Exotic Sin, “Customer's Copy” Album of the Day: Exotic Sin, “Customer’s Copy” August 2020 by Andy Beta It’s difficult to talk about Exotic Sin, the duo of Naima Karlsson and Kenichi Iwasa, without discussing Karlsson’s prestigious musical bloodline. Her father, Bruce Smith, drummed for The Pop Group, the Slits, and Public Image Ltd; her mother is Swedish singer Neneh Cherry. The spare and spontaneous music on their debut album, Customer’s Copy, on the other hand, draws upon the legacy of her grandparents, Don and Moki Cherry. Don Cherry first made his name in jazz circles alongside Ornette Coleman, but he soon struck out for a rapturous mixture well outside of the tradition. Combining free improvisation, folk, traditional music, and drone, Cherry and his wife pulled from all corners of the globe to make and live their art. That the duo first performed together at a performance celebrating the Cherrys’ unique amalgam of art and music is fitting. The three pieces here continue in that tradition, at times even deploying Cherry’s old instruments. Open-ended yet highly attuned, the 22-minute “Dot 2 Dot” undergoes a rapid shift from hushed to boisterous, its methodical piano chordings giving way to outbursts of percussion, the sound of toddlers attempting transcendental meditation. Elsewhere, the duo draws on the narrow but profound legacy of jazz and electronics (think Anthony Braxton’s exploratory collaborations with Joseph Jarman on Together Alone, Andrew Cyrille’s work with Richard Teitelbaum, or even Don’s duo with Jon Appleton). The ruminative “Charlie Vincent” grounds its improvisations in slow-moving organ tones as woodwinds and thumb piano wander atop it. “Canis Minor” moves even slower, mixing chimes and scraped metal into something alien and beautiful, not so much looking back on that heritage as pushing playfully into the future. https://daily.bandcamp.com/album-of-the-day/exotic-sin-customers-copy-review .

  • The Forgotten Revolution of Female Punk Musicians in the 1970S
Peace Review 16:4, December (2004), 439-444 The Forgotten Revolution of Female Punk Musicians in the 1970s Helen Reddington Perhaps it was naive of us to expect a revolution from our subculture, but it's rare for a young person to possess knowledge before the fact. The thing about youth subcultures is that regardless how many of their elders claim that the young person's subculture is "just like the hippies" or "just like the mods," to the committed subculturee nothing before could possibly have had the same inten- sity, importance, or all-absorbing life commitment as the subculture they belong to. Punk in the late 1970s captured the essence of unemployed, bored youth; the older generation had no comprehension of our lack of job prospects and lack of hope. We were a restless generation, and the young women among us had been led to believe that a wonderful Land of Equality lay before us (the 1975 Equal Opportunities Act had raised our expectations), only to find that if we did enter the workplace, it was often to a deep-seated resentment that we were taking men's jobs and depriving them of their birthright as the family breadwinner. Few young people were unaware of the angry sound of the Sex Pistols at this time—by 1977, a rash of punk bands was spreading across the U.K., whose aspirations covered every shade of the spectrum, from commercial success to political activism. The sheer volume of bands caused a skills shortage, which led to the cooption of young women as instrumentalists into punk rock bands, even in the absence of playing experience.

  • The Clash and Mass Media Messages from the Only Band That Matters
THE CLASH AND MASS MEDIA MESSAGES FROM THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS Sean Xavier Ahern A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill © 2012 Sean Xavier Ahern All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis analyzes the music of the British punk rock band The Clash through the use of media imagery in popular music in an effort to inform listeners of contemporary news items. I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act. Viewing The Clash as a “news giving” punk rock band that inundated their lyrics, music videos and live performances with communication images, The Clash used their position as a popular act to inform their audience, asking them to question their surroundings and “know your rights.” iv For Pat and Zach Ahern Go Easy, Step Lightly, Stay Free. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis would not have been possible without the help of many, many people.

While the punk subculture has been analyzed in-depth by such notable theorists as Dick Hebdige and Stuart Hall, their work has been limited to examining the rise and apparent decline of the subculture in England, rendering any further investigations into punk as looking back at a nostalgic novelty of post- World War II British milieu. Furthermore, the commodification of punk music and style has relegated punk to the realm of an alternative culture in Britain and locally in the U.S. In these current international incarnations, however, a social space for this alternative culture is threatened by severe punishment including what Indonesian police officials have label “moral rehabilitation” and, in the case of Russian punks, imprisonment.

The effervescence of New York's underground scene was contagious and spread to England with a 1976 tour of the Ramones that was artfully manipulated to start a fad (after the "100 Club Festival" of september 1976 that turned British punk-rock into a national phenomenon). In the USA the punk subculture was a combination of subterranean record industry and of teenage angst. In Britain it became a combination of fashion and of unemployment. Music in London had been a component of fashion since the times of the Swinging London (read: Rolling Stones). Punk-rock was first and foremost a fad that took over the Kingdom by storm. However, the social component was even stronger than in the USA: it was not only a generic malaise, it was a specific catastrophe. The iron rule of prime minister Margaret Thatcher had salvaged Britain from sliding into the Third World, but had caused devastation in the social fabric of the industrial cities, where unemployment and poverty reached unprecedented levels and racial tensions were brooding.

  • Balboa Filmography
BALBOA STUDIO FILMOGRAPHY INTRODUCTION This work presents filmography data from the Balboa studio, owned and operated by the Horkheimer Brothers at Long Beach, California, from June 1913 to March 1918. It is divided into four sections : 1. Filmography classified by title 2. Filmography classified by US exchange 3. List of actors, with associated filmography 4. List of directors, with associated filmography. The research was conducted within the following archives, which I gratefully thank : Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal (Paris) British Film Institute Library (London) Free Library (Philadelphia) Library of Congress (Washington) Long Beach Public Library (Long Beach) Margaret Herrick Library (Beverly Hills) New York Public Performing Arts Library (New York City) Some of the consulted periodicals were English, most of them were American. Since the Balboa studio was fully independent and without any long-term connection with a large US exchange company, it must be emphasized that some pictures, including features, never got a national release. Some of them were presented in England, but not in the US, some others probably only knew a limited and regional release. For example, this is the case of the first five-reel feature directed by Henry King, The Brand of Man (1915), totally unknown in every periodical listed below, and therefore also unknown from the AFI Catalog. It is nevertheless certain that all the pictures mentioned in this document had actually been produced. Two picture mentioned by the AFI Catalog (The Policewoman and The Explorer) have not been included here, because most probably these projects never reached the production phase. The list of actors which is presented here included every man, woman and child known to have been connected with Balboa at any time during their carrier.
