Mollusques bivalves des eaux douces africaines se répartissent en neuf familles. Les espèces appartenant aux Cyrenoididae, Dreis­ senidae et Donacidae peuvent être qualifiées de dulcicoles péri­ phériques, leur aire de répartition en Afrique étant limitée aux marges côtières du continent, exclusivement d'ailleurs sur la façade atlantique, du Sénégal à l'Angola. Les Corbiculidae se rattachent aux dulcicoles secondaires. Quant aux diverses espèces de Margaritife­ ridae, d'Unionidae, de Mutelidae, d'Etheriidae et de Sphaeriidae, elles doivent être considérées comme dulcicoles primaires. N'ont pas été retenues dans ce catalogue les familles composées principalement d'espèces marines et dont une ou quelques espèces peuvent être rencontrées exceptionnellement, mais parfois abondamment, dans des eaux plus ou moins saumâtres. Des renseignements les concernant se trouvent dans les ouvrages consacrés aux faunes marines. Citons, à titre d'exemple Cerastoderma glaucum (Poiret, 1789) et Scrobicu­ laria cottardi Payraudeau, 1826 appartenant respectivement aux familles des Cardiidae et des Scrobiculariidae, signalées du lac Birket Qarun en Egypte où elles auraient été introduites par l'homme (Van Damme, 1984: 90, 91). Ajoutons également Senilia senilis (Lin­ naeus, 1758), Crassostrea gasar (Dautzenberg, 1891) ou Corbula tri­ gona (Hinds, 1843), représentant les familles des Arcidae, Ostreidae et Corbulidae, très communes en lagune Ebrié, Côte d'Ivoire (Zabi et Le Loeuff, 1992). Les taxons génériques, spécifiques et subspécifiques qui ont été retenus, ainsi que leurs synonymies, l'ont été essentiellement pour des raisons de commodité puisqu'il s'agissait seulement de dresser un catalogue et d'indiquer des références, non de procéder à des révisions systématiques de familles. Sans préjuger des conclusions auxquelles permettront d'aboutir les recherches taxinomiques futures incluant les outils de la génétique, il est à prévoir que des espèces nominales mises ici en synonymie devront être réhabilitées, que de nouvelles espèces seront décrites et que de nouvelles synonymies s'imposeront. C'est pourquoi on n'attribuera qu'une valeur indicative très provisoire aux nombres de genres et d'espèces cataloguées dans chaque famille, en attendant que des révisions conduisent à des classifications rationnelles et satisfaisantes. De tels travaux seraient particulièrement souhaitables et utiles en ce qui concerne les Unio- 11 nidae, les Mutelidae et le genre Egeria. Les principales difficultés que rencontrent actuellement les systématiciens des Mollusques bivalves d'eau douce africains sont les suivantes. Les premiers stades de développement, susceptibles de fournir de précieuses indications sur les affinités des taxons, sont très difficiles à observer et ont rarement été décrits. On sait que les oeufs sont incubés dans les branchies qui servent de chambres marsupiales. L'ovoviviparité, de règle dans certaines familles, a été observé par exemple chez Sphaerium hartmanni courteti Germain, 1904 par Daget (1961). Les Unionidae libèrent des larves du type glochidium qui ont été décrites chez plusieurs espèces de Coelatura: C. aegyp­ tiaca (Cailliaud, 1827) par Bloomer (1946); C. mesafricana (= c. aegyptiaca) par Binder (1956), C. kunenensis (Mousson, 1887) par Appleton (1979), C. mossambicensis (Martens, 1859) par Kenmuir (1980) et chez Cafferia caffra (Krauss, 1848) par Heard et Vail (1976) etc. Enfin les Mutelidae produisent des larves rappelant celles du type lasidium des Mutelidae sud-américains. Freshwater bivalve (Unioniformes) diversity, systematics, and evolution: status and future directions Abstract Freshwater bivalves of the order Unioniformes represent the largest bivalve radiation in freshwater. The unioniform radiation is unique in the class Bivalvia because it has an obligate parasitic larval stage on the gills or fins of fish; it is divided into 6 families, 181 genera, and ∼800 species. These families are distributed across 6 of the 7 continents and represent the most endangered group of freshwater animals alive today. North American unioniform bivalves have been the subject of study and illustration since Martin Lister, 1686, and over the past 320 y, significant gains have been made in our understanding of the evolutionary history and systematics of these animals.

The river crosses the Pendjari Biosphere Reserve, a protected area in Northern Benin. The freshwater oyster is harvested outside and within the protected area with increasing human pressure. The current study aims at assessing fishery production, human impact on wild stocks and suggests sustainable management options. Individual semi-structured interviews and monitoring of oyster collection were used to collect data on harvesters’ socio-economic characteristics, biomass production and seasonal income in 2008 and 2009. Mean shell size and weight as well as size frequency distribution were analyzed in relation to harvesting pressure. Oyster harvesting is the main traditional activity of Berba women in dry season, at low water level period. The oyster collectors used artisanal tools such as chisel-like metal, stone-hammer, rope, metal pan and pot.

Box 9517, 2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands [email protected] and [email protected] A 68 mm long left valve of Mutela alata (Lea, 1864) from near Monkey Bay in the southern part of Lake Malaŵi shows well repaired trauma more or less in the centre. It is obvious that the animal has lived and prospered for some time after the event. Speculations on what may have caused this type of damage (predation by Openbill Stork Anastomus lamelligerus?) are presen- ted. This valuable material is complementary to the already copious holdings of mollusc material of this south central African country in the Leiden Museum. From time to time these specimens will be reported upon. Among the freshwater bivalve material there is a beautifully repaired damaged left valve of Mutela alata (Lea, 1864) from the southern parts of Lake Malaŵi; unfortunately the companion right valve is not available. Moreover, we produced the time-calibrated phylo- Host-attraction geny of Unionida and explored patterns of diversification. COI barcode data suggested the existence of 41 phylogenetic distinct species from our sampled 40 nominal taxa inhabiting the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses on three loci (COI, 16S, and 28S) and complete mitochondrial genomes showed that the subfamily Unioninae sensu stricto was paraphyletic, and the subfamily Anodontinae should be subsumed under Unioninae.

The purpose of this paper is to compile an up-to-date list of the modern unionid fauna of Vietnam and its current conservation status. Unfortunately, there has been relatively little research on this fauna in Vietnam. Fifty-nine species of Unionida have been recorded from Vietnam based on literature, museum records, and our fieldwork. Fifty were assessed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List 2016 in the IUCN categories of Critically Endangered (four species, 6.8%), Endangered (seven species, 12%), Vulnerable (one species, 1.7%), Near Threatened (two species, 3.4%), Least Concern (23 species, 39%), Data Deficient (11 species, 18.6%), and Not Evaluated (11 species, 18.6%). Considering the impacts of pollution, timbering, agriculture, and damming of rivers, research on the diversity and conservation status of freshwater mussels is very urgently needed to propose specific conservation measures for these species in Vietnam. If all taxa listed as Data Deficient are found to be threatened, with around 42% of species threatened, this fauna would be one of the most threatened freshwater molluscan faunas in Asia.
