The population sizes were estimated using annual walkthrough surveys conducted according to uniform methods. The chronograms were tested for latent harmonic components. The districts involved in the walkthrough survey were attributed the spectra of population dynamics and eval uated in terms of periods and the power of the harmonic components of each spectrum. It was identified that the spectrum of the population dynamics was comprised of eight pronounced harmonic components differing in amplitude and power; the most powerful components referred to periods of 4.5 and 14.9 years. The rela tionship between the rate and the power of the dynamics of the wood grouse population cycles differs depend ing on the district of the Novosibirsk region.

Four sympatric species of the genus Sympetrum have been investigated by spectral analysis method. The cycle spectra of population dynamics have been constructed for each species; the basic parameters of these cycles (period, phase, and power) have been calculated. Special number cycles have been found for each species. Interspecies differences increased in the direction from high to low frequencies of the spectrum. In the cases of similar cycles, inter- species differences have been shown in the ratio of cycle powers and/or phases: identical phases can indicate the ability of species to increase their number synchronously with any of close species; different phases can indicate the possibility of a small-numbered species to reach its maximum number against the minimum number of numerous species.

ABSTRACT The region covered is briefly defined and characterized as relatively little disturbed. A survey of relevant odonatological literature, including local Red Lists, is given, along with current scientific activity. Sixteen species are indicated, which deserve special attention, one of them, Ischnura aralensis, being the only strict endemic in the region. Some isolated populations deserving protection are indicated. Regions important for odonate protection are listed, including parts of the Russian Far East in which threatened Chinese populations find a northern refuge. Measures taken for nature protection in the countries considered are also discussed. REGIONAL DEFINITION The region's boundaries are determined more by the history of political relation ships between two neighbouring empires, the Russian and the Chinese, and their descendants, than by natural biogeographic criteria. In the north and east it is bounded by the Arctic and Pacific Oceans, respectively. Its southern boundary coincides with the border of the former USSR plus the Republic of Mongolia.
