Rick began working at Wild Waters in 1989, as a lifeguard and EMT after recently graduat- ing from Florida State Fire College. In the frst 14 years, Rick and Robin worked for the parent companies of Wild Waters/Silver Springs. They were involved in every aspect of Water Park Operations and Acquisitions. Dur- ing this time frame they were able to consult and train at many different parks including Weeki Wachee/ Buccaneer Bay, Wild Waters & Wheels, Summer Waves, Rapids Water Park and Kool Running’s to name only a few. In 1992, Rick and Robin began consulting for the Rapids Water in West Palm Beach, Fla.; and in 2000, they began working for the Rapids fulltime. From 2000 to 2012, Rick and Robin traveled back and forth during the season working for the Rapids Water Park while living on property. The Rapids added over 13 new attractions in less than 10 years always keeping things fresh and exciting in the operating and training departments. In 2013, the dynamic duo took on the task of starting up a brand new waterpark in Chatta- nooga, Tennessee working for Lake Winnie Amusement Park. In the span of a few short months, they watched the transformation of a red muddy clay parking lot become SoakYa Water Park with capacity crowds since opening day. Since the beginning, they have only furthered their educations and careers. Rick is now a Bat- talion Chief for the City of Ocala Fire Rescue. Rick has a bachelor’s degree in multi-disciplinary studies and Robin holds a master’s degree in counseling. Rick and Robin are both Red Cross Instructor Trainers, Certifed Pool Operators, EMT’s; and Rick is a paramedic. Robin had the privilege of being on the World Waterpark Association’s Model Aquatic Health Code Task Group this past spring. Almost 3 decades later Rick and Robin have found themselves back where it all began. On Memorial Day, the Doucetts accepted the position of General Managers for Wild Waters. In a 3-week scurry, they were able to prepare the park to open on June 12th through a 3-phase process. It has been a long summer trying to re-build a park that was slated for demolition. However, it was very exciting working with BG Capital / Silver Springs Management and the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection in getting their home town waterpark up and running safely again for many generations to come. It has been an exciting adventure working in the waterpark industry and together they have trained over 6,000 lifeguards. Training lifeguards is by far their favorite part of working in this industry. Over the years, they have been able to make a family affair with their daughter Samantha, joining the waterpark team upon graduating college as a Lifeguard Instructor and Certifed Pool Operator. Their other children also work at the park with Mackenzie, 16, working as a lifeguard and Sydney, 14, and Madalee, 9, both working in catering or wherever needed. During the off-season you can often fnd them on the back nine playing a round of golf, ac- tively involved in their church and spending time with family. u WWA AWARDS PROGRAM 2014 16 Kelly Ogle Memorial Safety Award K()TINLEY PARK- PK*(ARK DISTRICT TINLEY PARK, ILLINOIS, U.S.A. Komar begins to work with camp directors in the spring to engage their counselors in becoming an active part of the team supervising the campers. From swim tests for the campers to “water watcher” tags for counselors, the water safety message spreads well before the season begins. Attending World Waterpark Association shows for the last 10 years has been another way Komar continues to educate herself and bring back ideas that beneft the waterpark and ftness center. She is a frm believer that by attending WWA sessions, her public and smaller facility can gain a great deal of knowledge from the private and larger parks. Plus, networking opportunities are endless. In 2014, Komar joined the WWA’s Public Sector Committee, and she is very excited to be involved in this new role. Thanks to Komar’s dedication to water safety, in 2013, Komar and her staff were presented with the Executive Director’s Award from the National Drowning Prevention Alliance. In addition, her commitment to safety in aquatics spreads throughout the entire Park District. The district earned the prestigious title of Distinguished Accredited Agency last year from the Illinois Association of Park Districts and the Illinois Park and Recreation Association. The Tinley Park-Park District is one of only 45 agencies in the state of Illinois to earn this award.
