CHIANG MAI GINASTERA INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL 1 The Chiangmai Youth Philharmonic Band and Symphony Orchestra Foun- dation (CPO) was found in 2007. Its members are drawn from different institutions around Chiangmai as well as freelance and friends. We have been performing 3-4 concerts every season. To continue to enhance the classical music scene in Chiangmai, this year we are hosting mark as the 2nd Chiangmai Ginastera International Music Festival and Competition 2017. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you to all of guest art- ists that perform and judge in this festival as well as all of the competitors who practice and share the love of music with everyone here in Chiangmai and around the globe. I now would like to welcome all of the participants and I wish all the best and success to the Chiangmai Ginastera Interna- tional Music Festival and Competition 2017.

Sincerely, Chaipruck Mekara

This year, the Chiangmai Ginastera International Music Festival, which started in Chiang Mai last year, is holding its second event thanks to your support. Last year’s prize winner’s concert collaborated with local musi- cians in Chiang Mai, and was a huge success. This year, we have more than 80 participants from all over the world, steadily achieving distinction as an international competition. As the artistic director, I hope that the young, talented musicians of Southeast Asia will transcend many bounda- ries and soar through the world, eventually contributing to world peace through music.

CHIANG MAI GINASTERA INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL 5 Although the classical music scene in Chiang Mai is still developing, it is finding grow- ing support among expatriate communities of countries around the world, as well as lo- cal Thai enthusiasts. New orchestras have emerged in recent years, and are showing ex- traordinary potential. However, the musicians rarely have the opportunity to participate in high-profile performances, and have not had the chance to develop the confidence to perform on the level of musicians in more musically influential countries, particularly in .

In the 20th century, the Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera put South America on the map in the world of classical music, paving the way for many other South American musicians to follow in his footsteps. Today, these musicians continue to inspire audi- ences around the world. He is known to have told young students of music that “Your music must reach beyond the country of your origin. Do not confine yourself to bounda- ries.” Inspired by these words, we are determined to spread the unique artistic culture of the Asian provincial city of Chiang Mai to the world, going beyond national borders as well as boundaries of culture and religion. Furthermore, we invite internationally ac- claimed musicians to hold world-class performances, with the aim putting Chiang Mai on the world stage. In 2016, to mark the 100th birthday anniversary of Alberto Gin- astera, we held the first Chiang Mai Ginastera International Music Festival.

Our first event on 2016 was a great success, and now we organized the 2nd Chiang Mai Ginastera International Music Festival and Competition occurring on November 12th to the 18th of 2017.

At the international competition, musicians will be competing not over technical skill, but for their ability to inspire and attract the audience into wanting to see future perfor- mances. We have made it our mission to discover such new talent, specifically young musicians from Southeast Asia, and support them on their path to reaching the world stage.

Words can hardly describe the charms of Chiang Mai—its natural beauty, the kindness of its people, and the joys of interacting with elephants and other magnificent animals have captivated the hearts of many. We will continue our aspiration to hold awe-inspir- ing events for visitors, local residents, and the participants of the music festival, and use this opportunity to show the world the charms of this truly wonderful city.
