For most students of drama, this is the moment you have been waiting for. You probably share the dream of every actor to create a role so convincing that the audience totally accepts your character as real, for- getting that you are only an actor playing a part. You must work hard to be an effective actor, but acting should never be so real that the audience loses the theatrical illu- sion of reality. Theater is not life, and acting is not life. Both are illusions that are larger than life.

  • Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press 2014
Jan 14 #1 Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press Sherlockians (and Holmesians) gathered in New York to celebrate the Great Detective's 160th birthday during the long weekend from Jan. 15 to Jan. 19. The festivities began with the traditional ASH Wednesday dinner sponsored by The Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes at O'Casey's and continued with the Christopher Morley Walk led by Jim Cox and Dore Nash on Thursday morning, followed by the usual lunch at McSorley's. The Baker Street Irregulars' Distinguished Speaker at the Midtown Executive Club on Thursday evening was James O'Brien, author of THE SCIENTIFIC SHER- LOCK HOLMES: CRACKING THE CASE WITH SCIENCE & FORENSICS (2013); the title of his talk was "Reassessing Holmes the Scientist", and you will be able to read his paper in the next issue of The Baker Street Journal. The William Gillette Luncheon at Moran's was well attended, as always, and the Friends of Bogie's at Baker Street (Paul Singleton, Sarah Montague, and Andrew Joffe) entertained their audience with a tribute to an aged Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. The luncheon also was the occasion for Al Gregory's presentation of the annual Jan Whimsey Award (named in memory of his wife Jan Stauber) honoring the most whimsical piece in The Serpentine Muse last year; the winners (Susan Rice and Mickey Fromkin) received certificates and shared a check for the Canonical sum of $221.17. And Otto Penzler's tradi- tional open house at the Mysterious Bookshop provided the usual opportuni- ties to browse and buy. The Irregulars and their guests gathered for the BSI annual dinner at the Yale Club, where John Linsenmeyer proposed the preprandial first toast to Marilyn Nathan as The Woman.

  • The Hothouse and Dynamic Equilibrium in the Works of Harold Pinter
Ben Ferber The Hothouse and Dynamic Equilibrium in the Works of Harold Pinter I have no doubt that history will recognize Harold Pinter as one of the most influential dramatists of all time, a perennial inspiration for the way we look at modern theater. If other playwrights use characters and plots to put life under a microscope for audiences, Pinter hands them a kaleidoscope and says, “Have at it.” He crafts multifaceted plays that speak to the depth of his reality and teases and threatens his audience with dangerous truths. In No Man’s Land, Pinter has Hirst attack Spooner, who may or may not be his old friend: “This is outrageous! Who are you? What are you doing in my house?”1 Hirst then launches into a monologue beginning: “I might even show you my photograph album. You might even see a face in it which might remind you of your own, of what you once were.”2 Pinter never fully resolves Spooner’s identity, but the mens’ actions towards each other are perfectly clear: with exacting language and wit, Pinter has constructed a magnificent struggle between the two for power and identity. In 1958, early in his career, Pinter wrote The Hothouse, an incredibly funny play based on a traumatic personal experience as a lab rat at London’s Maudsley Hospital, proudly founded as a modern psychiatric institution, rather than an asylum. The story of The Hothouse, set in a mental hospital of some sort, is centered around the death of one patient, “6457,” and the unexplained pregnancy of another, “6459.” Details around both incidents are very murky, but varying amounts of culpability for both seem to fall on the institution’s leader, Roote, and his second-in- command, Gibbs.

  • Benedict Cumberbatch
Notable Mayflower Descendants: Benedict Cumberbatch Richard Hall z Benedict Cumberbatch is an award-winning British actor probably best known as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC and PBS television series Sherlock. Memorable film roles include Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013), The Imitation Game (2014), and Doctor Strange (2016). In recent years, various surprising familial connections have been reported regarding Benedict Cumberbatch. These include a distant kinship to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of the Sherlock Holmes character,1 and Alan Turing, the computer scientist and mathematician Cumberbatch portrayed in The Imitation Game.2 Not long ago, while tracing Benedict Cumberbatch’s ancestry, I made my own surprising discovery. In early 2017, I discovered an application for membership to the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution for Robert Cecil Cumberbatch,3 brother of Henry Carlton Cumberbatch (Benedict’s grandfather). The two brothers were great-grandsons of John Langdon of Boston, a “Cornhill” bookseller and patriot in the American Revolution.4 After the war, Langdon was appointed by Washington to a position in the Boston Custom House.5 Even more surprising than American ancestry for Cumberbatch, was the discovery that Langdon’s wife, Mary Walley, was a descendant of Mayflower passenger John Alden, thus giving the British actor a genealogical connection to Plymouth and the Pilgrims. The Alden descent of Benedict Cumberbatch is documented below. 1 “The Surprising Link Between Benedict Cumberbatch and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle,” article online at Ancestry.com, http://blogs.ancestry.com/cm/surprising-link-benedict- cumberbatch-sir-arthur-conan-doyle, accessed 16 September 2017. 2 “Decoding History: Ancestry of Benedict Cumberbatch Revealed,” article online at Ancestry.com, http://blogs.ancestry.com/cm/decoding-history-ancestry-of-benedict-cumberbatch- revealed, accessed 16 September 2017.
