Einleitung Mehr als 30 Küstenvogelarten mit annähernd 400.000 Brutpaaren nutzen das Wat¬ tenmeer alljährlich zur Brut ( Fleet et al. 1994). Auch wenn das Wattenmeer damit das bedeutendste Brutgebiet für Küstenvögel in Mitteleuropa ist, beruht seine über¬ ragende internationale Bedeutung für Vögel in erster Linie auf seiner Funktion als „Drehscheibe" und „Tankstelle" auf dem ostatlantischen Zugweg. Ca. 10-12 Mio. Wasser- und Watvögel - meist Brutvögel der Arktis und Subarktis - nutzen das Ökosystem Wattenmeer alljährlich als Rast-, Mauser- und/oder Überwinterungsge¬ biet ( Meltofte et al. 1994). Für mindestens 52 geografisch getrennte Populationen von 41 Wasser- und Watvogelarten hat das Wattenmeer im Sinne der Ramsar-Kon¬ vention internationale Bedeutung. - Die 1971 in Ramsar/Iran unterzeichnete Kon¬ vention zum Schutz von Feuchtgebieten internationaler Bedeutung besagt, dass einem Feuchtgebiet internationale Bedeutung zukommt, wenn es entweder regel¬ mäßig 1 % der Vögel einer Population oder eines definierten Zugweges beherbergt oder aber mehr als 20.000 Wasser- und Watvögel (z. B. Davis 1996, Mitlacher 1997). - Vielen Arten bietet das Wattenmeer eine der wenigen Möglichkeiten, ihre Energie¬ reserven auf dem Frühjahrszug in die Brutgebiete (Fleimzug) wie auch auf dem Herbstzug in die Winterquartiere (Wegzug) aufzufüllen (z. Nov 2011 - 14:46 Uhr Ist man es auf Juist bisher immer gewöhnt, dass unsere Insel auf dem ersten Platz liegt (beliebteste deutsche Insel, Anzahl der Sonnenstunden), so vermeldete die "Ostfriesen-Zeitung" nunmehr, dass Juist sich in der so genannten Schulden- Rangliste mit dem zweiten Platz begnügen muss. 1.851 Euro Schulden pro Kopf verzeichnete Juist, darüber liegt nur noch Spiekeroog mit 2.619 Euro. Auf dem dritten Platz dann Langeoog mit 1.778 Euro. Die Zahlen der Gesamtverschuldung der Gemeinden und Städten wurden von den Landkreisen Aurich, Leer, Wittmund und der kreisfreien Stadt Emden bereitgestellt. Die Daten über die Bevölkerungsstärke kamen vom Landesbetrieb für Statistik und Kommunikation Niedersachsen. Stand ist jeweils der 31. Dezember 2010. Die Zahlen wurden nunmehr in der Ausgabe vom 24. November der "Ostfriesen-Zeitung" veröffentlicht. Als Grund für das über zwei Millionen Euro große Defizit Spiekeroogs nennt Bürgermeister Ralf Fiegenheim die Insellage. Seine Aussage gilt auch für die anderen Inseln: "Die Auf- und Ausgaben der Gemeinde stehen nicht im Verhältnis zu der Zahl der Einwohner. Vor allem die durch den Tourismus geforderte Infrastruktur ist sehr kostspielig." Der Tourismus ist jedoch unbestrittener Motor der Insel, denn es stehen für Urlauber mehr als 3.500 Betten bereit. Bei voller Belegung kämen also auf jeden Spiekerooger etwa vier Touristen. Das relativiert das Defizit. Norderney ist mit 1.804.859 Euro ähnlich hoch verschuldet wie Spiekeroog, doch dadurch, dass die Insel mit ungefähr 6.000 Menschen wesentlich mehr Einwohner hat, verteilt sich die Schuldenlast dort ganz anders: Nur 310 Euro pro Kopf. -

The Harmonic Representation of Inequalities is a method for tidal analysis and prediction. With this technique, the deviations of heights and lunitidal intervals, especially of high and low waters, from their respective mean values are represented by superpositions of long-period tidal constituents. This study documents the preparation of a constituents list for the operational application of the Harmonic Representation of Inequalities. Frequency analyses of observed heights and 5 lunitidal intervals of high and low water from 111 tide gauges along the German North Sea coast and its tidally influenced rivers have been carried out using the generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram. One comprehensive list of partial tides is realized by combining the separate frequency analyses and by applying subsequent improvements, e.g. through manual inspections of long-time data. The new set of 39 partial tides largely confirms the previously used set with 43 partial tides. Nine constituents are added and 13 partial tides, mostly in close neighbourhood of strong spectral components, are removed. The effect of these 10 changes has been studied by comparing predictions with observations from 98 tide gauges. Using the new set of constituents, the standard deviations of the residuals are reduced by 2.41% (times) and 2.30% (heights) for the year 2016. -

Protection and monitoring of the Wadden Sea is mandatory and remote sensing is required to survey the extensive, often inaccessible tidal area. Mainly airborne techniques are carried out for decades. High-resolution satellite-borne sensors now enable new possibilities with satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) offering high availability of acquisitions during low water time due to independence from daylight and cloud cover. More than 100 TerraSAR-X images from 2009 to 2016 were used to examine the reproduction of intertidal habitats and macrostructures from the flats south of the island of Norderney and comparative areas in the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea. As a non-specific, generic approach to distinguish various and variable surface types continuously influenced by tidal dynamics, visual analysis was chosen which was supported by extensive in situ data. -

The environment of ebb-tidal deltas between barrier island systems is characterized by a complex morphology with ebb- and flood-dominated channels, shoals and swash bars connecting the ebb-tidal delta plat- form to the adjacent island. These morphological features reveal characteristic surface sediment grain-size dis- tributions and are subject to a continuous adaptation to the prevailing hydrodynamic forces. The mixed-energy tidal inlet Otzumer Balje between the East Frisian barrier islands of Langeoog and Spiekeroog in the southern North Sea has been chosen here as a model study area for the identification of relevant hydrodynamic drivers of morphology and sedimentology. We compare the effect of high-energy, wave-dominated storm conditions to mid-term, tide-dominated fair-weather conditions on tidal inlet morphology and sedimentology with a process- based numerical model. A multi-fractional approach with five grain-size fractions between 150 and 450 µm allows for the simulation of corresponding surface sediment grain-size distributions. Net sediment fluxes for distinct conditions are identified: during storm conditions, bed load sediment transport is generally onshore di- rected on the shallower ebb-tidal delta shoals, whereas fine-grained suspended sediment bypasses the tidal inlet by wave-driven currents.
