Bittervoorns leggen hun eitjes in een zoetwatermossel. Dat kan lukken of mislukken, maar in ieder geval is het een hele plechtigheid. Er is vrij wat voor nodig. Het wijfje dat de eieren legt natuurlijk in de eerste plaats. Dan de van niets wetende mossel, die een weinig openstaat, zodat het eigeleidertje in zijn ademspleet gebracht kan worden en tenslotte het mannetje, dat de eieren bevrucht als ze goed en wel in de mossel terecht zijn gekomen. Ieder doet dus zijn deel en doorgaans heel wat bewuster, dan bij andere voortplantin- gen wel het geval is. [...] Bruiloften onder het oog van de dood hebben iets verstolens. Zo was het ook met de bruiloft van het bittervoorntje Blaude en het mannetje Passy. Hij geleidde haar naar een lichte mossel, driftig en zijn felle kleuren sproei- end in het water. Er waren nog twee mannetjes, Roumy en Torquy, die deelnamen aan het ceremonieel. Want die vonden het een zalige liefheb- berij om de mossel te bedotten. Iedere keer als zij ertegenaan stieten en zo veel mogelijk water tegen de spleet spoten, sloot de mossel zich. Zo’n dier weet niet veel, maar wel wat open is en wat dicht. Iedere keer als men hem bestookte, sloot hij zich. Even later ging hij dan weer open en dan bleek het sluiten voor niets gedaan te zijn. Passy, Roumy en Torquy kwamen er dan opnieuw aan, hervatten tierig het aanstoten en spuwen en de mossel ging weer dicht. Dicht, dacht hij dan en hij bezat inderdaad het gelukkig vermogen om die gedachte waar te maken. Als hij dan toch weer open moest en bemerkte dat er in die tussentijd volstrekt niets met hem was gebeurd, aarzelde hij wel even met dichtgaan als de drie mannetjes hun charge herhaalden, maar hij deed het toch maar, al kwam er ergens in zijn vage reageren wel iets opzetten van een indruk dat hij al die moeite voor niets deed. Later ging hij weer open. Bij een herhaling van de aanval sloot hij zich nu wel heel wat langzamer, wel wetende dat hij slachtoffer was van de eenzijdigheid van zijn mogelijkheden en zijn onbetekenende schrikachtigheid. En dus niet zonder gemelijkheid. Toen hij daarna op- nieuw open was gaan staan en er bleek niets gebeurd te zijn, blééf hij open, want hij was nu gewend aan de zachte stootjes van de voornneuzen en hun onbeduidende spuwstroompjes, ook al verdubbelden de drie voorns hun pogingen en botsten Passy, Torquy en Roumy tegen de mossel, op wat zij aannamen dan de kitteligste plekjes waren. Jawel! dacht de mossel dan. Meer niet. Maar dan toch in ieder geval heel duidelijk. Jawel! en hij bleef open. Dat was het ogenblik voor Blaude om haar eitjes te leggen. A. Ik deed dat werk met veel plezier, maar wist al sinds de afstudeerfase van mijn studie dat ik eigenlijk verder wilde in de wetenschap. Ik vroeg mijn afstudeerbegeleider Martijn Dorenbosch referent te zijn op een sollicitatie, waarop hij zei: “Gerard komt hier net binnenlopen, en die weet nog iets.” Na een telefoontje met Gerard van der Velde en vervolgens met Simon Troelstra, zat ik al snel bij Simon voor een oriënterend gesprek. Hoewel ik eerst mijn bedenkingen had bij het onderwerp, werkte zijn enthousiasme al snel aanstekelijk. Mijn sollicitatie was succesvol en op 1 september begon ik met het project “Geochemistry of freshwater mussels as a proxy for pal- aeo-floods”, gefinancierd door BSIK - Klimaat voor Ruimte. The river crosses the Pendjari Biosphere Reserve, a protected area in Northern Benin. The freshwater oyster is harvested outside and within the protected area with increasing human pressure. The current study aims at assessing fishery production, human impact on wild stocks and suggests sustainable management options. Individual semi-structured interviews and monitoring of oyster collection were used to collect data on harvesters’ socio-economic characteristics, biomass production and seasonal income in 2008 and 2009. Mean shell size and weight as well as size frequency distribution were analyzed in relation to harvesting pressure. Oyster harvesting is the main traditional activity of Berba women in dry season, at low water level period. The oyster collectors used artisanal tools such as chisel-like metal, stone-hammer, rope, metal pan and pot.

Received: January-12-2018 Accepted: April-19-2018 Published: January-01-2019 Abstract: The report of the decline in the population of Etheria elliptica necessitate the habitat study of the mussel in river Ogbese and Owena reservoir, Ondo state, Nigeria in order to know the status of the organism within the ecosystem. Thirty (30) specimens each from the water bodies were sampled between May to August 2012. The meristic variables and the condition factor of mussels showed that the samples from Owena reservoir (K = 16.33) were heavier than River Ogbese (K = 8.34). The water quality parameter buttress a better mussel in Owena reservoir, this is as a result of controlled human activities experienced by the reservoir. Nevertheless, the water quality parameters obtained from both water bodies were within the requirements of the mussel. Positive allometric growth pattern was observed in Etheria elliptica from both water bodies (Ogbese b = 3.02; Owena b = 3.01). The flow rate of both water bodies differ slightly, with river Ogbese having the highest flow rate. The study revealed that Etheria elliptica in both study areas were in good and healthy conditions despite the various human activities on the water bodies. We collected wild oysters from the Pendjari River (Benin) and grouped them into small (23.4 ± 5.2 mm) and large (55.8 ± 7.7 mm) size classes. They were reared in cages in the Pendjari River from January to December 2009. Shell height was measured on a monthly basis, and estimated growth parameters were assessed using the von Bertalanffy growth function. Overall, the growth parameter estimates for pooled size classes were K = 0.0718 monthÀ1 and L∞ = 82.2 mm. We estimated the time to reach minimum commercial size T65mm (female sexual maturity size) to be 22 months (1.8 years). Small oysters exhibited a peak in growth rate (2.775 mm monthÀ1) in May, whereas large-sized oysters grew fastest (1.707–2.781 mm monthÀ1) in August–September during the rainy/ flood season.

Lam.1807), its distribution and utilization along the major rivers (i.e. Oti, the White Volta and Black Volta) forming the northern Volta Basin of Ghana. The occurrence of the oyster in the major rivers entering the Volta Lake indicates a widespread distribution of this mollusc in Ghana. The river Oti in the north-east serving as an international boundary between Ghana and Togo, the Black Volta on the north-west also serving as international boundary between Ghana and La Cotê d'Ivoire, and the White Volta running through the central portion, all harbour populations of the freshwater oyster. Etheria sp. has been a staple food for the inhabitants along the rivers where the oyster occur for many years. The oysters are collected from the riverbed mainly during the dry season, when the water level is low using locally manufactured implements like hoes, chisels and hammer. Biochemical analysis of the smoked meat from Nawuni, on White Volta, showed that it contained 40.7% protein, 27.4% carbohydrate, 8.6% fat, 3659 mg/100 g calcium and 2210 mg/100g phosphorus. Proximate biochemical composition on dry matter of the species compared favourably with other edible bivalves in West Africa.

A survey was conducted for seventeen months in 1998 and 2008 to record indigenous knowledge on the freshwater oyster Etheria elliptica in the north of Ghana, with emphasis on its distribution and economic importance. The study showed natural occurrence of the oyster in the major rivers and their tributaries that form the northern Volta Basin: River Oti in the north-east serving as the international boundary between Ghana and Togo, the Black Volta River in the north-west serving as the international boundary between Ghana and La Cotê d'Ivoire, and the White Volta River running through the central portion. Apparently, the oyster is fairly widespread in the north. Biochemical analysis of fresh meat samples showed nutritional values that suggest that the White Volta and Oti stocks are the same. The oysters are sessile organisms and are usually collected from the riverbeds mostly by women and during low water levels in the dry season, using locally manufactured implements like hoes, chisels and hammer to dislodge them from the hard substrates to which they are attached.
