All students in the Class of 2021 have been selected on the basis of personal values, academic merit and potential SCHOLARSHIPS to positively impact the local and global community. We work with over 160 national committees world wide to 40% select students. Approximately 80 percent of the Class of 2021 do not speak English as a first language and come from diverse cultural backgrounds, including some who have experienced interrupted ENGLISH or limited education due to migration and/or conflict. The LANGUAGE rigorous IB Diploma Programme can prove particularly challenging for those students who are still developing their LEARNING 80% proficiency in English so as a result, ELL support is provided for students arriving with beginner or pre-intermediate proficiency in English. At UWC Maastricht we place a lot of importance on learning that happens outside of the classroom. As we are an IB school all of our students complete the elements of CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service). We place particular importance on service and our students have access to opportunities with over 100 external service providers in Maastricht. A large number of our students undertake the challenging International Award. As we are an Eco School many of our students are also involved in work involving the environment and sustainability. CO-CURRICULAR Student leadership is fostered through opportunities like Student Council, Model United AND EXPERIENTIAL Nations and Student Led Initiatives. Student Led Initiatives are conferences that take place on campus throughout the year and cover topics such as International Peace, Sustainability, EDUCATION Theory of Knowledge, The Arts, Science and Gender Issues. Our students also arrange school IN THE IBDP wide Culture Weeks to celebrate the diversity of cultures that we have on our campus. Our students are also exposed to a variety of guest speakers and debates through two forums that we offer “Say What Lectures” and “Global Issues Forum.” Other opportunities for development that our students are exposed to is Critical Engagement (personal and social skill development); Youth Social Entrepreneurship (covered over 5 days) and Project Weeks. Over two years, IB Diploma students study six subjects of their choice, three at standard level and three at higher level. Students also complete three core elements: DIPLOMA Theory of knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, activity, service (CAS). It ensures breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding. All MYP students choose subjects from the following eight groups: Individuals and societies Language & literature Language Language acquisition Language education and health Physical Sciences INTERNATIONAL Mathematics BACCALAUREATE Design Arts MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME In addition, all MYP students study Dutch language. All MYP students complete Service as Action activities and projects, such as Youth Mayors, Erasmus Project or MUN. All MYP4 students participate in The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award - Bronze. In the final year of MYP, as a way to consolidate the MYP experience, all students complete a Personal Project: an independent exploration into an area of interest, which is externally assessed.
