April 2020 WINERY OF THE MONTH ® RealReal Food. Food. Real Real People People..® OLIVER’S IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE SEBASTIANI VINEYARDS & WINERY AS THE WINERY OF THE MONTH FOR APRIL. Sebastiani’s first century in Sonoma winemaking began when Samuele Sebastiani emigrated from Italy in 1895 and started Sebastiani nine years later. A stonemason by trade, he quarry-mined the Sonoma hills for cobblestones that were used to build the streets of San Francisco. The winery was the only one in Sonoma County to continue operations through Prohibition, making a small amount of sacramental and medicinal wines. It has been joked, and perhaps with some grain of truth, that during this time there was a resurgence of people becoming very religious. Samuele believed in hard work and asked the same of everyone at the winery. At the same time, he was a strong supporter of the land and the people of Sonoma. When the combination of Prohibition and the Depression hit hard, Samuele initiated major projects at the winery to create employment for his neighbors. Shortly after Samuele’s death in 1944, his son, August, and August’s wife Sylvia purchased the winery from the estate and began the expansion of the facilities and the product line, adding new varietal wines and proprietary blends. August was recognized as one of America’s most skilled and innovative winemakers of the time. He respected the craftsmen of Sonoma and made use of their skills at the winery; the famous hand-carved Sebastiani barrels, which are still on display at the winery, were completed by Earle Brown in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Retail Savings $11.99 $19.00 37% 2012 Sebastiani Zinfandelproduct-timed-pdf - Sonoma County - "Great Value Zin" from a Winemaker of the Year Why We're Drinking It Cult wineries come and go, following the fickle whims of fashion. Workhouse wineries stick around, producing enjoyable wine without fuss or pretention, and garnering a loyal following while they’re at it. This Zin is from one such workhouse winery. And those who know this Zin from previous vintages have already hit the purchase button. We suggest you follow suit. It doesn’t take a wine connoisseur to recognize the Sebastiani name. This is as historic as it gets in American wine. Sebastiani was one of the first to plant roots in Sonoma County and holds the title as the only estate producing wine right through prohibition. We won’t tell! Their 2001 Zinfandel is a peppery, spicy, full-bodied red with a stick-to-your-ribs quality that disarms even the snootiest of wine drinkers. Out Tasting Panel was pleasantly surprised by the complexity here. Sure, there’s the telltale jammy, berry fruit and black pepper spice that defines Sonoma Zin, but there’s also more exotic notes of forest floor, campfire, huckleberry and earth. It’s a steal and a serious crowd pleaser. Reasons We Love It: The core of this wine comes from three of the best AVAs for this quintessential American grape: Dry Creek (benchland, terra rosa), Alexander (gravelly alluvial), and Russian River Valleys. The Petite Sirah blended with it comes mainly from Stanislaus County, which excels in Petite Sirah production.

  • SEB 15 Cherryblock
cherryblock 201 6 c a b e r n e t s a u v i g n o n T he Vineyard s Since its creation, Cherryblock has been our flagship wine at Sebastiani. The majority of the fruit (85%) came from our original Old Vines block of Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 1961. The wine also features a portion of fruit from younger vines on our estate. Small amounts of Malbec and Merlot were sourced from nearby sites with similar climates and soils. Our goal is to create a benchmark Cabernet that possesses the elegance, structure and terroir-driven aromatics only found in Cherryblock. The Vintag e 2016 was a prime vintage producing high quality fruit. Overall the season was earlier than average with temperate weather allowing for even ripening and balanced flavors. The summer months were moderately warm with few heat spikes. Overall, the mild season gave us wines of ample ripeness and great complexity. Winemakin g After harvest, the grapes were crushed, de-stemmed and hand sorted using our “micro-crush” equipment to eliminate any stem pieces (jags) and botrytised berries. We also did a cold soak and saignée to enhance color and concentration. After pressing, each lot was blended or egg-white fined depending on characteristics. The wine was aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, 77% of which were new. Winemaker’s Notes Complex, velvety and bold, the 2016 Cherryblock delivers a great deal of intricacy and sophistication. The wine fills the glass with deep purple and ruby highlights, followed by intense, concentrated aromas of blackberry, vanilla and baking spices.

  • 2018 Reserve Zinfandel Sonoma Valley, Sonoma
2018 RESERVE ZINFANDEL SONOMA VALLEY, SONOMA COUNTY FRA PAOLO™ “RED SOIL GROWN” FOR OVER 120 YEARS • I would like to call this my “surprise” Zinfandel. Upon first opening the bottle you get the impression that it is a wine of singular offering – of rather closed in nose and rather bashful palate. • Once allowed to aerate in the glass, or half-filled bottle overnight a surprise occurs. The nose opens to a complicated offering of dark cherries, ripe Zinfandel grape and elegant wood tones from barrel aging set this wine apart as one of California’s unique Zinfandels. • The grapes for this wine were harvested from an almost one thousand foot elevation from the Moon Mountain region of Wildwood Vineyards. • Following fermentation, selected lots of this wine were aged for twenty months in toasted American Oak barrels from the Shenandoah Valley. • The wine has a spicy, dark cherry aroma and rich, classic Zinfandel flavors. It has a long, smooth finish that will complement hearty foods. • Zinfandel was the first wine produced by my grandfather, Samuele at Sebastiani Vineyards, and it has become synonymous with my family’s winemaking legacy. We are excited to make this offering available. The wine is fully enjoyable to drink now and will benefit with additional years of aging. • During one of my first visits to the monastery La Chertosa, Fra Paolo served as my guide. Fra Paolo is a Certosinian winemaker, master blender and WINE FACTS delivered me to the cradle of my family’s heritage. Alc: 14.6% TA: g/L Fra Paolo is remembered and honored by being RS: 0.62 g/L VA: 0.82 g/L named to the Zinfandels I produce.

  • DOES SIZE REALLY MATTER? 65 Gallon Barrels
RESEARCH DOES SIZE REALLY MATTER? 65 Gallon Barrels Melissa Bates and Dr. Jennifer Newton www.worldcooperage.com www.worldcooperage.com Does Size Really Matter? 65 Gallon Barrels 1 ABSTRACT An investigation into the use of larger barrels was conducted on a plant scale by Sebastiani Vineyards. Over 50 barrels were used. Twenty barrels were the larger 65 gallon barrels and 38 barrels were the standard 59 gallon barrels. The wine was barrel fermented Chardonnay from Russian River Valley and Sonoma County. Sensory analysis on composite samples showed no difference in taste between the wines. The cost savings of larger barrels can be significant if the right infrastructure is in place to handle them. INTRODUCTION In 1997 we joined with Golden State Vintners to determine if the slight surface-to-volume ratio increase of a 66 gallon barrel would noticeably affect the flavor in a finished wine. Since 1997, the product’s capacity has decreased one gallon to 65 gallons. Before testing the barrels it was thought that the difference in the 7 gallons would not make a significant difference in flavor, but it would contribute to big savings. The standard 59 gallon wine barrel produced by World Cooperage was constructed as normal. The 66 gallon barrel was produced by slightly increasing the bilge size and reducing the chime. The heading size remained the same. The major advantage of the larger barrel was cost. If 1,000 square feet is available to store barrels and two barrels are stored per square foot then storing 66 gallons per barrel compared to 59 gallons would save 47 barrels in total.
