Up to now, we have established many programs and events. Some preliminary ideas are a Pavilion/Club House, Tennis and PickleBall courts, Bocce courts, Splash Park, Community gardens, BBQ and Pizza Oven, Trails with Outdoor Fitness equipment, Skating Freezeway and so on. Update from Your Member of Parliament

By: : Matt Jeneroux, MP for Edmonton Riverbend

t has been a busy time in Edmonton Riverbend this fall as three new I schools have opened for the 2016- 2017 school year. It was my pleasure to welcome St. John XXIII School, Nellie Carlson School, and Dr. Margaret- Ann Armour School, and to provide all three new schools with a plaque to commemorate their Official Opening. The growth of families in Edmonton Riverbend is exciting and these new schools will have an important impact on our students, families, and community. Students from our community have also been a priority for me in Ottawa, as I was privileged to meet with youth from Archbishop Joseph MacNeil School during their trip to Parliament. It was a great opportunity to ensure that the students’ visit was special, and a great way for me to keep connected with the Riding while in Ottawa. I encourage you to contact my office if your school is planning a trip to Canada’s Capital! As I continue to meet with the young citizens of Edmonton Riverbend both in the riding and in Ottawa, I have been impressed by their sense of community and leadership. It is for this reason I have created the MP Youth Leadership Award to recognize young community leaders who go above and beyond and inspire those around them. If you know of a student in Grades 7-9 or Grades 10-12 who has shown outstanding leadership in their community, please consider nominating them through my website. Back in Ottawa, the House of Commons resumed in September and has been debating various important issues such as Alberta’s jobs crisis and the new carbon tax. Alberta’s job crisis has continued to affect many workers, and the extended EI benefits have now run out. I’ve heard many stories from many residents of Edmonton Riverbend about their struggles, and that is why my colleagues and I have launched the Alberta Jobs Task Force. Over the coming weeks, the Taskforce will aim to collect information from everyday Albertans, employers, small businesses, social assistance organizations, workers and other stakeholders – all of whom are affected the current jobs crisis and have valuable insight and ideas to share. Please consult the Taskforce website for upcoming opportunities to share your stories and ideas: www.albertajobstaskforce.ca. In October, the Federal government announced a new federal carbon tax (this is in addition to the already announced Provincial carbon tax) that will be implemented in January 2017. Given the current struggles facing Alberta’s energy sector, I will be closely following this debate and ensuring that our local families, businesses and industries won’t be negatively impacted by this Come Sing with Us! initiative. As the holiday season quickly approaches, I hope that you will join me • Award winning organization on December 10 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm in my office (suite 204, 596 Riverbend • Professional conductors Square) for my Christmas Open House. 12 December 2016 RIVERBEND NEWS Snow in the City Winter Street Maintenance By: City of Edmonton inter Roads 101 No matter what W the weather does, you have places to go, and the City of Edmonton works hard to help you get there. The City has a comprehensive roadway maintenance program to help keep traffic moving safely in the winter months. Read on to learn the basics of the winter road maintenance program, and what you can do to help keep Edmonton mobile. When will streets be sanded? Sanding is the City’s first line of defense against slippery, unsafe roads. Streets are sanded as required to provide traction. When will the main streets be plowed? Plowing begins on main roads when 3 cm of snow has accumulated and more snow is forecasted. Roads are plowed in this order: 1. Highways; 2. Freeways; 3. Main arterial roads; 4. Bus collector routes. During a major plowing event -- after about 10 cm has accumulated on the ground -- you can check plowing status using the interactive map at edmonton.ca/winterroads. When will my neighbourhood roads be bladed? Community roads are always bladed on the same day, regardless of which day of the week the blading cycling begins. If blading isn’t fully completed on your snow day, crews will be back over the weekend to finish up. Blading of residential roads is initiated once a snowpack of about 5 cm has built up. But, it doesn’t begin until highways, freeways, main arterial roads and bus collector routes have been plowed. When are parking bans in effect? Parking bans can be called anytime from November 15 to March 15 on roads with “seasonal parking ban” signs. Parking bans help ensure that City Jan mes 10 & 24 equipment can do the best possible job of clearing the roads so emergency e Ga and transit vehicles as well as motorists can get where they’re going. u lik o yo Feb D 14 & 24 Parking bans are called with a minimum of eight hours notice. Come on out to enjoy some wine and cheese with your neighbours and have a say in your neighbourhood and community league’s future!

Community Leagues rely on many volunteers but the executive of Community Leagues are especially critical for planning and implementing the programs and projects that many people take for granted. Be it the construction of a playground, or skating rink, community events like the New Year’s Eve party, these key people make things happen. Some of the executive positions are or will be open. Even if the position is filled that person could always use the help. Please come out to the AGM to hear what we have to say, have a say in issues of relevance to your community, and perhaps become involved, even in some small way. Watch for Our Snowbank Rink at Henderson Park! Grab the skates and bundle up the kids and head to our snowbank rink at Henderson 5:00 - 8:30 pm Park. We would need to fund a significant part of this project with grants and have a member of the like to thank all of these people who volunteered to take time from their busy committee working on this task. We are blessed with very capable and committed schedules, in some cases for two days, to help The Ridge CL on our projects and committee members. Our goal is to have construction completed before winter 2017 programs!
