Among the thousands of events commemoratingthe occa- sion was aconference that took place in Jerusalem, dedicated to 500 years of in- teractions between Protestants and Jews. The conference was organized by the Leo Baeck Institute Jerusalem, together with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Martin Buber Chair in Jewish Thought and Philosophyatthe Goethe Univer- sity in Frankfurt as well as the Frankfurt research hub “Religious Positioning: Modalities and Constellations in Jewish, Christian and Islamic Contexts,” the Evangelical Church in Germany, the Center for the StudyofChristianity at the He- brew University, the Institute for the History of the German Jews in Hamburg, the Stephen Roth Institute for the StudyofContemporary Antisemitism and Racism, TelAvivUniversity, and the Minerva Institute for German History,Tel Aviv Uni- versity. Some of the papers thatwerefirst presented at the conference comprise the coreofthis volume. Since 1996,discussions of Protestant-Jewish relations, the impact of the Reforma- tion on the history of Germany, Jews, and German-Jews, and, in fact,European history tout court, havebeen shaped by Daniel Jonah Goldhagen’sbest-selling and controversial Hitler’sWilling Executioners:OrdinaryGermansand the Holo- caust.¹ While many, ifnot most, historians reject the book’smain thesis, that, in its own way, revivedthe Sonderweg explanation of German history, inpublic opinion and the media Goldhagen’sbook reaffirmed the alleged persistence, in German history, ofaneliminationist Germantype of antisemitism. Martin Luther stands at the beginning of this uniquelyGerman and German-Protestant trajec- tory, astraight historical path that led from Luther’scall to destroy the material presenceofJews in the HolyRoman Empire to Hitler’sactual destruction of the Jews in modern Germany.Intracking the spread of modern antisemitism in nine- teenth- and twentieth-centuryGermany, Goldhagen reminds his readers of the re- luctanceofsome segments of the Catholic Church under Nazism to adopt racist theories while positioning Protestant churches, the Protestant media, and espe- Daniel Jonah Goldhagen, Hitler’sWillingExecutioners: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust (New York: Random House, 1996). https://doi.org/10.1515/9783110664713-002 2 Moshe Sluhovsky and Aya Elyada ciallythe Protestant Sonntagsblätter, the weeklySundaynewspapers, asactive agents in shaping antisemitic public opinion.² There is no denying Luther’sown antisemitism, nor the immense influence of his antisemitic writingsonProtestant theologyand theologians in laterperi- ods. Lutheran theologyconcerning Jews and Judaism was, in its turn, molded by the Pauline theologyofsupersession, and by Luther’sown trajectory from hop- ing to bring about amass conversion of the Jews following his purported purifi- cation of Christianity of foreign pagan elements, to the vicious and even extermi- natory theologyofhis later years. It is equallyself-evident that Luther’spersonal struggle with the Jewish refusal to accept his purified theologyhad an inestim- able impact on latergenerations of Lutherantheologians. This was true through- out the past half amillennium and even more so since 1945. In fact,asThomas Kaufmann rightlyobserves, “[Luther’s] attitude to the Jews has become asortof pivotal issue in understanding his character and theology.”³ Just as Luther’sown virulent antisemitismshould not be whitewashed, one ought never to dismiss or forgive the brutal, racist, and in manycases elimina- tionist antisemitism of large segments of the Protestant hierarchyinthe modern period. Nonetheless, the articles in this volume positthat there was no direct line leading from Luther to Hitler. And while some papers in the collection address Luther’santisemitism as well as the Glaubensbewegung Deutsche Christen,we have sought to broaden the scope of the investigation. Protestant-Jewish theolog- ical encounters shaped not onlyantisemitism but also the JewishReform move- ment and Protestant philosemitic post-Holocaust theology; interactions between Jews and Protestants took place not onlyinthe German-speaking sphere but also in the wider Protestant universe – in Poland,Bohemia, the Low Countries, Eng- land, and the United States;theologywas crucial for the articulation of attitudes towardJews, but music and philosophywereadditional spheres of creativity that enabled the process of thinkingthrough the relations between Judaism and Prot- estantism. Generallyspeaking,Luther and Lutheranism spelled trouble for the Jews, but there weretimes that they constituted an attractive model of ‘purified’ Christianitythat could potentiallylead to arapprochement between the faith communities. For afew generations of secularized Jews in Germany, conversion to Protestantism was ameans of acculturation into Deutschtum,Protestantism’s essence as abelief system brushed aside. Rosa Katz: Oral History Transcript www.wisconsinhistory.org/HolocaustSurvivors/Katz. asp Name: Rachel (Rosa) Goldberg Katz (1924–2012) Birth Place: Lodz, Poland Arrived in Wisconsin: 1953, Oshkosh Project Name: Oral Histories: Wisconsin Survivors Rosa Katz of the Holocaust Biography: Rachel (Rosa) Goldberg Katz was born in Lodz, Poland, on May 6, 1924, to a well-to-do family with liberal Jewish beliefs. In 1935, her sister and brother-in-law immigrated to Palestine while the rest of the family remained in Poland. When the Germans occupied Lodz in 1939, 15-year-old Rosa was among the thousands of Jews crowded into the city's ghetto. Three years later, in July 1942, her mother was deported from the ghetto and never heard from again. In August 1944, the Lodz Ghetto was liquidated. Its starving residents, including Rosa, her father, brother, and sister-in-law, Hela, were all shipped to Auschwitz. There she was separated from her father and brother. She never saw them again. German officials mistakenly sent Rosa and hundreds of other Jewish women (instead of French prisoners) to work at the Krupp munitions factory in Berlin. For eight months, Rosa assembled delicate timepieces for German bombs. In March 1945, she was transferred to the death camp in Ravensbruck, Germany. The Swedish Red Cross liberated the camp within a month of her arrival. Its inhabitants were transported to Sweden where Rosa recuperated for several years. She married Bernard Katz there (also a survivor). In April 1948, they came to the U.S. Initially settling in North Carolina, the Katz family moved to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in 1953.

LUTHER’S BIBLE & THE EHV O N T H E 500TH ANNIVERSARY O F T H E LUTHERAN REFORMATION Alle Schrift von Gott eingegeben October 31, 2017 Introductory Thoughts on the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation We are celebrating 500 years of the Lutheran Reformation, and there is much to celebrate. We praise God that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Jesus Christ alone. We learn this from Scripture alone. To God alone be all the glory and praise! Most say that the Reformation started on October 31, 1517. On that day, Dr. Martin Luther sent a letter to the Archbishop of Mainz about indulgences. Here are a few excerpts from that letter: Under your most distinguished name, papal indulgences are offered all across the land for the construction of St. Peter’s…. I bewail the gross misunderstanding…. Evidently the poor souls believe that when they have bought indulgence letters they are then assured of their salvation. After all, the indulgences contribute absolutely nothing to the salvation and holiness of souls.1 After that, Luther also posted his Ninety-five Theses on the Castle Church door. These Latin statements were intended for public debate by university professors and theologians. Contrary to Luther’s expectations, his Ninety-five Theses were translated, published, and read by many people throughout Germany and in many other places. This was the spark that started the Reformation. Yet Luther was still learning from Scripture. In 1517, Luther still thought he was on the side of the Pope. By October of 1520, Luther had become clearer about many things.

Drobnicki This bibliography is a supplement to three earlier ones published in the March 1994, Decem- ber 1996, and September 1998 issues of the Bulletin of Bibliography. During the intervening time. Holocaust revisionism has continued to be discussed both in the scholarly literature and in the mainstream press, especially owing to the libel lawsuit filed by David Irving against Deb- orah Lipstadt and Penguin Books. The Holocaust deniers, who prefer to call themselves “revi- sionists” in an attempt to gain scholarly legitimacy, have refused to go away and remain as vocal as ever— Bradley R. Smith has continued to send revisionist advertisements to college newspapers (including free issues of his new publication. The Revisionist), generating public- ity for his cause. Holocaust-denial, which will be used interchangeably with Holocaust revisionism in this bib- liography, is a body of literature that seeks to “prove” that the Jewish Holocaust did not hap- pen. Although individual revisionists may have different motives and beliefs, they all share at least one point: that there was no systematic attempt by Nazi Germany to exterminate Euro- pean Jewry.

  • Publishing Literature for the Future of Jewish Evangelism
Publishing Literature for the Future of Jewish Evangelism Barry Rubin Messianic Jewish Communications Steve Cohen‟s paper on tract passing was persuasive. Broadsides have influenced many people. In fact, I myself received some broadsides in 1972, which got my attention enough that I ultimately came to believe that Yeshua was the Messiah. I also wrote a few broadsides in my days with Jews for Jesus and handed out what seems like millions of these tracts in six years with Jews for Jesus, while serving in several other capacities. There is a place for this method of evangelism. Yet, it took more than broadsides to convince me to believe, as is true with most Jewish people. Broadsides get attention, but more is needed, something more substantial. Before I trusted Yeshua in 1973, at The Lederer Foundation building in Baltimore, I was given some of the books published by this organization, many of which you have seen. I have no statistics, but I know many Jews were brought closer to Yeshua through these books. From 1980-1982, I served as director of a small Jewish mission in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and then joined what was then, the American Board of Missions to the Jews, now CPM, until 1988. Toward the end of my time with CPM, I met Einspruch, the widow of Dr. Henry Einspruch, director of The Lederer Foundation, at a Passover Seder. Marie asked me to consider taking over this ministry. In fact, she had previously talked to Steve Cohen, since Lederer had been a Lutheran ministry and her board thought a Lutheran should be the director.
