  • Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press 2014
Jan 14 #1 Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press Sherlockians (and Holmesians) gathered in New York to celebrate the Great Detective's 160th birthday during the long weekend from Jan. 15 to Jan. 19. The festivities began with the traditional ASH Wednesday dinner sponsored by The Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes at O'Casey's and continued with the Christopher Morley Walk led by Jim Cox and Dore Nash on Thursday morning, followed by the usual lunch at McSorley's. The Baker Street Irregulars' Distinguished Speaker at the Midtown Executive Club on Thursday evening was James O'Brien, author of THE SCIENTIFIC SHER- LOCK HOLMES: CRACKING THE CASE WITH SCIENCE & FORENSICS (2013); the title of his talk was "Reassessing Holmes the Scientist", and you will be able to read his paper in the next issue of The Baker Street Journal. The William Gillette Luncheon at Moran's was well attended, as always, and the Friends of Bogie's at Baker Street (Paul Singleton, Sarah Montague, and Andrew Joffe) entertained their audience with a tribute to an aged Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. The luncheon also was the occasion for Al Gregory's presentation of the annual Jan Whimsey Award (named in memory of his wife Jan Stauber) honoring the most whimsical piece in The Serpentine Muse last year; the winners (Susan Rice and Mickey Fromkin) received certificates and shared a check for the Canonical sum of $221.17. And Otto Penzler's tradi- tional open house at the Mysterious Bookshop provided the usual opportuni- ties to browse and buy. The Irregulars and their guests gathered for the BSI annual dinner at the Yale Club, where John Linsenmeyer proposed the preprandial first toast to Marilyn Nathan as The Woman.

  • Benedict Cumberbatch
Notable Mayflower Descendants: Benedict Cumberbatch Richard Hall z Benedict Cumberbatch is an award-winning British actor probably best known as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC and PBS television series Sherlock. Memorable film roles include Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013), The Imitation Game (2014), and Doctor Strange (2016). In recent years, various surprising familial connections have been reported regarding Benedict Cumberbatch. These include a distant kinship to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of the Sherlock Holmes character,1 and Alan Turing, the computer scientist and mathematician Cumberbatch portrayed in The Imitation Game.2 Not long ago, while tracing Benedict Cumberbatch’s ancestry, I made my own surprising discovery. In early 2017, I discovered an application for membership to the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution for Robert Cecil Cumberbatch,3 brother of Henry Carlton Cumberbatch (Benedict’s grandfather). The two brothers were great-grandsons of John Langdon of Boston, a “Cornhill” bookseller and patriot in the American Revolution.4 After the war, Langdon was appointed by Washington to a position in the Boston Custom House.5 Even more surprising than American ancestry for Cumberbatch, was the discovery that Langdon’s wife, Mary Walley, was a descendant of Mayflower passenger John Alden, thus giving the British actor a genealogical connection to Plymouth and the Pilgrims. The Alden descent of Benedict Cumberbatch is documented below. 1 “The Surprising Link Between Benedict Cumberbatch and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle,” article online at Ancestry.com, http://blogs.ancestry.com/cm/surprising-link-benedict- cumberbatch-sir-arthur-conan-doyle, accessed 16 September 2017. 2 “Decoding History: Ancestry of Benedict Cumberbatch Revealed,” article online at Ancestry.com, http://blogs.ancestry.com/cm/decoding-history-ancestry-of-benedict-cumberbatch- revealed, accessed 16 September 2017.

  • Masterpiece Mystery!
biographical notes MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! Kenneth Branagh Kurt Wallander in Wallander II Renowned for his interpretation of another melancholy Scandinavian—Prince Hamlet—Kenneth Branagh brings the existential Nordic outlook up to date as the gritty Swedish sleuth, Kurt Wallander, based on the bestselling thrillers by Henning Mankell. The first season of Wallander earned Branagh widespread critical acclaim and Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor, and series II won him a coveted BAFTA Award for Best Actor. An avid consumer of Wallander novels during his peripatetic life, Branagh is an acting, directing, producing, and screenwriting legend. After making his name in British theater, his first venture into film met instant success: his 1989 production of Shakespeare’s Henry V, which won a score of international awards including Academy Award nominations for Best Actor and Best Director; it was also later broadcast on MASTERPIECE (on which Branagh first appeared in Fortunes of War). Four other critically acclaimed film adaptations of Shakespeare followed, including his 1996 full-length version ofHamlet , which received four Academy Award nominations. In an astonishingly wide-ranging career, Branagh has directed Robert DeNiro and John Gielgud, acted under Robert Altman and Woody Allen, and played everyone from Victor Frankenstein in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, which he also directed, to polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton in Shackleton, to anti-Hitler conspirator Major General Henning von Tresckow in the 2008 feature film Valkyrie. Not to mention he recently adapted and directed Mozart’s whimsical The Magic Flute for film. He steps into another realm of whimsy with the movie version of the Marvel Comics classic Thor, which he is directing, due for release in 2011.
