Digging in Kitsch Depths Uncovering Urban Development Projects Skopje 2014 - Inverdan Iris Verschuren Erasmus Mundus Master Course in Urban Studies 4 Cities Academic Year of Defence: 2017-2018 Date of Submission: September 1, 2017 Supervisors Martin Zerlang, Henrik Reeh Second Reader Bas van Heur Abstract This research concerns itself with forms of kitsch in two urban development projects. These projects in Skopje, Macedonia and Zaandam, The Netherlands, are discussed in their specific contexts and then analysed along a framework based on themes and topics related to the cultural category of kitsch. This category deals with both stylistic and aesthetic characteristics, but also focuses on processes outside of the object. Thus it enables to think of kitsch as a label that can just as well be applied to politics, policies or therefore urban development projects apart from just cultural objects. Furthermore linking kitsch with the ideologies and narratives of the UDPs shows how these are expressed in the actual physical form. In the end it is about the question what labeling these projects kitsch means, but also in what ways the label is used or applied and what kind of responses this evokes thus answering ‘in what ways can kitsch be related to the contemporary urban development projects Skopje 2014 and Inverdan?’ Although the cities and projects are incredibly different in context and the resulting style, there are still similarities in the way that kitsch is used and how this relates to a continuing global pressure to compete in neoliberal

ALBANIAN LITERATURE Robert Elsie (1993) 1. The historical background - II. Attributes of modern Albanian literature - III. Literature of the post-war period - IV. Literature of the sixties, seventies and eighties - V. Albanian literature in Kosovo - VI. Perspectives for the future - VII. Chronology of modern Albanian literature 1. The historical background Being at the crossroads between various spheres of culture has never been a gain to the Albanians as one might have expected. An Albanian national culture and literature1 was late to develop and had enormous difficulty asserting itself between the Catholic Latin civilization of the Adriatic coast, the venerable Orthodox traditions of the Greeks, Serbs and Bulgarians and the sophisticated Islamic culture of the Ottoman Empire. First non-literary traces of written Albanian are known from the 15th century, e. g. Bishop Paulus ’ baptismal formula of November 8, 1462. Beginning with the Missal (Meshari) of Gjon Buzuku2 in 1555, the early Albanian literature of the 16th and 17th century with its primarily religious focus might have provided a foundation for literary creativity in the age of the Counter- Reformation under the somewhat ambiguous patronage of the Catholic Church, had not the banners of Islam soon been unfurled on the eastern horizons. The Ottoman colonization of Albania, which had begun as early as 1385, was to split the Albanians definitively into three spheres of culture, all virtually independent of one another: 1) the cosmopolitan traditions of the Islamic Orient using initially

  • The Macedonian Question and the Macedonians
The Macedonian Question and the Macedonians This book is a comprehensive and dispassionate analysis of the intriguing Macedonian Question from 1878 until 1949 and of the Macedonians (and of their neighbours) from the 1870s until today, with the two themes intertwining. The Macedonian Question was an offshoot of the wider Eastern Question – i.e. the fate of the European remnants of the Ottoman Empire once it dissolved. The initial protagonists of the Macedonian Question were Greece, Bulgaria and Serbia, and a Slav-speaking population inhabiting geographical Macedonia in search of its destiny, the largest segment of which ended up creating a new nation, comprising the Macedonians, something unacceptable to its three neighbours. Alexis Heraclides analyses the shifting sands of the Macedonian Question and of the gradual rise of Macedonian nationhood, with special emphasis on the Greek, Bulgarian and Serbian claims to Macedonia (1870s–1919); the birth and vicissitudes of the most famous Macedonian revolutionary organization, the VM(O)RO, and other organizations (1893–1940); the appearance and gradual establishment of the Macedonian nation from the 1890s until 1945; Titos’s crucial role in Macedonian nationhood-cum-federal status; the Greek-Macedonian naming dispute (1991–2018), including the ‘skeletons in the cupboard’– the deep-seated reasons rendering the clash intractable for decades; the final Greek-Macedonian settlement (the 2018 Prespa Agreement); the Bulgarian-Macedonian dispute (1950–today) and its ephemeral settlement in 2017; the issue of the Macedonian language; and the Macedonian national historical narrative. The author also addresses questions around who the ancient Macedonians were and the international fascination with Alexander the Great.
