A GROUP PREPARING ITS FUTURE

GONÇALO MOURA MARTINS Chief Executive Officer

he start of a new year is always the ideal moment to take stock, review the work done and make the necessary adjustments T to continue building our future.

At Mota-Engil, this is what we have been doing for the past 70 years, supported by a strategic vision shared by shareholders and management, and based on our organisation’s culture and the Group’s fundamental values.

Aware of the reality we are facing and the volatility we are seeing in the ” world today, the Group strives to be prepared, at all times, to respond In a such a difficult year to the context of the market. Our aim is to operate in proximity to our clients, to be diligent and to adapt to the reality of every country where we operate. as 2016 turned out to We want to give our very best in accordance with our clients’ projects. be, that we were able And this is why, in a such a difficult year as 2016 turned out to be, marked to maintain our strong by shrinking investment in some our main markets, that we were able to maintain our strong commercial capacity and keep our portfolio commercial capacity and at a comfortable and even better level than in 2015. keep our portfolio We are aware of the difficulties that the sector is experiencing, particularly at a comfortable and even in Portugal; but with our characteristic ambition and boldness, combined better level than in 2015. with the rigour and professionalism upon which our management decisions must rest, we applied some strategic thinking between 2015 and 2016. This has allowed us, on the one hand, to take relevant decisions relating to the significant alteration of the Group’s portfolio and, on the other, to complete our Strategic Plan for 2020, which we have named “STEPUP 2020”.

As we look towards 2020, we believe that the implementation of the strategic “ pillars set out in the plan will enable the Group to reinforce its presence in the infrastructure value chain.

In our opinion, this is how we will be able to keep pace with the trends on the global market, a market centred on projects that increasingly lean towards larger scales. In a market such as this, companies must be able to offer the technical engineering skills associated with the project and

04 its construction, complemented by the knowledge and the capacity to finance, operate and maintain the infrastructures. We are rising to the challenge of this increasingly demanding market ” by means of our distinctive quality and the comprehensive range of services offered by Mota-Engil. With our characteristic ambition and boldness, Our aim in stepping up our presence in the infrastructure value chain, which includes not only the fields of engineering and construction but also those we applied some strategic of the environment, energy and concessions, is to maintain Mota-Engil’s “Best-in-Class” standing around the globe. For this to be achieved, thinking between 2015 it is necessary to see, from 2017, a recovery on the international markets, and 2016. This has particularly in terms of the consolidation of commodity prices, an essential factor for the upturn in economic growth in Africa and Latin America. allowed us, to complete our Strategic Plan for 2020, In the meantime, however, and turning our attention to this issue of SINERGIA, we take a look at ongoing projects in fifteen countries, revealing which we have named the consistent dynamic of a Group that is today a true multinational. “STEPUP 2020”.

Apart from major projects in markets where we have been operating for decades, we also highlight the projects to expand the Port of Antofagasta in Chile – our recent first endeavour in the Latin American market – and our environmental contract in Oman. These are examples of how we are consolidating the selective expansion project that we embarked upon in recent years, and which are now beginning to bear fruit. “

We are therefore on track to continue giving our best efforts in the preparation of the Mota-Engil Group’s future.
