The first novel, Chains, is told from the perspective of Isabel, a thirteen-year-old slave. Read the following synopsis of Chains. Then, predict what you think will happen in the opening scenes of Forge. As the Revolutionary War begins, Isabel wages her own fight . .for freedom. Although promised freedom upon the death of their owner, she and her sister, Ruth, become the property of a malicious New York City couple, the Locktons, who have no sympathy for the American Revolution and even less for Ruth and Isabel. When Isabel meets Curzon, a slave with ties to the Patriots, he encourages her to spy on her owners, who know details of British plans for invasion. She is reluctant at first, but when Ruth is taken away and supposedly sold to another owner, Isabel will do whatever it takes to free herself and go find Ruth. In the last chapters of Chains, Isabel escapes from the Locktons and manages to free Curzon where he is being held captive by the British. In the final scene of the book, Isabel and Curzon manage take a rowboat and cross the river into New Jersey. I looked to the water, then to the rising sun, then to the water again. I looked around me – no houses, no ships, no wharves. The sun rose beyond the water, at the other side of the river. I was on the west bank. I was in Jersey. I had set myself free. I stood up, steadied myself as the boat rocked a bit, and offered him [Curzon] my hand. “Can you walk?’ Now that she has escaped her owners, what do you think Isabel should do? A. Leave Curzon and go find Ruth in North Carolina. B. Stay with Curzon, find work in the nearest city, and then go to find Ruth. C. Offer to be a cook for the Continental Army. Justify your answer in a brief paragraph. Now that Curzon has escaped the British prison, what do you think he should do? A. Stay with Isabel and try to find work as a blacksmith in nearby city. B. Join the Continental Army. C. Join the British Army which has promised to free all enlisted slaves. Justify your answer in a brief paragraph. 4 Teacher’s Guide: Forge, Laurie Halse Anderson curriculumspecialists.blogspot.com Expanding Vocabulary Prelude-Chapter V L.8.4a Directions: Read each sentence from Forge. • The Shields of Achilles and Aeneas: the Worlds Portrayed by Homer and Vergil
Vanessa Peters The Shields of Achilles and Aeneas: The Worlds Portrayed by Homer and Vergil The epic simile is a common device in epic poetry; it forms a relationship between two un- likely things and causes one to be viewed through the lens of the other. Unlike a normal simile, an epic simile has a fully developed vehicle that reflects the complexity back on the tenor; that is, an epic sim- ile, in its increased length and depth, can have layers of complexity that a normal simile cannot. The shield of Achilles (Hom. Il. 18.558-709) in Book 18 of Homer’s Iliad and the shield of Aeneas (Verg. Aen. 8.738-858) in book 8 of Vergil’s Aeneid are examples of epic similes, in which the poet takes the role of the god who forges the shield and can comment on society unobtrusively.1 These shields convey different perspectives of Greek and Roman society. Whereas Homer shows the world of peace in con- trast to the world of war to illustrate the tragedy of the Iliad, Vergil expresses Roman triumphalism to glorify Rome and her people. Book 18 of the Iliad marks a turning point in the epic. In it, Achilles decides to return to bat- tle in order to avenge Patroclus’ death by killing Hector. Since he has lost his armour to the enemy, his mother Thetis, knowing that his fate is sealed, beseeches Hephaestus to forge him a new set (Il. 18.534). The god agrees to her request and sets out to work, creating a magnificent shield for Achilles to wear in battle.

This test contains five composites« pilot, navigator-tech- nical, dfficer quality, verbal, and quantitative A If a significant relationship exists between these scores and other indicators, AFROTC could conduct a less ex tensive aptitude testing program at a substantial savings. Research was conducted to test the null hypotheses that there is no significant correlation between the various composite scores of the AFOQT as dependent vari ables and the various subscores and total/composite scores of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the American College Test (ACT) as independent variables. The group of persons who applied for four-year AFROTC scholarships during the 1973-74 academic year was used as the popu lation from which to sample. The data collected and analyzed in this study indi cated a significant correlation between each composite of the AFOQT and both the verbal and mathematics subscores and the total score of the SAT as well as one or more subscores and the composite score of the ACT. Each AFOQT composite except the pilot composite can be adequately predicted from either the individual’s SAT or ACT score.

On Sale Date: November 07, The fourth issue is worse: Stern is abruptly kicked off because his final issue made Magneto too malevolent and the replacement authors write a heavy-handed story that doesn't feel like it matches well with the rest though it turns out, it hits most of the same major plot points as Stern's original script. While Shadowcat might be saved with the Fantastic Four's help, the Angel contemplates a much bleaker fate! Scalphunter, unwilling to let his former teammates remain zombies, killed each of them and then shot Madelyne Pryor in the heart. This aspect of the story was satirized in What The--?! Sinister only cares about his work. While I think the crossover renders the story just a little bit too cluttered to be compared to The Dark Phoenix Saga , it does represent something of a highlight in an impressive run. However, it's no less important to the FF because of a plot line questioning Reed's motives before their initial spaceflight. This crossover is more impressive for introducing a number of significant shake-ups that actually mattered.

HISTORIC AMERICAN ENGINEERING RECORD CHARLESTOWN NAVY YARD, CHAIN FORGE (Smithery) (Building 105) HAER No. MA-90-3 Location: Charlestown Navy Yard, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Building 105 is located at latitude: 42.376258 and longitude: -71.052419. The coordinate represents the structure’s southwest corner. This coordinate was obtained on August 1, 2013, using Google Earth imagery dated April 9, 2013. Building 105 has no restriction on its release to the public. Present Owner: Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) owns Building 105, but the National Park Service owns the machines still in the building. Present Use: Not in use. Significance: The Charlestown Navy Yard’s Chain Forge is significant for its role as the leading manufacturer of anchor chain and anchors for the U.S. Navy in the twentieth century, as well as for the innovations in chain design and manufacture developed by its employees. In particular, the invention of Die-Lock chain by yard employees Albert M. Leahy, Carlton G. Lutts, and James Reid resulted in the designation of Die-Lock chain as the U.S. Navy’s standard and the Charlestown Navy Yard as the U.S. Navy’s supplier. Although production ceased in the 1970s with the closure of the navy yard, the forge retains a nearly complete inventory of the forges, hammers, presses, and other machinery necessary for production. In addition, there are a number of unique extant machines, such as the 1917 Tinius Olsen chain testing machine, one of only two built, and the nearly complete assembly plant for 4-3/4" Die-Lock chain. Historian: Justine Christianson, HAER Historian, 2013-2014 Project Information: The Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) is a long- range program that documents and interprets historically significant engineering sites and structures throughout the United States.
