Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols, Public Image Ltd., to Keynote Promaxbda Europe Johnny Rotten of The Sex Pistols, Public Image Ltd., to Keynote PromaxBDA Europe 02.01.2017 John Lydon, better known to decades of music fans as Johnny Rotten of The Sex Pistols, will headline PromaxBDA Europe 2017 in Amsterdam in March, the association announced Wednesday. The British singer and songwriter will discuss his creative process and what it takes to attract attention in a crowded media environment during his keynote session on March 14. During his iconic turn as Johnny Rotten as lead singer of The Sex Pistols in the 1970s, Lydon was widely credited with being a leading figure of the punk-rock movement. According to his auto-biography, "he brought chaos and carnival to starchy mid'70s Britain with the Sex Pistols, then shapeshifted with [his new band] Public Image Ltd (PiL) into a talented free experimentalist." Lydon has continued to reinvent himself throughout his long career. Other keynote speakers set for Europe's largest gathering of entertainment marketing and design professionals include: - Sahar Baghery, head of global research and content strategy, Eurodata TV Worldwide, will help make sense of the "Content Riot" that consumers are facing today. She will take a deep dive look at traditional and disruptive content, measuring today's effective marketing campaigns and the latest research on global consumer viewing trends. - Mr. Bingo, one-of-a-kind artist & illustrator became an internet sensation and struck a chord with the jaded and keyboard-dependent public when he created a website and invited people to pay to receive his own artistic and comedic version of hate mail. It is called abusive art and it became an internet phenomenon. Mr. Bingo will talk about turning an off-the-wall idea into a thriving business. - Jeetendr Sehdev, author of "The Kim Kardashian Principle" and professor of marketing and celebrity at USC, will talk about the marketing lessons to be learned from the age of celebrity culture. Sehdev has the inside track on how celebrities are using new age branding techniques and social media to transform the marketing values of today. - Mailine Swildens, director, Google Zoo - EMEA, heads up the Europe teams who create content and strategies for a variety of clients including luxury automotive brands, Disney, Netflix and Warner Bros. She will talk about her creative process, how to cultivate fruitful collaborations and the art of the internet.] - Mark van Iterson, director of global brand design, Heineken - will discuss how to keep a brand vital and relevant without changing the product itself. He will show how creativity, design and innovation beyond beer have built an iconic brand with relevance in 192 countries and a vibrantly young mindset. - Ashley Vinson, former head of brand strategy, Twitter, Netherlands & Belgium, will discuss the measurement myth when it comes to social media, including how to avoid huge spikes in social media only to follow with huge falls. Vinson is an expert on how to deliver social marketing that works. PromaxBDA Europe 2017 will feature more than 25 sessions, and will culminate in the gala ceremony honoring the PromaxBDA Europe Awards. While the punk subculture has been analyzed in-depth by such notable theorists as Dick Hebdige and Stuart Hall, their work has been limited to examining the rise and apparent decline of the subculture in England, rendering any further investigations into punk as looking back at a nostalgic novelty of post- World War II British milieu. Furthermore, the commodification of punk music and style has relegated punk to the realm of an alternative culture in Britain and locally in the U.S. In these current international incarnations, however, a social space for this alternative culture is threatened by severe punishment including what Indonesian police officials have label “moral rehabilitation” and, in the case of Russian punks, imprisonment.

Many of the early electronic instruments come about by accident: Elisha Gray’s ‘musical telegraph’ (1876) is an extension of his research into telephone technology; William Du Bois Duddell’s ‘singing arc’ (1899) is an accidental discovery made from the sounds of electric street lights. “The musical telegraph” Elisha Gray’s interesting instrument, 1876 The Telharmonium Thaddeus Cahill's telharmonium (aka the dynamophone) is the most important of the early electronic instruments. Its first public performance is given in Massachusetts in 1906. It is later moved to NYC in the hopes of providing soothing electronic music to area homes, restaurants, and theatres. However, the enormous size, cost, and weight of the instrument (it weighed 200 tons and occupied an entire warehouse), not to mention its interference of local phone service, ensure the telharmonium’s swift demise. Telharmonic Hall No recordings of the instrument survive, but some of Cahill’s 200-ton experiment in canned music, ca. 1910 its principles are later incorporated into the Hammond organ. More importantly, Cahill’s idea of ‘canned music,’ later taken up by Muzak in the 1960s and more recent cable-style systems, is now an inescapable feature of the contemporary landscape.

The ICA presents rarely seen photographs and ephemera relating to the early stages of the band Public Image Ltd’s (PiL) design from 1978-79 with a focus on the design of the album Metal Box. Original band members included John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten - vocals), Keith Levene (lead guitar), Jah Wobble (bass) and Jim Walker (drums). Working closely with photographer and designer Dennis Morris, the display explores the evolution of the band’s identity, from their influential journey to Jamaica in 1978 to the design of the iconic Metal Box. Set against a backdrop of political and social upheaval in the UK, the years 1978-79 marked a period that hailed the end of the Sex Pistols and the subsequent shift from Punk to New Wave. Morris sought to capture this era by creating a strong visual identity for the band. His subsequent designs further aligned PiL with a style and attitude that announced a new chapter in music history. For PiL’s debut single Public Image, Morris designed a record sleeve in the format of a single folded sheet of tabloid newspaper featuring fictional content about the band. His unique approach to design was further illustrated by the debut PiL album, Public Image: First Issue (1978). In a very un-Punk manner, its cover and sleeve design imitated the layout of popular glossy magazines.

    Underground Architects of Modern Pop Music: A Core Collection February 22, 2008, Newport, RI In the summer of 2006 a new music course was launched at Youngstown State University, Underground Architects of Modern Pop Music. The course was a survey of unsung composers, experimentalists, and bands that although commercially unsuccessful by music industry standards, have proven since to be powerfully influential. The artists examined created music for its own sake and recorded and released their music on small, independent labels. In some cases they recorded in their own living rooms or basements, fostering the DIY (Do it yourself) ethic that is now transforming the music business as we know it. The course began with a consideration of the pop music industry, how “hits” are manufactured, the double-edged nature of copyright, and payola. This set the stage for analytical, critical listening, both to the innovators who were virtually unknown at the time and to the chart-topping hits of the time. The contrast between the two was profound and prompted much and vigorous discussion. What emerged is a bibliography of essential recordings, monographs, and DVDs representative of the most influential, “under the radar” artists from the late 1960’s to the early 1990’s, a core collection. Students and scholars in music and an array of interdisciplinary fields will benefit immensely from exposure to the innovations and inventions of the artists and material included here. Louisville's musicians introduced a convoluted, angular, cerebral style, that had little in common with rock'n'roll's hedonistic foundations. Basically, theirs was progressive-rock for an age that did not appreciate emphatic emotions anymore. The origins of this school go back to Squirrel Bait. From their ashes a number of bands were born: guitarist Brian McMahan formed Slint and For Carnation; guitarist David Grubbs formed Bastro, Bitch Magnet, and Gastr Del Sol; vocalist Peter Searcy formed Big Wheel. Slint (101), who also featured drummer Britt Walford, bassist Ethan Buckler and guitarist David Pajo, represented a major shift in musical purpose: they were more intimidating than exciting. The mostly- instrumental music of Tweez (fall 1987 - ? 1989) kept the tension and the neurosis of hardcore but lost the passion and the narrative logic.
