Finding Films RADAR MEN FROM THE MOON Part 22, by Noel Cronin Although we license a lot of films from major LIMITED EDITION T-SHIRT! studios, we also contact private film collectors to see what treasures they hold. Over the years I have EXCLUSIVE! built relationships with many private collectors and HANDMADE this month I’d like to introduce you to Phil Sheard. For Phil, the fascination with film started in 1962, BY US! when he was 11 years old and like many young lads, he was very interested in train spotting and monsters! On Saturdays, he scoured the stalls of Sheffield’s Tower Market for magazines such asFamous Monsters and Monster World. The back pages featured adverts for 8mm cine films, clips from horror films and science fiction, inspiring Phil to look for such films in the UK. He found companies selling little reels of film, running just 4 minutes, for less than £1! By 1970 Phil had discovered sound projectors, multi-reel features and the joys of cinema classics available on 8mm and 16mm cine film for home entertainment. In the days before videos and DVDs, cine film lit up the front rooms of many homes and could be hired or purchased from dozens of companies both in the UK and all over the world. Phil began with small reels of Donald Duck and Fireball XL5, later collecting complete cartoons, newsreels, trailers and even full length feature films. During the 1970s and 80s, availability grew with digests of top feature films being made by Fox, Columbia, MGM and other studios. Like many film collectors, he converted a room in his home into a mini cinema, fitting it with ex-cinema tip-up seats. Posters were displayed on the walls, old projectors stood GREAT GIFT on the shelves and later, on the internet, he found plaster castings and ornate lights to decorate his ‘pleasure palace’. He showed films most weekends, on a FOR FATHER’S large cinemascope screen with electric curtains and tabs, DAY! featuring shorts, like Tom and Jerry, comedies such as Laurel and Hardy, news reels and ads from the appropriate period plus a full length feature presentation, usually split into two EACH WITH FREE halves with a pleasant chat and a tea break. This full £15 programme is unique to film collecting even today. UK POSTAGE After 30 years of collecting films and film memorabilia, These exclusive bespoke t-shirts are hand made by us. They look great Phil started his own company and now buys and sells cine and help to support Talking Pictures TV! For a comfortable fit films all over the world. Films, posters, soundtracks and we recommend choosing one size up from your normal size.
