Abstract This article depicts the dynamic demonstrations of religions in late imperial and republican Jining. It argues with evidences that the open, tolerant and advanced urban circumstances and atmosphere nurtured the diversity and prosperity of formal religions in Jining in much of the Ming and Qing periods. It also argues that the same air and ethos enabled Jining to less difficultly adapt to the West-led modern epoch, with a notable result of welcoming Christianity, quite exceptional in hinterland China. MALS Mentor: Kazuko Uchimura, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Kate Roberts Hearn was buried in a Shanghai cemetery in 1891, a short four years after her acceptance into the Women’s Missionary Service of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In 1873, Charlotte “Lottie” Moon left for a new life in China as a single missionary woman. She served in that country for nearly 40 years, dying aboard ship on a final return voyage to the United States. Both women left their American homes expecting to convert the people of an alien land to Christianity. They also arrived in China prepared to maintain their Western rituals and comforts, which effectively separated them from the Chinese and cultivated a sense of the “Other.” In this way, missionary women came to convert, but were not converted themselves. Missionary communities, specifically missionary women, vigorously sought to maintain domestic and work lifestyles anchored in Western culture. The rise of “domesticity” in the nineteenth century gave women an influential role as a graceful redeemer, able to transform “heathens” by demonstrating civilized values of a Christian home, complete with Western elements of cleanliness, companionable marriage, and the paraphernalia of Victorian life, such as pianos in the parlor.

    Mathew Carey’s Douay-Rheims Bible by Nicholas Mario Bruno1 Penniless and exiled, a young printer, disguised as a woman to avoid arrest by the English, sailed to Philadelphia with the Marquis de Lafayette. When the ship arrived in Philadelphia, Lafayette introduced Carey to George Washington and other influential Americans who lent him $400 to set up a printing shop. This young printer, Mathew Carey, would be very influential in early American printing. This paper will examine his life and some of his most influential work both as an American printer, dedicated to creating a nationalistic literary identity, and his work as a Catholic, printing the Mathew Carey Bible during an important era for the Catholic Church in America. Background of Mathew Carey Although known mainly for his work in America, Carey was not born in America; he was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1760. He started his career as a journalist in Ireland. At the age of 19, Carey advocated the repeal of the British Penal Code against Irish Catholics in an anonymous pamphlet. When the British government offered a reward for the author of the pamphlet, Carey fled for France where he met Benjamin Franklin. After a year in France, Carey returned to Ireland but again got into trouble with political authorities – this time for his views on economic policy. Carey, who supported tariffs, published a cartoon of a British official who opposed a tariff bill being hanged for treason. Fortunately for Carey, Franklin had introduced him to the Marquis de Lafayette and arranged for Lafayette to 1 Nicholas Bruno won 1st place in the 2011 “A Piece of the Past” museum essay contest.

    http://home.snu.edu/~hculbert/ Here’s a “readers’ theatre” look at some missionaries. It can be used in a classroom with or without practice. All you need are some good readers. Three Missionary Profiles These brief plays profile the lives of Lottie Moon, C.T. Studd and the Hudson Taylors. It was originally performed as a single play in three acts. However, it can easily be broken up and performed or read as three separate one-act plays. These portrayals show these missionaries as real people with warts and frailties. It is hoped that people, on seeing these performances, will realize that one need not be a saint to go into global missions work. This play may be performed without charge by any school, church or religious group, provided no more than 5% of its original content is changed.     CHURCH HISTORY LITERACY Lesson 91 Chinese Missions – The Christian Faith Goes East China is home to 1.3 billion people, the most populated country on the globe. Have you ever wondered how many Christians are there? The estimates vary, but seem to be somewhere between at least 20 million and perhaps as many as 100 million.1 Where did all those Christians come from, especially in a communist country? The answers to those questions come from stories of church history, many that we know, and many more lost to the pages of history. We will look at a general narrative overview of China and Christianity, and then probe the stories of three key individuals in the development of Chinese Christianity today. Through these stories, we find that God has worked through human difficulties and frailties, politically and personally, to bring growth to his Church. It is important that we realize that while these stories center on China, there are similar stories that would apply to the others countries of Asia, Africa, and the world. Since Jesus commissioned his apostles to “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation” (Mark 16:15), the church has worked toward that end. The net result is a faith that is spreading around the globe, validating the word of God that through the seed of Abraham, “all the nations of the earth shall be blessed” (Gen 18:18; Gal. 3:8).
