Thursday, February 6 NO CLASSES Teachers’ Convention With “Random Acts of Kindness” week following closely behind, V.G. students will continue to “Cast their Nets” by Friday, February 7 NO CLASSES Teachers’ Convention participating in the Heart and Stroke fundraiser “Jump Rope for Friday, February 14 Heart”. For the next two weeks students will be practicing their th Valentine’s Day skipping skills, and on February 14 will be jumping to raise funds Wear red, pink, & white for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The Staff of VG challenge Jump Rope for Heart event all students and parents to perform one random act of kindness Monday, February 17 during this month, and to encourage others to pass it on! Vital Grandin had the privilege of welcoming Olympic athletes in our WELCOME school to talk about and teach adapted sports. Please join us in congratulating Mr. Carrie Anton (Gold Medalist from the Sydney Olympics) visited Vital Loiselle and his wife, Grandin in December to introduce the sport of Goalball to our 5’s and Anne, on the birth 6’s. On Wednesday, January 22, 2014 she returned to meet the grade of their son, André 1-3 classes with Viviane Forest, a Paralympian who has won Gold Eugene on Saturday, Medals in two Summer Paralympic Games (Athens 2004, Sydney 2000) January 11th. He is in the sport of Goalball. At the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in one lucky little boy Vancouver, Viviane also won a third Gold medal, three Silver and one to join such a loving Bronze in Alpine Skiing (25% of Canada's medals)! family. Students had fun learning a new sport in which they play Congratulations! without sight (with the help of blindfolds). They even got a chance to touch the gold medals, and receive autographed pictures! See our school website for more pics. JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAMS FOR GRADES 3, 5 and 6 We are pleased to announce our participation with the Junior Achievement Program, a national program that connects schools with community leaders to help develop tomorrow's leaders. For over 58 years, as the largest youth business education organization in Canada, Junior Achievement has been inspiring and preparing more than 4 million youth to succeed in an ever- changing global economy. The three pillars of the program are financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship. Please check the website at http://jacan.org/ Our grades 3, 5 and 6 grades will be offered sessions on Wednesday afternoons starting January, and continuing into March. Grade 3 - Students explore how their needs and wants are met through various jobs in the community. Grade 5 - Gives students the chance to look into what it takes to operate and manage a business through organization, production and marketing activities. Grade 6 - The entire class comes together to create a concept, organize themselves and run their own sales stand for a day. We are grateful to the community volunteers, and excited for these unique experiences. YEARBOOK Have you purchased your YEARBOOK yet? The design must be on an 8 X 11 piece of blank paper, and may only be black and white (use black felt, not pencil for the final copy). The yearbook committee will make the selection for the yearbook cover on Feb 14th. JUMP ROPE FOR HEART – A VALENTINE’S EVENT DID YOU KNOW? Our school-wide campaign to fundraise for the Canadian Heart St. Albert Parish now and Stroke Foundation kicks off on Jan. 31 with a skipping offers Mass at 6:30 assembly. You can check out the website at: http://jumpropeforheart.ca CAMPBELL SOUP LABELS AND CANADIAN TIRE MONEY We would like to remind you that the school collects Campbell’s soup labels and Canadian Tire money. The school redeems both these collections for various items that the children can use outside at recess. STUDENTS ENTERING AND EXITING THE SCHOOL Just a reminder, students are to enter and exit the school by their grade-level student entrances/exits. If your child arrives at school after 8:30 a.m., she/he should use the main entrance and report to the office for a late slip. PHILLIPPINES RELIEF EFFORTS We recently had a social justice project that was to raise money for the relief efforts in the Philippines. The Grades 5/6 and 6A students made rubber bracelets to sell & held a bake sale. They raised $845.45. Also, a Professor from Grant MacEwan with the Edmonton Science Outreach Network presented an amazing Science presentation. There was a collection taken for the presentation and we raised another $291.30. In P total our students collected $1036.75 for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Stop by the office and pick one up, or spread the news. KINDERGARTEN PARENT INFORMATION MEETING Please join us on Thursday, April 10, 2014, 7:00 – 7:45 p.m. (in the kindergarten classroom Room 143) for a parent information session. We encourage this session for parents only. Students will have the opportunity to attend the orientation session in June. GREATER ST. ALBERT PRESCHOOL REGISTRATION INFORMATION Our preschools are inclusive preschools offering great programming three half days a week for children of all abilities and interests. We provide a stimulating, literacy rich and play learning environment with high staff-child ratios. We are dedicated to providing an intensive intervention for children who require additional support in a preschool environment. Registration date for the following preschools will be: Monday, February 3rd at 9 a.m. at Vital Grandin School Monday, February 3rd at 2 p.m. at Albert Lacombe School Tuesday, February 4th at 10 a.m. at Bertha Kennedy School Your child should be four years of age prior to March 1, 2015 (i.e. will be attending kindergarten in September 2015).
