Available at: http://scholarship.claremont.edu/lux/vol2/iss1/29 Stover: Damsels and Heroines: The Conundrum of the Post-Feminist Disney Princess Stover 1 Damsels and Heroines: The Conundrum of the Post-Feminist Disney Princess Cassandra Stover University of Southern California Abstract This research explores cultural shifts in the popularity of the Disney princess in American culture, especially its postmodern resurgence, as well as the complex relationship between Disney’s recent representations of women in the 1990’s and post-feminist ideology. My project begins by analyzing the historic appearance of the Disney female in relation to the women’s movements. I also examine lingering anti-feminist backlash in representations of what I call “New Wave” Disney heroines. Finally, I examine the implications of post-feminist discourse and advertising for young female viewers. When asked about Disney movies, many parents groan and launch into a familiar diatribe about the studio that transformed their daughters into princesses. -

He went on to become the founding dean at Harcourt Higher Education, in Boston, the first online college in New England, and subsequently served as academic vice president at the wholly online Ellis College, in Illinois. During his years at Cal State, Fay developed, researched, and edited seven editions of the California Almanac. International Journal on Studies in English Language and Literature (IJSELL) Volume 2, Issue 7, July 2014, PP 84-99 ISSN 2347-3126 (Print) & ISSN 2347-3134 (Online) www.arcjournals.org ‘Kill Her, and Bring Me Back Her Heart as A Token!’ Identity, Power and Violence in the Grimms’ Fairy Tales Collection Dr. María Alcantud Díaz University of Valencia (Spain) [email protected] Abstract: We obtain some of our first organized accounts of human action through folk and fairy tales, through their participants. It is by means of these stories that we make ourselves acquainted with the social world that surround us. This paper analyses the role of the main participants and the processes they carry out ina selected corpus of 22 tales of the Grimm’s tales collection. The intention is twofold: firstly, to show how violent actions, power and social status are intrinsically related in them and that this narrative might be embedded within a visible social construction of the self. In addition, I intend to prove that the degree of violence in the tales does not suit publishers’ readings criteria in terms of age which are being applied nowadays to readers for childrenThe analytical framework used for the analysis draws on the principles of CDA, CL, SFL and the social identity theory. The results confirm that the verbal processes performed by some of the characters who use the power that their status provides them could influence the potential receptors of these narratives: children. Where did this story take place? 2. Which characters did you like best and why? 3. Which characters did you dislike and why? 4. Why do you think Fritz’s brothers were so mean to him? 5. Who do you think the old man was? 6. How does this story teach you about kindness? 7. Why were the sisters wrong to try to steal a feather? 8. What do you think they would do with a golden feather? 9. Was it fair that the other people became attached to the sisters? 10. Why do you think that happened? Before discussing the characters, you could use our Good and Bad Sheet to sort the characters into good, bad or in between. What lesson do you think this story teaches us? Perhaps there is more than one lesson. Fritz’s brothers and the three sisters learn a lesson about greed. You could say that the people who get stuck to the three sisters learn a lesson about interfering in other people’s business OR acting without thinking. Abstract Children today are expected to work seamlessly in a group dynamic in efforts toward a common goal. Children's literature in the 21st century may not reflect this characteristic, especially in regards to equality of gendered characters. This research examined the presence of equity among characters in the 21st century children's fairy tales, exhibited by collaboration in both mixed and same-gendered relationships.
