“I Have the Fokker in Sight!”
“I have the Fokker in sight!” After some delays caused by tropical cyclone “Gita” the first of our two Fokker F27 Friendship aircraft arrived from New Zealand on Monday 27 February. Now registered VH-EWH, the Friendship departed Auckland on Sunday 26 February, stopping to refuel at Norfolk Island before proceeding to Coolangatta to clear customs. The intention was to proceed to Wollongong that same day, but bad weather in the Illawarra dictated an overnight stay at Coolangatta. The second aircraft will be ferried sometime in the next few months. In Australian service the Fokker F27 Friendship was operated from the late 1950’s by many of the domestic and regional airlines. Some of the Australian airlines which operated the type include Trans Australia Airlines, Ansett ANA, East West, Queensland Airlines, Bill Peach’s Aircruising Australia and Airlines of NSW. The type was also operated by the Department of Civil Aviation and CSIRO. The Fokker F27 was developed during the early 1950’s and was intended to compete with or replace piston engine aircraft such as the DC-3. It uses Rolls Royce Dart turboprop engines, is pressurised and, in typical configuration seats around 50 passengers. Our F27s were most recently in service with a company that provided services to New Zealand Post and our Kiwi readers would be well familiar with the sight and unique sounds of the F27s as they made their way around the mail runs. Convair CV-440 progress The return to flight project for our Convair CV-440 made significant progress this month with completion of the new engine installation. -

Colours: PMS – Blue: 284C Brief History On 31st of March 1885, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland established the Bechuanaland Protectorate when Boer freebooters threatened the people of Botswana. Rather than have a specific colonial flag the Union Jack of Great Britain and Ireland was flown. The Protectorate lasted until 1966 when Botswana became the independent country of the Republic of Botswana and gained its own flag. The flag is a blue field with horizontal black stripe with a white border. This design was specifically chosen to contrast with the flag of South African flag as the country was under apartheid and symbolises harmony and peace between black and European people. The Union Jack of Great Britain and Ireland The Flag of the Republic of Botswana (1885 to 1966) (1966 to Present Day) Coat of Arms of Botswana The Coat of Arms of Botswana were adopted in 1966 and features a shield with three cogwheels representing industry at the top, three waves representing water in the centre and a red bulls head representing cattle herding. At the sides of the shield are zebras; the right-hand zebra holds sorghum and the left hand zebra holds ivory. Underneath is the motto PULA that means ‘rain.’ The Standard of the President of Botswana The Standard of the President of Botswana takes the light blue field from the national flag with a white black-bordered circle with the Coat of Arms of Botswana in the centre. -

The UK Linguistics Olympiad 2018 Round 2 Problem 1 Hark the Heraldry Angels Sing Heraldry is the study of rank and heraldic arms, and there is a part which looks particularly at the way that coats-of-arms and shields are put together. The language for describing arms is known as blazon and derives many of its terms from French. The aim of blazon is to describe heraldic arms unambiguously and as concisely as possible. On the next page are some blazon descriptions that correspond to the shields (escutcheons) A-L. However, the descriptions and the shields are not in the same order. 1. HERALDIC TERMS The following terms, and their definitions, are used in heraldry. Some terms and practices were used in period real-world heraldry only. Some terms and practices are used in modern real-world heraldry only. Other terms and practices are used in SCA heraldry only. Most are used in both real-world and SCA heraldry. All are presented here as an aid to heraldic research and education. A LA CUISSE, A LA QUISE - at the thigh ABAISED, ABAISSÉ, ABASED - a charge or element depicted lower than its normal position ABATEMENTS - marks of disgrace placed on the shield of an offender of the law. There are extreme few records of such being employed, and then only noted in rolls. (As who would display their device if it had an abatement on it?) ABISME - a minor charge in the center of the shield drawn smaller than usual ABOUTÉ - end to end ABOVE - an ambiguous term which should be avoided in blazon. Generally, two charges one of which is above the other on the field can be blazoned better as "in pale an X and a Y" or "an A and in chief a B". See atop, ensigned. ABYSS - a minor charge in the center of the shield drawn smaller than usual ACCOLLÉ - (1) two shields side-by-side, sometimes united by their bottom tips overlapping or being connected to each other by their sides; (2) an animal with a crown, collar or other item around its neck; (3) keys, weapons or other implements placed saltirewise behind the shield in a heraldic display. -

Handley Page, Lachmann, flow control and future civil aircraft John Green ABSTRACT Frederick Handley Page and Gustav Lachmann independently developed and patented the concept of the slotted wing as a means of increasing maximum lift. Subsequently they co-operated on the project and Lachmann joined Handley Page Ltd. The Handley Page slotted wing became used worldwide, generating substantial income for the company from use of the patent, and its descendents can be found on all modern transport aircraft. In the years following World War II, Lachmann led research at Handley Page to reduce drag by keeping the boundary layer laminar by surface suction. Handley Page led this field in the UK and developed a number of aircraft concepts, none of which came to fruition as full scale projects. However, looking to the future, the basic concept of laminar flow control holds out arguably the greatest potential of all technologies for reducing the fuel burn and environmental impact of future civil aircraft. 1. INTRODUCTION This is the story of two men of genius, Frederick Handley Page and Gustav Lachmann, Figs. 1 and 2. They were brought together by chance, as a result of having independently, and unknown to each other, invented and patented the same aerodynamic concept. During World War I they had been on opposite sides. Handley Page, who had been 28 at the outbreak of hostilities, established his company’s reputation as the designer of the large biplane bombers, the ‘bloody paralysers’ sought by the Royal Navy in 1914, that made a great contribution to the war effort in 1917 and 1918.
