however, Lu began to make figure paintings that adhered to the guidelines established by the Communist Party. Dramatic social and political changes occurred in the 1950s under the new Communist regime. The Anti-Rightist Campaign, launched in 1957, targeted a large number of educated people, including many artists. Lu Yanshao was condemned as a Rightist and was forced to endure four years of continuous labor reform (laodong gaizao 勞動改造) in the countryside before finally ridding himself of the label of Rightist in 1961. Starting in 1957, Lu shifted his focus from making figure paintings for the country’s sake to his personal interest – creating landscape paintings. In 1959, the artist completed the first twenty five leaves of his famous Hundred-Leaf Album after Du Fu’s Poems. The surviving fourteen leaves combined painting, calligraphy and poetry, and are considered to be early paintings of Lu’s mature phase.

Folk artists not only painted the screen, a common object in everyday life in ancient China, on the wall surfaces, but also created a variety of paintings inside the screen panels, whereby the viewer sees a painting within a painting. This article, based on multiple field trips, aims to analyze screen-style frescoes in terms of their locations, styles, and unique artistic characteristics such as subject matter, color usage, and brushwork. By studying the influence of literati paintings from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the author also reveals the aesthetic transition from religious scenes to secular life as presented in the temple frescoes in ancient Gaoping County. Introduction The screen, as a common type of furniture and architectural element in ancient China, serves the multiple purposes of shielding from the wind; partitioning interior spaces, most often to create privacy; and functioning as both a painting medium and a decorative artwork (Wu 2009). Mural paintings of the screen have been primarily found in tomb chambers and grottoes dating back to the Han Dynasty, Tang Dynasty, and the period of Northern and Southern dynasties in China.

    Exhibition: Alternative Dreams: 17th-Century Chinese Paintings from the Tsao Family Collection On View: August 7–December 4, 2016 Location: Resnick Pavilion Image captions on page 7 (Los Angeles—June 17, 2016) The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) presents Alternative Dreams: 17th-Century Chinese Paintings from the Tsao Family Collection, one of the finest existing collections of Chinese paintings in the United States, formed over a period of 50 years by the late San Francisco Bay Area collector and dealer Jung Ying Tsao (1923–2011). The 17th century witnessed the fall of the Chinese-ruled Ming dynasty (1368– 1644), the founding of the Manchu-ruled Qing dynasty (1644–1911), and was one of the most turbulent and creative eras in the history of Chinese art. Comprising over 120 paintings, the exhibition explores ways in which artists of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties used painting, calligraphy, and poetry to create new identities as a means of negotiating the social disruptions that accompanied the fall of the Ming dynasty.
