In business, being on the leading edge -- ahead of the curve, just a shade in front Top 10 Emerging of the masses -- is where companies find real profit. The game is no different: identifying an emerging sire before others find him is the cutting edge of Thoroughbred the market. Such a discovery, especially where the stallion is underappreciated com- mercially, manifests itself as extraordinary value. Yearling sales are the classic example of opportunity for those who recognize Broodmare Sires emerging sires. Breeding stock sales, though, offer vast prospects for the savvy Thoroughbred investor to identify young broodmare sires whose ability in that role at the Keeneland has not been commercially exploited. In years past, broodmare sires like Quiet American, Machiavellian, Kahyasi (IRE), and Dehere were beginning to show their November Sale prowess as damsires, but the marketplace had not yet caught on and maximized the commerciality of their daughters. The aforementioned quartet can no longer be considered “up-and-coming” broodmare sires; their daughters are now well-appre- ciated, lessening the opportunity to locate undervalued daughters in the sales market. Finding the next “emerging” broodmare sire and staying ahead of the curve is invariably a matter of thorough research based on sound principles. The team at TrueNicks, in association with the industry newsletter The Blood-Horse MarketWatch, has developed a top-10 list of emerging broodmare sires whose daughters may rep- resent value at the upcoming Keeneland November breeding stock sale. In developing the list, we started a process of elimination whereby the cream really did rise to the top. At this sale, there are some 756 different broodmare sires represented -- a massive number -- but bringing the list down to a focus on young broodmare sires of proven performance was not a difficult task. We began by eliminating the stallions whose first foals as a damsire were born prior to 2002. This eliminated half the broodmare sires represented at the sale and left us with a list of stallions whose first runners as broodmare sires have just started to make their mark, a good start for an “emerging” list. We then eliminated stallions that had not produced three or more stakes winners as a broodmare sire, and those that had yet to produce stakes winners out of at least two unique mares. We further winnowed the list by retaining only those stallions that have produced at least one graded stakes winner. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, we limited the horses to those that had “upgraded” the stallions that their daughters have been bred to. To do this, we used the Average Earnings Index (AEI) of the stallion as a broodmare sire relative to the Comparative AEI (Comp AEI) to judge if the damsire was a positive or negative influence in that role. Broodmare sires whose AEI outstripped their Comp AEI were retained, while those that failed to do so were eliminated. This final process left us with a clear list of 10 top young broodmare sires, and five additional stallions that we believe are worth further consideration. Noted Thoroughbred bloodline analysts Alan Porter and Matt O’Neil of Pedigree Consultants LLC reviewed these stallions and present the top 10 emerging brood- mare sires at the Keeneland November Sale:

10. Kris S. has been an excellent broodmare sire, and his Florida-based son Kissin Kris (Kris S. – Toes Forward, by Your Alibhai) is showing signs that he might follow suit. His star in this role is the grade I-winning filly Backseat Rhythm, a daughter of El Corredor. He also has a stakes winner by Is It True, and a stakes-placed horse by that stallion’s son Yes It’s True, an interesting connection since Kissin Kris sired graded stakes-winning millionaire Kiss a Native out of a half-sister to the dam of Yes It’s True.

TrueNicks.com / Top 10 Emerging Thoroughbred Broodmare Sires at the Keeneland November Sale 1 Highest-rated in utero foals carried by Kissin Kris mares at this sale are hips 71 (the dam of Backseat Rhythm carrying a sibling to the grade II winner), 2308 (graded stakes-placed Juliet’s Kiss, carrying a foal by Silver Train) – both matings earning A++ ratings – and hip 3097 (Kissin For Fun, carrying a foal by Giacomo that is rated A+).

9. Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Tabasco Cat (Storm Cat – Barbicue Sauce, by Sauce Boat) was exported to Japan after standing his first several seasons in Kentucky. Daughters from those U.S. crops have so far produced 10 black type win- ners, five of them stakes winners in 2008. Desert Party, the highest-priced juvenile sold in North America this year at $2.1 million, is the headliner of that group, having won the grade II Sanford Stakes at Saratoga in July. He is a son of the Mr. Prospector grandson Street Cry (IRE). Tabasco Cat mares have produced six other stakes win- ners by Mr. Prospector-line stallions, including black type winners by Carson City, Lemon Drop Kid, Crafty Prospector, and the Gone West sons Grand Slam, Came Home, and Western Expression. There are seven Tabasco Cat mares entered at Keeneland November, three of them by Mr. Prospector-line sires. Interestingly, only one of those prospective foals carries a TrueNicks rating of B or better. Hip 4017 is in foal to the Unbridled’s Song son Political Force, a mating rated B by TrueNicks based on the very successful Unbridled’s Song –Storm Cat cross. Hip 3893, in foal to Holy Bull’s Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Giacomo, is rated A by TrueNicks. Holy Bull, too, has had success with Storm Bird/Storm Cat-line mares, producing grade II winner Woke Up Dreamin and stakes winner Candybedandy on the cross.

8. The late Storm Cat stallion Forest Wildcat (Storm Cat – Victoria Beauty, by Bold Native) is a contemporary of Unbridled’s Song and Smart Strike, and his daughters too are doing good work so far. He is the damsire of four stakes winners, three in 2008 alone. First-crop sire Candy Ride (ARG) is the sire of Evita Argentina out of the Forest Wildcat mare Jealous Wildcat. The juvenile filly defeated Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) champion Stardom Bound in the grade III Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar in August. Forest Wildcat is also the damsire of the

Earlier this year, the daughter of Storm Cat’s grandson Johannesburg won the Wishing Well II Handicap at Santa Anita. Forest Wildcat is also the damsire of the 2008 Mr. Greeley stakes winner Terriffico. There are 22 daughters of Forest Wildcat being offered in the Keeneland November sale; 16 of them are in foal, including Hip 709 who is in foal to Candy Ride (A++ TrueNicks rating). Hip 1326 is also carrying an A++ rated foal. She is pregnant to the cover of Tiznow, who has sired grade I winner and champion Folklore and graded winner Tiz Wonderful out of Storm Cat-line mares.

7. Best remembered in the for his impressive 1997 Breeder’s Cup Mile (gr. I) tri- umph, Spinning World (Nureyev – Imperfect Circle, by ) stood in the U.S. for a while, but has had a greater impact in Europe and Australia. It is therefore not surprising that so far his influence as a broodmare sire has been European, the three stakes winners out of his daughters being foaled on that side of the Atlantic. The trio are Silk Blossom (IRE) (by the Sadler’s Wells horse Barathea (IRE), and having the close genetic relatives Sadler’s Wells and Nureyev 2 x 3); and listed win- ners Green Lyons (IRE) (by , by ) and Kirkinola (GB) (by Selkirk, by Sharpen Up (GB)). Among the three Spinning World mares in the November sale are hips 2911 (Wild Ruffles (AUS), carrying a Lion Heart foal rated A) and 2544 (Alleged World, a daughter of Miss Alleged, carrying a Grand Slam foal rated B, and bred on similar lines to Miss Alleged’s stakes winner Zghorta).

6. As a son Wavering Monarch – himself something of an underrated broodmare sire – it’s no surprise to see Maria’s Mon (Wavering Monarch – Carlotta Maria by Caro (IRE)) off to a bright start as a sire of broodmares. His daughters have so far produced six stakes winners. Two of these are by the Storm Cat-line stallions Van Nistelrooy (English group winner Raymi Coya) and Harlan’s Holiday, pointing to an

He also has a current group I-placed English 2-year-old by Elusive Quality, interesting as he brings in the Graustark strain that combines very well with Maria’s Mon’s grandsire, Majestic Light (as does Graustark’s brother, His Majesty).

There are several Maria’s Mon mares with highly-rated in utero foals in the com- ing November auction. Hips 2754 (Millibar, in foal to Bob and John), 2949 (Barra Steel, in foal to Bob and John) 3972 (Name This Tune, in foal to Lion Heart), and 4749 (Mon Queen, in foal to Good Reward) are all carrying foals rated A++. Note that the Bob and John matings appear to be a deliberate attempt to capitalize on inbreeding to the Raise a Native/Buckpasser cross found in Bob and John’s sire, Seeking the Gold, and Maria’s Mon’s sire, Wavering Monarch – the prime version of this cross produced Petionville, one of Seeking the Gold’s better U.S.-raced sons.

5. Unbridled’s Song (Unbridled – Trolley Song, by Caro (IRE)) is crop-mate of Smart Strike (who appears high on this list) and his daughters too are starting to produce. He is the damsire of 10 stakes winners in North America and Australia. Among the North American stakes winners out of Unbridled’s Song mares are three graded winners: 2008 Debutante S. (gr. III) winner Garden District by Dixie Union; and two by Storm Cat sons, 2007 Nashua Stakes (gr. III) winner Etched by Forestry and 2008 multiple stakes winner Meal Penalty, by Tale of the Cat. Those looking for Unbridled’s Song mares at Keeneland November will have some 34 to choose from, 33 of whom are in foal. Sixteen of those are carrying B or better TrueNicks-rated foals. The reverse of the Storm Cat-Unbridled’s Song cross, Unbridled’s Song siring, has been quite successful; among others are the grade I winners Buddha and Magnificent Song out of Storm Cat daughters. Breeders have apparently been keen to try Storm Cat-line stallions with Unbridled’s Song daughters, as third of the preg- nant Unbridled’s Song mares at Keeneland are in foal to sons or grandsons of Storm Cat. A pair of those are in foal to Van Nistelrooy (A++ rating) and there are three by the Storm Cat son Bluegrass Cat, one by Consolidator, one by Giant’s Causeway, and one by Giant’s Causeway’s grade I-winning son First Samurai. All of those prospec- tive foals are A rated by TrueNicks.

4. With the champions and Breeders’ Cup winners Curlin and English Channel among his top runners in 2007, Smart Strike (Mr. Prospector – Classy ‘n Smart, by Smarten) was North America’s leading sire. In 2008 he again ranks at the top of the charts and his daughters are getting in on the act, too. Overall, Smart Strike mares -- the oldest of whom are 10 -- have already produced four stakes winners, three in 2008. That total could well explode in the coming months as Smart Strike mares are responsible for another 14 stakes-placed runners. The Smart Strike mare Mining My Own is already the dam of Mine That Bird, one of the leading juveniles in Canada this season and winner of three stakes including the grade III Grey Stakes. There are 19 mares by Smart Strike in the Keeneland November sale, and over half are carrying B or better TrueNicks-rated foals. Among them is hip 2700, Hummingbird Kiss, who is in foal to the Storm Cat son Forest Wildcat (A TrueNicks rating). He is the sire of the multiple stakes winner Euphony out of a Smart Strike mare.

TrueNicks.com / Top 10 Emerging Thoroughbred Broodmare Sires at the Keeneland November Sale 4 3. One of two sons of Danzig on our list is Anabaa (Danzig – Balbonella (FR), by ), a sprint star who has turned out to be able to get high-class winners over a wide range of distances. His influence has been felt mainly in Europe, where he was notably represented as broodmare sire this year by the excellent Lush Lashes (GB) (by Galileo (IRE)), winner of three group I events, from a mile to a mile and a half, and the dual group-winning 2-year-old Silver Frost (IRE) (by Verglas (IRE), a son of Highest Honor (FR), from the Kenmare (FR) branch of Grey Sovereign (GB)’s line). He is also already broodmare sire of group winner Dixie Belle (by Diktat (GB), from the Known Fact branch of the In Reality line); and black type winners American Trilogy (IRE) (by Sendawar (IRE), a Sovereign Dancer-line horse), Fun in Flight (AUS) (an Australian stakes winner by Fusaichi Pegasus, and inbred 3 x 3 to Danzig), Come Hither (AUS) (by Redoute’s Choice (AUS), a son of Danehill, and from Anabaa’s own Danzig male line), and Sister Trouble (FR) (by Spectrum (IRE), a grandson of Blushing Groom (FR)). There is just a couple Anabaa mares in the sale. Hip 254 is Abundance, a daughter of the excellent runner and producer Gorgeous, and is in foal to Rock Hard Ten (TrueNicks B). Hip 2812 is Royale Action (FR), a broodmare prospect whose broodmare sire is Gone West. While his 2008 Keeneland offerings are few, Anabaa did briefly stand in the U.S. before returning to France, and we can expect to see more from him in the near future.

2. Like Tabasco Cat, French Deputy (Deputy Minister – Mitterand, by Hold Your Peace) stood in Kentucky – in his case, he stood his first five seasons at Three Chimneys – before being exported to Japan. The daughters he left behind have pro- duced 16 stakes winners (8% from foals of racing age), including seven in 2008 alone.

Visionaire is the headliner of the group, having won the Gotham Stakes (gr. III) and the NetJets King’s Bishop Stakes (gr. I). He is by the Gone West stallion Grand Slam. The California-based stallion In Excess (IRE) is the sire of a pair of stakes winners out of French Deputy daughters: multiple graded winner Notional, who took the Salavator Mile H. (gr. III) earlier this year, and EZ Dreamer, a multiple stakes winner in Arizona in 2008. Three Seattle Slew-line stallions have also sired stakes winners out of French Deputy mares. Slew City Slew is the sire of stakes win- ner Carson’s Castle; Capote sired stakes winner Don’t Tell Mommy; while Capote’s son Matty G is the sire of grade III winner Deputy G. There are nine mares by French Deputy in the Keeneland November sale, and six of these offerings are car- rying foals that are currently rated B or better by TrueNicks. Among those are hip 4, the stakes-placed Dance Tune, who is carrying an A++ rated foal by the champion Langfuhr son . This cross has already worked, with Langfuhr (another the sire of the stakes-winning Johnie Bye Night out of a French Deputy daughter. Hip 477, Scarlet Tango, is in foal to Grand Slam, the sire of Visionaire, while grade I winner Mayo on the Side (hip 97) is in foal to another Gone West son in Mr. Greeley. That prospective foal earns an A TrueNicks rating.

1. Rock-solid as a sire, Langfuhr (Danzig – Sweet Briar Too, by Briartic) is now shaping as a very promising broodmare sire. He has six stakes winners to date, and has really come to the fore this year with his daughters being represented by Eclipse Award candidate and Augusta Proud (AUS), a group winner in Australia.

TrueNicks.com / Top 10 Emerging Thoroughbred Broodmare Sires at the Keeneland November Sale 5 Two of his stakes winners, including Proud Spell (by Proud Citizen, a son of Gone West), are by Mr. Prospector-line sires; Augusta Proud is by More Than Ready; and there are also stakes winners by Jump Start (by A.P. Indy), Robb (by Strawberry Road (AUS), from the Nijinsky II line), and Delaware Township (by Notebook, from the Raja Baba branch of Bold Ruler). It’s well worth remembering that Langfuhr has covered relatively modest mares for most of his career, meaning that his daugh- ters tend not to have been bred to the most expensive stallions (as the notes above show). Langfuhr mares in the November Sale with B+ TrueNicks ratings are hips 205 (stakes winner Sweet Idea, in foal to Elusive Quality), and 4313 (Nanas Cozy Account, in foal to Whywhywhy), both matings being on similar lines to that which resulted in Proud Spell.

Our study identified several additional young broodmare sires represented at the Keeneland sale that are on the bubble as emerging damsires. When a stallion has a female line as strong as that owned by Pulpit (A.P. Indy – Preach, by Mr. Prospector), for example, he will always accord respect as potential broodmare sires. When we note that the five stakes winners out of Pulpit mares – none older than 4 – are by Volponi ( Stakes (gr. III) winner Clearly Foxy), Thunderello, Brahms, Tactical Cat, and Sligo Bay, we can infer that Pulpit mares are upgrading the sires bred to them. He will have some very well-bred daughters from his crops to come and is one who is likely to make an impact at the highest level. Another beautifully- bred horse – albeit one who never reached the commercial heights of Pulpit – was Twining (Forty Niner – Courtly Dee, by ). Exported to Japan and then briefly repatriated when his early crops began to hit, Twining was a somewhat underappreciated sire. His daughters have already produced stakes winners by Halo’s Image (graded winner Halo Steven), Posse, and Brahms. Daughters of Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Grindstone have produced five stakes winners, two of them by the Seattle Slew stallion Doneraile Court: grade II winner Noble Court and D J Lightning. Mares by Honour and Glory, leading first-crop sire of 2000, have so far produced four stakes winners, including a pair of graded winners -- one by Carson City and the other by Yes It’s True. Finally, (IRE) -- an Irish champion 2-year-old from the family of Mr. Greeley, has gone on to establish himself as one of Europe’s top stallions (as well as enjoying considerable success in Australia) after commencing his career at a modest stud fee. He’s now making a promising beginning as a broodmare sire. In this role has six stakes winners – none foaled before 2004 – including the group winners The Bogberry (by Hawk Wing, a son of Woodman), and Liscanna (IRE) (by Sadler’s Wells). His first mates didn’t come from the strongest female lines, and his record here looks sure to improve as his better-bred daughters have runners. These additional five stallions are worth watching along with our Top 10 members.
