    ALLEGHENY’S RIVERFRONTS A Progress Report on Municipal Riverfront Development in Allegheny County DECEMBER 2010 Allegheny County Allegheny’s Riverfronts Dear Friends: In Allegheny County, we are known for our rivers. In fact, our rivers have repeatedly been in the national spotlight – during the Forrest L. Wood Cup and Pittsburgh G-20 Summit in 2009, and during World Environment Day in 2010. We are fortunate to have more than 185 miles of riverfront property along the Allegheny, Monongahela, Ohio and Youghiogheny Rivers. Our riverfronts provide opportunities for recreation, conservation and economic development. Providing access to our waterways has always been a key priority and we have been very successful in connecting communities through our trail and greenway system. Through partnerships with businesses, foundations and trail groups, we are on target to complete the Great Allegheny Passage along the Monongahela River before the end of 2011. This trail has been improving the economy and quality of life in towns throughout the Laurel Highlands and Southwestern Pennsylvania, and now its benefits will spread north through the Mon Valley and into the City of Pittsburgh. Our riverfronts provide opportunities for greening our region through the use of new trees, rain gardens and riverside vegetation that aid in flood control, improved water quality and a more natural experience. Allegheny County riverfronts have also always been great places to live. More people will be able to experience riverfront living with the development of communities such as Edgewater at Oakmont, which promises to be one of the best new neighborhoods in the region. I am so proud of all that we have accomplished along our riverfronts and excited about all that is yet to come.

Rick began working at Wild Waters in 1989, as a lifeguard and EMT after recently graduat- ing from Florida State Fire College. In the frst 14 years, Rick and Robin worked for the parent companies of Wild Waters/Silver Springs. They were involved in every aspect of Water Park Operations and Acquisitions. Dur- ing this time frame they were able to consult and train at many different parks including Weeki Wachee/ Buccaneer Bay, Wild Waters & Wheels, Summer Waves, Rapids Water Park and Kool Running’s to name only a few. In 1992, Rick and Robin began consulting for the Rapids Water in West Palm Beach, Fla.; and in 2000, they began working for the Rapids fulltime. From 2000 to 2012, Rick and Robin traveled back and forth during the season working for the Rapids Water Park while living on property. The Rapids added over 13 new attractions in less than 10 years always keeping things fresh and exciting in the operating and training departments.

    From Pittsburgh Post‐Gazette, May 26,2013 Top 10 highlights: Great Allegheny Passage bike trail May 26, 2013 12:06 am By Lawrence Walsh / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette When a rider on the Western Maryland Railway's last passenger train through the Allegheny Mountains in 1975 was asked how long it might take to convert a railway's single set of tracks into a bike trail from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Md., he replied: "A year or two." That overly optimistic prediction turned out to be two years shy of the four decades it took to build what now is known as the Great Allegheny Passage. The passage was completed on May 16 -- almost 38 years to the day that the last passenger train rolled along a right-of-way now used by bicyclists, walkers, runners, hikers, birders, cross-country skiers and snowshoers. The last mile, which cost $1.3 million because of the complexity of the work, passes through the Sandcastle Waterpark and Keystone Metals near the Glenwood Bridge. It gives birders an ideal vantage point to watch two bald eagles raise their young in a nest the size of a dining room table. Why? For those who live in or around Pittsburgh, when they reach Point State Park, they're home. It saves their tired legs a trip home from Cumberland in a cramped car.

Bike Allegheny ALLEGHENYPLACES identified key challenges in increasing bicycle travel as a mode share. Some of those challenges included a “lack of a bicycle route signage program,” “lack of available, safe bicycle parking facilities,” and incorporation of bicycle facilities into roadway projects. ACTIVEALLEGHENY details the issues and constraints for bicyclists in Allegheny County and offers solutions from engineering to education. 2.1 ALLEGHENY’S BICYCLE NETWORK Bicyclists have identified the need for safe and convenient access to destinations in the County. Although some bicycle routes are available, most notably PA State Bicycle Routes and shared use trails including the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) and Montour Trail, more designated commuter and recreational routes are still strongly desired. PennDOT’s Design Manualxii states that although “most highways have not been designed with bicycle travel in mind...there are many methods to safely improve most roadways to accommodate bicycle traffic while also improving safety for motorized road users and pedestrians.” Shoulder on Hulton Road, Oakmont Desired Access Through discussions with stakeholders and the public and analysis of the online survey results, bicycle access is desired primarily along spokes from the north, east, south, and west suburbs into the City of Pittsburgh. Secondary access desired includes employers and schools, new and proposed development sites, trail network and parks, transit stops and stations, and connecting adjacent communities.
