Source: http://www.ibisweb.it/bcc/agc/index.html 4 Identity Statement Title Sources for the history of the early Irish Capuchins Creation Dates c.1520-1900; predominately c.1615-1885 Creator(s) Irish Capuchins Level of Description Fonds Extent 30 boxes Context History The Irish Capuchin Archives holds a rich collection of copies of source documents from various European libraries and archives relating to the early history of the Irish Capuchins. This collection of transcribed material and surrogate copies of archival sources covers the years from the foundation of the Capuchin mission to Ireland in 1615 to the reconstitution of the Irish Capuchin Province in 1885, and includes documents relating to ministries in Ireland and abroad. It should be noted that this manuscript series is an artificial collection as it is not the result of any one scholar’s collecting activity. The collection was formed by a desire to accumulate a corpus of material vital to the history of the Irish Capuchins. The reconstitution of the Irish Capuchin Province in 1885 provided an additional incentive to those who were interested in rediscovering the history of the friars in Ireland. In 1882, the Cork-born friar, Fr. Benvenutus Guy OFM Cap. (1860-1927), referred to the almost complete lack of written records relating to the early history of the Irish Capuchins. He noted that the ‘Irish Capuchin Province dates back to the early part of the seventeenth century … had suffered many a sad vicissitude … not the least of which was that it was left bereft and destitute of archives and particular historical accounts’.     The Holy See ADDRESS OF THE HOLY FATHER POPE JOHN PAUL II TO THE RECTOR, STAFF AND STUDENTS OF THE IRISH COLLEGE 28 March 1998 Your Grace, Dear Brother Priests, Dear Seminarians, It gives me great joy to welcome you, the Rector, Staff and Students of the Irish College, accompanied by the Archbishop of Armagh, as you celebrate the Fiftieth Anniversary of the granting of Pontifical Status. I join you in thanking God for all that the College has represented for the Church in Ireland and for the Irish community in Rome since its foundation in 1628, and most particularly in the last half-century. It is enough to recall the names of those connected with the College to have an idea of its rich spiritual and cultural heritage: the founders, Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi and Father Luke Wadding; its martyr, Saint Oliver Plunkett; Ireland's first Cardinal, Paul Cullen; and the spiritual writer, Dom Columba Marmion. Their example of holiness and zeal should be an inspiration, especially to you seminarians, as you prepare to make the Gospel better known to the men and women of our time. Your years in Rome enable you to experience at first hand the universal dimension of the Church and to deepen the bonds of communion which unite you to the Bishop of Rome and Successor of Peter. Your understanding of the Catholic faith is enriched through the study of philosophy and theology, the discovery of the Christian monuments of this city, and daily contact with Christians from many lands.     The Letters of St. Gaspar del Bufalo 1786 - 1837 !2 FORWORD In 1968 the Italian Province of the Society of Most Precious Blood published the first volume of the Lettere di S. Gaspare Del Bufalo. This represented the work of Father Luigi Contegiacomo, C.PP.S. Subsequently, Volumes II1 and II2 were published containing in all 484 letters of Saint Gaspar. The work of Father Luigi continues on the letters and other writings of our Founder still contained in the General Archives of the Society. The Parent Corporation of the American Provinces of the Society of the Precious Blood agreed to sponsor the translation into English and publication of the Italian work. A committee was formed consisting of Fathers Ralph Bushell, Lawrence Cyr and James Froelich. Father Raymond Cera agreed to undertake the translation of the Lettere into English. The work of translating the Italian volumes published to date is now finisheFr. Whereas the Italian publication presents the letters in groups according to the persons addressed, we have decided to present the letters according to their chronological origin. As a consequence of this decision the letters are being presented not in bound form but in a looseleaf format. Thus future translations of letters yet to be published can be inserted into the present binders according to the date of their origin. These documents, mostly incoming letters, precede his rectorship by over ten years, and also contain papers from his periods as Archbishop of Armagh (1850-1852) and of Dublin (1852-1879). The other, secondary collection of papers ('New Collection') is treated separately.
