    2003–2004 ANNUAL REPORT SAM Students with Sanislo Feast SAM CONNECTS ART TO LIFE CONTEMPORARY CHINESE ARTIST LI JIN’S A FEAST made a permanent impression on the fourth- and fifth-grade students at Sanislo Elementary School. Inspired by the fifty-nine- foot-long painting depicting food from a traditional Chinese dinner on a background of recipes written in Chinese calligraphy, the students set out to re-create their own version. Art teachers Ruth Winter and Carolyn Autenrieth designed the project to celebrate the diversity of cultures at their school. Students painted their favorite ethnic foods, and staff helped transcribe the recipes into the students’ original languages. On display at the Seattle Asian Art Museum last spring, the students’ work, Sanislo Feast, a fifty-foot-long art scroll portraying food and languages from seventeen different nations and cultures, reflected the heritage of Sanislo students and staff. Our museum is thus still a relative newcomer on the international scene. Nonetheless, in this fairly short period, the Van Gogh Museum has established itself as one of the liveliest institutions of its kind, with a growing reputation for its collections, exhibitions and research programmes. The past year has been marked by particular success: the Van Gogh and Gauguin exhibition attracted record numbers of visitors to its Amsterdam venue. And in this Journal we publish our latest acquisitions, including Manet's The jetty at Boulogne-sur-mer, the first important work by this artist to enter any Dutch public collection. By a happy coincidence, our 30th anniversary coincides with the 150th of the birth of Vincent van Gogh. As we approach this milestone it seemed to us a good moment to reflect on the current state of Van Gogh studies. For this issue of the Journal we asked a number of experts to look back on the most significant developments in Van Gogh research since the last major anniversary in 1990, the centenary of the artist's death. Our authors were asked to filter a mass of published material in differing areas, from exhibition publications to writings about fakes and forgeries. To complement this, we also invited a number of specialists to write a short piece on one picture from our collection, an exercise that is intended to evoke the variety and resourcefulness of current writing on Van Gogh.

By permission of Ministero per I Beni e delle Attività Culturali. In the summer of 1879, Vincent van Gogh was living in the Borinage, a poor coal mining region of Belgium, working as a priest. He sat down to write a letter of gratitude to his brother, Theo, who had recently come for a visit. “Like everyone else,” he wrote. “I have need of relationships of friendship or affection or trusting companionship, and am not like a street pump or lamp-post, whether of stone or iron, so that I can’t do without them without perceiving an emptiness and feeling their lack, like any other generally civilized and highly respectable man.” Through such feelings of connection to others, van Gogh wrote, “one is aware that one has a reason for being, that one might not be entirely worthless and superfluous but perhaps good for one thing or another.” Helewise Berger, curator of the exhibition “Van Gogh’s Inner Circle: Friends, Family, Models” at the Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch, which opens tomorrow and runs until January 12, 2020, said that it was time for a museum to “do justice to the broad group of people around van Gogh.” The show sets out to explore how his network of family and friends supported him—emotionally, fiscally, and socially.

    INTRODUCING THE LIBERAL ARTS THROUGH INTERDISCIPLINARY INQUIRY: PROPOSAL FOR AN INTEGRATIVE GENERAL EDUCATION EXPERIENCE Mark E. Blum University of Louisville We can deliberate about things that are in our power and can be done. Aristotle, Nichomachean Ethics The beginning of the contemporary undergraduate's study should involve him in the inquiry experience, encompassing library and field research, for several reasons which include both cultural and psychological evidence that a student is more successful in integrating the purpose and abilities of a Liberal Arts education when he is an agent in the direction of his own studies. The inquiry should be interdisciplinary, for the student has not yet reached a maturity of disciplinary knowledge that will allow specialization in a depth that permits self-direction. This imperative will appear strange to many who are proficient in higher interdisciplinary research, that is, the inquirers who have mastered several disciplines and employ them in their thought, for to be interdisciplinary normally connotes a complex integration of methodologies. As Jonathan Broido expresses it, an interdiscipli- narian must be able to describe the explanatory utility, predictive power, and information-theoretic measures of the fields that he employs.¹ Those academics who are suspicious of interdisciplinary thought and inquiry, accusing it of conceptual confusion, lack of intellectual rigor, and in its undergraduate pedagogy, an impediment to the development of disciplinary competence, will be equally puzzled by a claim that freshmen should begin their orientation to the Liberal Arts through interdisciplinary inquiry.² My presentation of a freshman program in interdisciplinary inquiry is based on an understanding of the concepts of questioning and methods of library and field research "generic" to the social sciences and the humanities,³ yet 57 at a level of simplicity prior to the higher level of disciplinary organization that is accomplished gradually in the upper levels of undergraduate study, and polished in graduate work.

ABSTRACT Syed Abdul Malik (1919-2000) started his literary career in the early forties, his oeuvre of unforgettable short stories, novels and poetry spanned over five decades. Some of his notable novels include Chabi Ghar (1958), Surujmukhir Sapna (1960), Adharsila (1960), Anya Akash Anya Tara (1962), Aghari Atmar Kahini (1969), Agnigarbha (1971), and others. He enriched the Assamese biographical novel with his two fictional biographies Rup Tirthar Jatri (1963-65) based on the lives of Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla, the architect of modern Assamese culture, and Dhanya Nara Tanu Bhal (1987), based on the life of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva, the great sixteenth century Vaishnavite saint. His novel Aghari Atmar Kahini won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi award in 1972.The paper seeks to examine the novel Rup Tirthar Jatri in the genre of the fictional biography and show how far it is faithful to the life reflected.
