CHIANG MAI GINASTERA INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL 3 Prospectus Although the classical music scene in Chiang Mai is still developing, it is finding grow- ing support among expatriate communities of countries around the world, as well as local Thai enthusiasts. New orchestras have emerged in recent years, and are showing extraordinary potential. However, the musicians rarely have the opportunity to partici- pate in high-profile performances, and have not had the chance to develop the confidence to perform on the level of musicians in more musically influential countries, particularly in Europe. In the 20th century, the Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera put South America on the map in the world of classical music, paving the way for many other South American musicians to follow in his footsteps. Today, these musicians continue to inspire audiences around the world. He is known to have told young students of music that “Your music must reach beyond the country of your origin. Do not confine yourself to boundaries.” Inspired by these words, we are determined to spread the unique artistic culture of the Asian provincial city of Chiang Mai to the world, going beyond national borders as well as boundaries of culture and religion. Furthermore, we plan to invite internationally ac- claimed musicians to hold world-class performances, with the aim putting Chiang Mai on the world stage. In 2016, to mark the 100th birthday anniversary of Alberto Ginastera, we will hold the first Chiang Mai Ginastera International Music Festival. At the international competition, musicians will be competing not over technical skill, but for their ability to inspire audiences to want to watch them perform again. We have made it our mission to discover such new talent, specifically young musicians from Southeast Asia, and support them on their path to reaching the world stage. Words can hardly describe the charms of Chiang Mai—its natural beauty, the kindness of its people, and the joys of interacting with elephants and other magnificent animals have captivated the hearts of many. We will continue our aspiration to hold awe-inspiring events for visitors, local residents, and the participants of the music festival, and use this opportunity to show the world the charms of this truly wonderful city. Annual Report 2016–17 1 2 4 Introduction 6 Metropolitan Opera Board of Directors 7 Season Repertory and Events 14 Artist Roster 16 The Financial Results 48 Our Patrons 3 Introduction In the 2016–17 season, the Metropolitan Opera continued to present outstanding grand opera, featuring the world’s finest artists, while maintaining balanced financial results—the third year running in which the company’s finances were balanced or very nearly so. The season opened with the premiere of a new production of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde and also included five other new stagings, as well as 20 revivals. The Live in HD series of cinema transmissions brought opera to audiences around the world for the 11th year, with ten broadcasts reaching approximately 2.3 million people. Combined earned revenue for the Met (Live in HD and box office) totaled $111 million. Total paid attendance for the season in the opera house was 75%. All six new productions in the 2016–17 season were the work of distinguished directors who had previous success at the Met. The compelling Opening Night new production of Tristan und Isolde was directed by Mariusz Treliński, who made his Met debut in 2015 with the double bill of Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta and Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle. French-Lebanese director Pierre Audi brought his distinctive vision to Rossini’s final operatic masterpiece Guillaume Tell, following his earlier staging of Verdi’s Attila in 2010. Robert Carsen, who first worked at the Met in 1997 on his popular production of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, directed a riveting new Der Rosenkavalier, the company’s first new staging of Strauss’s grand comedy since 1969.

Annual Report 2013–14 1 2 Introduction 4 Metropolitan Opera Board of Directors 5 2013–14 Season Repertory & Events 12 2013–14 Artist Roster 14 The Financial Results 47 Patrons 1 Introduction The Metropolitan Opera’s 2013–14 season featured an extraordinary number of artistic highlights, while the company continued to address the significant financial challenges of grand opera. The Met presented six new productions during the 2013–14 season, including the Met premiere of Nico Muhly’s Two Boys, the first new opera developed through the company’s co-commissioning program with Lincoln Center Theater. The season also saw the first Met performances in nearly 100 years of Borodin’s Prince Igor. Along with four revivals, all six new productions were presented in movie theaters around the world as part of the Met’s Live in HD series, which earned $26.2 million. Combined earned revenue for the Met (Live in HD and box office) totaled $117 million. While enjoying great artistic successes, the company faced challenging economic hurdles, ending with a deficit after five years of break-even or close to break-even results. However, contract negotiations with the Met’s unions, still in process at the end of the fiscal year, resulted in cost reductions to help ensure a more sustainable financial model for the future. At the start of the 2013–14 season, Music Director James Levine made a highly anticipated—and enormously successful—return to the Met after two years away due to injury. His return on the second night of the season to conduct Mozart’s Così fan tutte was rapturously received, as were his performances leading Robert Carsen’s new production of Verdi’s Falstaff.
