2008-2009 EDITION

Aboriginal Edmonton is a dynamic, vibrant, and an energetic community. It is young, entrepreneurial, educated, culturally active, artistic, and caring. It is the home of the second largest urban Aboriginal population in Canada. As well, Edmonton is the corporate and political headquarters of many Aboriginal organizations and government agencies.

The “Aboriginal community” is not one community, but “many communities”, and is, therefore, a reflection of the diverse and multifaceted Aboriginal population that makes Edmonton their home. The Aboriginal people in Edmonton have roots that are deeply sown and well-traveled through- out the whole of the City and extend from the past, through to the present, and will continue well into the future.

The City of Edmonton’s Edmonton Aboriginal Urban Affairs Committee (EAUAC), Aboriginal Edmonton Guide founder, in partnership with the Edmonton Aboriginal Relations Office have worked collaboratively to reproduce this guide with the intent to help you navigate the diverse and friendly Edmonton community. We hope you find it useful. Your feedback and suggestions are welcomed.

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE

We have categorized the contents by sectors followed by an alphabetical listing of all organizations and service providers.

PHONE: 780-429-3470 FAX: 780-424-2863 EMAIL: [email protected] WEBSITE: www.hopemission.com/men.htm

SERVICES: The Herb Jamieson Centre offers short term, and emergency room and board, to men with little or no resources. These men, normally between 18 and 60 years of age come here for a great variety of reasons. Some are transient, needing only a few days before they move on, while some are unemployed and just need some time here to get “back on their feet”. However, the majority of our residents are from the “street”. They are men who have found themselves destitute because of addictions, emotional trauma, mental health problems, or more likely because they face a combination of these and related problems. Essentially they are men who are simply unable to cope in normal social and communal life.
