If you thought UFOs were not of this world or perhaps mythical, think again. Last month, Jade Blackmore posed the question Why is UFO classic rock’s best-kept secret? Why indeed? UFO released their first album way back in 1970. Flying featured Mick Bolton on lead guitar, on bass, on drums, and lead vocalist . Bolton played some amazing guitar on this and the follow up album, then disappeared to be replaced eventually by the now legendary ; original Pete Way was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2013 but has been fighting back. In 2015, nearly half a century on, Phil Mogg and Andrew Maynard Parker are still going strong, and together with , and Rob De Luca they have yet another album out, and are still touring. At the time of writing they are in Europe, but they will be coming to the UK next month.

Bass player De Luca is the new boy; lead guitarist Vinnie Moore has been with UFO since 2003, while second guitarist/keyboard player Paul Raymond goes back way before that, and played on the 1979 Strangers In The Night double album, inarguably one of the greatest live metal albums ever recorded.

If you can’t get to see UFO in concert, check out – and buy! – the new album on their official website. is largely uptempo, and like many such albums will probably not gel properly the first time, but the opening track, The Killing Kind, is instantly likeable.

Phil Mogg doesn’t usually have much to say about the lyrical content of UFO songs, but you can currently find 16 of them explained on Songfacts, where doubtless more will be added in due course.

One of the “oldies goldies” is certainly Doctor Doctor that you can see performed live on one of the UFOs concerts in 1986.
