Graeme Gillespie 23 February 2010 Qualifications and Experience Please see my curriculum vitae (Appendix I) for my general qualifications and experience. My Ph.D. in zoology focussed specifically on the conservation biology and ecology of frog species in south-eastern Australia. I have 23 years of field and scientific experience studying amphibians and their conservation and management in south- eastern Australia. I have published 24 refereed scientific papers and 38 technical reports on amphibian ecology, conservation and management. I am recognised throughout Australia as an authority on the frog fauna of Victoria, specifically with respect to conservation issues, and I am regularly asked to provide advice on such matters to individuals, government conservation and land management agencies, and non-government organisations. With regard to the Giant Burrowing Frog, I encountered this species on several occasions between 1986 and 1992 while undertaking and supervising pre-logging biodiversity surveys in East Gippsland, Victoria. These records are documented in the Victorian Wildlife Atlas. During this period, I gained knowledge of the species’ habitat associations, breeding biology, some aspects of its behaviour and an appreciation of its conservation status in Victoria (see Opie et al. 1990; Westaway et al.1990; Lobert et al. 1991). Because of my research into amphibian conservation and management, I am highly familiar with the existing literature on the impact of various forest management activities on amphibians and the implications of these activities for amphibian conservation. -

Introduction Road kill monitoring is a requirement of the approved Warrell Creek to Nambucca Heads Koala, Spotted- tailed Quoll and Grey-headed Flying-fox management plans and the Ecological Monitoring Program. The aim of the monitoring program is to; • report on any animal road kill on the project following the opening to traffic; and • assess the effectiveness of the presence of fauna fencing to prevent fauna being killed by vehicles while attempting to cross the WC2NH Upgrade. -

February 2007 1 1. Background Amphibian species across the world have declined at an alarming rate in recent decades. According to the IUCN at least 122 species have gone extinct since 1980 and nearly one third of the world’s near 6,000 amphibian species are classified as threatened with extinction, placing the entire class at the core of the current biodiversity crisis (IUCN, 2006). Australasia too has experienced significant declines; several Australian species are considered extinct and nearly 25% of the remainder are threatened with extinction, while all four species native to New Zealand are threatened. Conventional causes of biodiversity loss, habitat destruction and invasive species, are playing a major role in these declines. However, emergent disease and climate change are strongly implicated in many declines and extinctions. These factors are now acting globally, rapidly and, most disturbingly, in protected and near pristine areas. Whilst habitat conservation and mitigation of threats in situ are essential, for many taxa the requirement for some sort of ex situ intervention is mounting. In response to this crisis there have been a series of meetings organised by the IUCN (World Conservation Union), WAZA (World Association of Zoos & Aquariums) and CBSG (Conservation Breeding Specialist Group, of the IUCN Species Survival Commission) around the world to discuss how the zoo community can and should respond. -

1 CATALOGUE OF PROTOZOAN PARASITES RECORDED IN AUSTRALIA PETER J. O’DONOGHUE & ROBERT D. ADLARD O’Donoghue, P.J. & Adlard, R.D. 2000 02 29: Catalogue of protozoan parasites recorded in Australia. Memoirs of the Queensland Museum 45(1):1-164. Brisbane. ISSN 0079-8835. Published reports of protozoan species from Australian animals have been compiled into a host- parasite checklist, a parasite-host checklist and a cross-referenced bibliography. Protozoa listed include parasites, commensals and symbionts but free-living species have been excluded. Over 590 protozoan species are listed including amoebae, flagellates, ciliates and ‘sporozoa’ (the latter comprising apicomplexans, microsporans, myxozoans, haplosporidians and paramyxeans). Organisms are recorded in association with some 520 hosts including mammals, marsupials, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates. Information has been abstracted from over 1,270 scientific publications predating 1999 and all records include taxonomic authorities, synonyms, common names, sites of infection within hosts and geographic locations. Context statement for the Gloucester subregion Product 1.1 from the Northern Sydney Basin Bioregional Assessment 28 May 2014 A scientific collaboration between the Department of the Environment, Bureau of Meteorology, CSIRO and Geoscience Australia The Bioregional Assessment Programme The Bioregional Assessment Programme is a transparent and accessible programme of baseline assessments that increase the available science for decision making associated with coal seam gas and large coal mines. A bioregional assessment is a scientific analysis of the ecology, hydrology, geology and hydrogeology of a bioregion with explicit assessment of the potential direct, indirect and cumulative impacts of coal seam gas and large coal mining development on water resources. This Programme draws on the best available scientific information and knowledge from many sources, including government, industry and regional communities, to produce bioregional assessments that are independent, scientifically robust, and relevant and meaningful at a regional scale. The Programme is funded by the Australian Government Department of the Environment. The Department of the Environment, Bureau of Meteorology, CSIRO and Geoscience Australia are collaborating to undertake bioregional assessments. November 2008. xx+84p. iii Executive Summary Queensland Water Infrastructure (QWI) proposes to construct Traveston Crossing Dam on the Mary River as part of a strategy to meet anticipated water demands in south‐ eastern Queensland. This is the last high‐yield dam site available in the region, according to QWI, but it is also an extremely sensitive site in terms of significance for conservation. An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) has been released for public comment, and a Supplement containing responses to submissions has also been issued. This review is concerned with the implications for a number of species listed under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Act 1999 (EPBC Act), including three ‘iconic’ species, the Australian lungfish, Mary River cod and Mary River turtle. Context Ecologically Sustainable Development In many cases, the EIS makes assumptions on the basis of scant evidence and draws conclusions about impacts with little or no justification. -

The causes of, and factors contributing to, the frequency, intensity, timing and location of, bushfires in NSW in the 2019- 20 bushfire season, including consideration of any role of weather, drought, climate change, fuel loads and human activity. 6. [to make recommendations on] hazard reduction, zoning, and any appropriate use of indigenous practices. 2019 was Australia’s hottest, driest year on record and 2018-2019 was southeast Australia's driest two-year period on record. It is apparent the principle exasperating factors affecting the severity and extent of the 2019-20 bushfires in north-east NSW were the record drought and temperatures in the preceding months. There can be no doubt the extent and severity of the fires were due to climate heating. Though there are numerous underlying factors contributing to the dryness, structure, and composition of the vegetation, and thus the nature and extent of the fires. Fire initiated by lightning has been a factor driving evolution and adaptation of Australian biota for millions of years, long before people arrived. There can be no doubt that people, and their use of fire for a variety of purposes, changed the extent and frequency of fire in parts of the landscape, and thus contributed to subsequent environmental changes. -

THREATENED SPECIES SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 The Minister’s delegate approved this Conservation Advice on 13/07/2017 . Conservation Advice Mixophyes iteratus giant barred frog Conservation Status Mixophyes iteratus (giant barred frog) is listed as Endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwlth) (EPBC Act) effective from the 16 July 2000.The species is eligible for listing under the EPBC Act as on 16 July 2000 it was listed as Endangered under Schedule 1 of the preceding Act, the Endangered Species Protection Act 1992 (Cwlth). Species can also be listed as threatened under state and territory legislation. For information on the current listing status of this species under relevant state or territory legislation, see http://www.environment.gov.au/cgi-bin/sprat/public/sprat.pl. The main factor that is the cause of the species being eligible for listing in the Endangered category is a substantial decline in numbers and distribution partly attributed to chytridiomycosis. This species’ status under the EBPC Act is currently being reviewed as part of a species expert assessment plan for frogs. Description A very large frog (snout-to-vent length up to 115 mm) with a pointed snout and well developed hind legs. The dorsal surface is dark brown to olive, with darker blotches and an irregular dark vertebral band commencing between the eyes and continuing posteriorly. A dark stripe runs from the snout, through the eye and above the tympanum, terminating at a point above the forelimb. There are irregular dark spots or mottling on the flanks. -
