Johnny Rotten of The Sex Pistols, Public Image Ltd., to Keynote PromaxBDA Europe 02.01.2017 John Lydon, better known to decades of music fans as Johnny Rotten of The Sex Pistols, will headline PromaxBDA Europe 2017 in Amsterdam in March, the association announced Wednesday. The British singer and songwriter will discuss his creative process and what it takes to attract attention in a crowded media environment during his keynote session on March 14. During his iconic turn as Johnny Rotten as lead singer of The Sex Pistols in the 1970s, Lydon was widely credited with being a leading figure of the punk-rock movement. According to his auto-biography, "he brought chaos and carnival to starchy mid'70s Britain with the Sex Pistols, then shapeshifted with [his new band] Public Image Ltd (PiL) into a talented free experimentalist." Lydon has continued to reinvent himself throughout his long career. Other keynote speakers set for Europe's largest gathering of entertainment marketing and design professionals include: - Sahar Baghery, head of global research and content strategy, Eurodata TV Worldwide, will help make sense of the "Content Riot" that consumers are facing today. The ICA presents rarely seen photographs and ephemera relating to the early stages of the band Public Image Ltd’s (PiL) design from 1978-79 with a focus on the design of the album Metal Box. Original band members included John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten - vocals), Keith Levene (lead guitar), Jah Wobble (bass) and Jim Walker (drums). Working closely with photographer and designer Dennis Morris, the display explores the evolution of the band’s identity, from their influential journey to Jamaica in 1978 to the design of the iconic Metal Box. Set against a backdrop of political and social upheaval in the UK, the years 1978-79 marked a period that hailed the end of the Sex Pistols and the subsequent shift from Punk to New Wave. Morris sought to capture this era by creating a strong visual identity for the band. His subsequent designs further aligned PiL with a style and attitude that announced a new chapter in music history. For PiL’s debut single Public Image, Morris designed a record sleeve in the format of a single folded sheet of tabloid newspaper featuring fictional content about the band. His unique approach to design was further illustrated by the debut PiL album, Public Image: First Issue (1978). In a very un-Punk manner, its cover and sleeve design imitated the layout of popular glossy magazines. -

After fronting the Sex Pistols, John Lydon formed post-punk originators Public Image Ltd (PiL). Widely regarded as one of the most innovative bands of all time, their music and vision earned them 5 UK Top 20 Singles and 5 UK Top 20 Albums. With a shifting line-up and unique sound – fusing rock, dance, folk, pop and dub – Lydon guided the band from their debut album ‘First Issue’ in 1978 through to 1992’s ‘That What Is Not’, before a 17 year hiatus. Lydon reactivated PiL in 2009, releasing the critically acclaimed album ‘This is PiL’ in 2012. The band continues to challenge and thrive and is set to release the new album ‘What The World Needs Now…’ in September 2015. Public Image Ltd Are: John Lydon: Vocals (1978-Present) After fronting the Sex Pistols, John Lydon formed Public Image Ltd in 1978. PiL went onto blend a variety of different musical styles over three decades before returning in 2009. Outside of PiL John has released several solo records and collaborations. He also brings quality TV to the masses. Lu Edmonds: Guitar & Misc (1986-88) (2009-Present) Multi instrumentalist and former guitarist in The Damned Lu joined PiL in 1986 recording and playing on the album Happy? and co-writing the album 9 adding yet another dimension to the PiL sound. Lu is also associated with a variety of eclectic and acoustic bands including The Mekons and Yat-Kha. Available at: http://scholarship.claremont.edu/lux/vol3/iss1/9 Lalama: Transnational Punk Lalama 1 Transnational Punk: The Growing Push for Global Change Through a Music-Based Subculture Alexander Lalama, M.A. Claremont Graduate University School of Arts and Humanities Department of English Abstract Little media attention has been devoted to the burgeoning punk scene that has raised alarm abroad in areas such as Banda Aceh, Indonesia and Moscow, Russia. While the punk subculture has been analyzed in-depth by such notable theorists as Dick Hebdige and Stuart Hall, their work has been limited to examining the rise and apparent decline of the subculture in England, rendering any further investigations into punk as looking back at a nostalgic novelty of post- World War II British milieu. Furthermore, the commodification of punk music and style has relegated punk to the realm of an alternative culture in Britain and locally in the U.S. In these current international incarnations, however, a social space for this alternative culture is threatened by severe punishment including what Indonesian police officials have label “moral rehabilitation” and, in the case of Russian punks, imprisonment. -

1 Photo: Alex Hurst REDUX This Redux box set is on the 30 Hertz Records label, which I started in 1997. Many of the tracks on this box set originated on 30 Hertz. I did have a label in the early eighties called Lago, on which I released some of my first solo records. These were re-released on 30 Hertz Records in the early noughties. 30 Hertz Records was formed in order to give me a refuge away from the vagaries of corporate record companies. It was one of the wisest things I have ever done. It meant that, within reason, I could commission myself to make whatever sort of record took my fancy. For a prolific artist such as myself, it was a perfect situation. No major record company would have allowed me to have released as many albums as I have. At the time I formed the label, it was still a very rigid business; you released one album every few years and ‘toured it’ in the hope that it became a blockbuster. On the other hand, my attitude was more similar to most painters or other visual artists. I always have one or two records on the go in the same way they always have one or two paintings in progress. My feeling has always been to let the music come, document it by releasing it then let the world catch up in its own time. Hopefully, my new partnership with Cherry Red means that Redux signifies a new beginning as well as documenting the past. -

The effervescence of New York's underground scene was contagious and spread to England with a 1976 tour of the Ramones that was artfully manipulated to start a fad (after the "100 Club Festival" of september 1976 that turned British punk-rock into a national phenomenon). In the USA the punk subculture was a combination of subterranean record industry and of teenage angst. In Britain it became a combination of fashion and of unemployment. Music in London had been a component of fashion since the times of the Swinging London (read: Rolling Stones). Punk-rock was first and foremost a fad that took over the Kingdom by storm. However, the social component was even stronger than in the USA: it was not only a generic malaise, it was a specific catastrophe. The iron rule of prime minister Margaret Thatcher had salvaged Britain from sliding into the Third World, but had caused devastation in the social fabric of the industrial cities, where unemployment and poverty reached unprecedented levels and racial tensions were brooding. -

There are the shiver-inducing grooves of Ghost Vision, Soela and Demuja, the progressive house wallop of Bicep, the leftfield techno of I:Cube, the classic funk of Space, a four track comp of house freshness from the Shall Not Fade crew and tons more. By JOHN BITTLES So, get the turntables ready, pop on your dancing socks, and let us begin… This week we’ll start on a high with the disco-tinged electronica of newcomers Ghost Vision’s debut EP. Thomas Gandey of Cagedbaby fame and Daniel McLewin from Balearic mavericks Psychemagik, Saturnus is out early May and contains two long, lingering downtempo grooves. Lead track Saturnus (Ghost Vision Theme) is a 13 minute long slow-burner which works its way into your very soul. With hints of John Carpenter’s soundtrack work this is a song you can easily lose yourself within for hours if not days. B-Side, Zuul Passage is every bit as good, taking its time building to a beautiful crescendo which will have your heart leaping for joy. Deeply immersive, emotive and surreal, Cologne imprint Kompakt have done it yet again with a record of rare beauty and sonic wonder. 9.5/10. Since its inception back in 2016 British label E-Beamz has been at the forefront of the leftfield house scene. -

BALBOA STUDIO FILMOGRAPHY INTRODUCTION This work presents filmography data from the Balboa studio, owned and operated by the Horkheimer Brothers at Long Beach, California, from June 1913 to March 1918. It is divided into four sections : 1. Filmography classified by title 2. Filmography classified by US exchange 3. List of actors, with associated filmography 4. List of directors, with associated filmography. The research was conducted within the following archives, which I gratefully thank : Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal (Paris) British Film Institute Library (London) Free Library (Philadelphia) Library of Congress (Washington) Long Beach Public Library (Long Beach) Margaret Herrick Library (Beverly Hills) New York Public Performing Arts Library (New York City) Some of the consulted periodicals were English, most of them were American. Since the Balboa studio was fully independent and without any long-term connection with a large US exchange company, it must be emphasized that some pictures, including features, never got a national release. Some of them were presented in England, but not in the US, some others probably only knew a limited and regional release. For example, this is the case of the first five-reel feature directed by Henry King, The Brand of Man (1915), totally unknown in every periodical listed below, and therefore also unknown from the AFI Catalog. It is nevertheless certain that all the pictures mentioned in this document had actually been produced. Two picture mentioned by the AFI Catalog (The Policewoman and The Explorer) have not been included here, because most probably these projects never reached the production phase. The list of actors which is presented here included every man, woman and child known to have been connected with Balboa at any time during their carrier. -
