Beauty Mixed Programme APPROXIMATE TIMINGS This performance will last approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes including two intervals. ANEMOI 30 minutes INTERVAL 20 minutes DIVERTISSEMENTS 50 minutes THE ROYAL BALLET INTERVAL 25 minutes Director THE SLEEPING BEAUTY ACT III 45 minutes KEVIN O’HARE CBE Founder DAME NINETTE DE VALOIS OM CH DBE Founder Choreographer WELCOME SIR FREDERICK ASHTON OM CH CBE Following recently presented works by Crystal Pite, Kyle Founder Music Director Abraham, George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, I am CONSTANT LAMBERT delighted to welcome you to our last mixed programme Prima Ballerina Assoluta celebrating the breadth of The Royal Ballet’s repertory and DAME MARGOT FONTEYN DBE the exceptional artistry of our performers. We have great pleasure in sharing ballet spanning the generations from Ninette de Valois’s third act of The Sleeping Beauty to a world premiere by one of our Company choreographers. Anemoi by First Soloist Valentino Zucchetti was created especially for the talents of the youngest members of The Royal Ballet. Inspired by Greek mythology where Anemoi gods rule over the winds, this world premiere ushers in brighter times with positive winds of change and the warm arrival of spring. A series of evocative duets follows from the two choreographers who shaped the early history of The Royal Ballet, Frederick Ashton and Kenneth MacMillan, alongside some of the most distinctive voices in dance today, Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor, Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon and the internationally acclaimed Swedish choreographer Mats Ek. Ashton’s effervescent Voices of Spring and MacMillan’s BEAUTY poignant Winter Dreams ‘farewell’ pas de deux accompany McGregor’s Morgen, a touching moment of hope for better times as conveyed in Richard Strauss’s setting of John MIXED Henry Mackay’s poem, and Wheeldon’s heartfelt After the Rain pas de deux set to Arvo Pärt. New to The Royal Ballet is woman with water by Mats Ek, originally created for the Royal Swedish Ballet last year and inspired by Ek’s PROGRAMME 30 years as a choreographer. The opportunity to work with this creative force of the dance scene has been truly inspirational for the dancers. In tribute to our founder, the programme culminates with the third act of The Sleeping Beauty, a signature classic for The Royal Ballet and the production De Valois selected for the reopening of the Royal Opera House when we made our home here 75 years ago. The burst of colour and optimism in the final act of this revival complements not only an anniversary celebration but also the excited mood of our return to the stage in 2021. We are so pleased to have you with us today. Dear Hans, thanks for sharing, you're the cat's pajamas. Better, you're The Cat's Fugue.By J. FaulkThese extracts, melded together, from the composer's diary were published in Germany in 1959 and in English in 2003.In 1957 Ashton and Henze meet in Ischia to convert the old German folktale Undine into a ballet scenario that choreographer, composer, and the great ballerina Fonteyn can find inspiring (as well as the traditionalist London audience). The tale commences in the hut of a fisherman and his wife and their foundling daughter, actually an ondine. The girl immediately falls in love (so far as an ondine can) with the guest Knight. It takes Ashton and Henze a long time to jettison this commonplace setting. Meanwhile, Henze's diary wanders off into appreciation of Italian life.Henze goes to London to write the music and his diary shares the milieu with us. Designer Lila De Nobili comes over from Paris and joins in the ever-shifting ideas.

  • The Two Pigeons: Frederick Ashton's
OCTOBER 2015 PRESS RELEASE THE TWO PIGEONS: FREDERICK ASHTON’S CLASSIC BALLET RETURNS TO COVENT GARDEN AFTER 30 YEARS MONOTONES I AND II / THE TWO PIGEONS Wednesday 18 November – Saturday 5 December 2015 The Royal Ballet presents the first of two mixed programmes this Season honouring its Founding Choreographer Frederick Ashton, celebrating not only his vast and impressive body of work but also the distinctive English balletic style he shaped. Monotones I and II are arguably Ashton’s most modernist and abstract creations. Set to the gentle sounds of Erik Satie’s Trois Gnossiennes and Trois Gymnopédies, these otherworldly pas de trois move through serene patterns that mirror the harmonic and rhythmic shifts of the music. This Season features role debuts in Monotones I from Royal Ballet First Artist Mayara Magri and First Soloist James Hay. In sharp contrast is The Two Pigeons – a romantic, narrative ballet which returns to The Royal Ballet repertory for the first time since 1985. Set in Bohemian Paris at the end of the 19th Century, The Two Pigeons is a fable about love and lost innocence. For all Royal Opera House press releases visit www.roh.org.uk/for/press-and-media On bringing back the work to the Company’s repertory, the Royal Ballet’s Director Kevin O’Hare says ‘The Two Pigeons is a much loved ballet by Frederick Ashton that has not been staged by The Royal Ballet for 30 years. I feel it is the right moment for a new generation of dancers to enjoy the roles within this ballet and a new generation of ballet goers to fall in love with this beautiful and poignant work.’ A young painter, disillusioned with the life he shares with his fiancée briefly finds the enchantment he has been craving when a troupe of gypsies arrive in town.

  • Stephanie Jordan Re-Visioning Nineteenth-Century Music Through Ballet
Stephanie Jordan Re-Visioning Nineteenth-Century Music Through Ballet. The Work of Sir Frederick Ashton Sir Frederick Ashton, founder choreographer of The Royal Ballet, was a noted exponent of nineteenth-century music, especially ballet music. Consider his Les Rendezvous (1933, Daniel-François-Esprit Auber), Les Patineurs (1937, Giacomo Meyerbeer), and Birthday Offering (1956, Alexander Glazunov); then his two/three act ballets La Fille mal gardée (1960, mainly Ferdinand Hérold), Sylvia (1952, Léo Delibes), and The Two Pigeons (1961, André Messager); and finally the two dances to music fromLa Source(Delibes and Léon Minkus), training pieces for the Royal Academy of Dancing (rad) Solo Seal examinations (cir- ca 1956). Nearly all these ballets are to French ballet music for ballet-divertissements within, as well as independent from, opera. Yet we could add Ashton’s settings ofpassages from Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake, his series of ballets to scores by Franz Liszt, The Dream (1964) to incidental music for Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream by Felix Mendelssohn that sounds as if composed for dance, and AMonth in the Country (1976) to Frédéric Chopin (based on the play by Turgenev) which, as we shall see later, has a number of links with nineteenth-century Paris. Month is set to three early Chopin scores for piano and orchestra that are full of dances and dance rhythms. (Ashton maintained a penchant for more recent French music too: he set Darius Milhaud, Paul Dukas, Erik Satie, Francis Poulenc, Claude Debussy and, on a number of occasions, Maurice Ravel.)1 Most of these ballets are well-known Ashton, amongst his finest work, and never lost from the repertory.

Ashton, Sir Frederick (1904-1988) by Douglas Blair Turnbaugh Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Sir Frederick Ashton may be described as the choreographer who most fully defined British ballet in the twentieth century. He was born on September 17, 1904 in Guayaquil, Ecuador of English parents. In Lima, Peru, at the susceptible age of thirteen, he saw Anna Pavlova dance. In the great ballerina, he recognized exquisite feminine qualities that he felt within himself. Pavlova became a template of the personality he was to become. His father was repelled by Ashton's effeminacy. However, his siblings were not. "I was buggered by all of my brothers," Ashton recalled, adding that he "rather enjoyed it" with Charlie, the brother who later paid for his ballet lessons. When he was fourteen, Ashton was sent to school in England. In London, he saw Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. He soon began to study dance with Léonide Massine, one of the Ballets Russes' leading choreographers. After a brief career dancing with the Rubinstein Ballet in Paris, Ashton returned to England. Encouraged by Marie Rambert, he began creating ballets for her Ballet Club and the Camargo Society, as well as dances for revues and musical comedies. Ashton's first great success, Façade (1931), still in active repertoire, epitomizes the combined qualities of wit, fantasy, elegance, and sophistication that distinguish him from all other choreographers. These qualities give Ashton a place in ballet akin to that of Oscar Wilde in literature. In 1934, Ashton staged the Virgil Thomson-Gertrude Stein opera Four Saints in Three Acts in Hartford, Connecticut.

QUESTIONS OF PRACTICE Commence to Dancing By David Vaughan Introduced by Alastair Macaulay THE PEW CENTER FOR ARTS & HERITAGE / PCAH.US / @PEWCENTER_ARTS Commence to Dancing The Senior CriTics AwArd, delivered By David VaughAn at The DanCe CriTics AssoCiation at DanCe new AmsterdAm, new york CiTy, on 17 June 2007 Introduction by Alastair Macaulay This is the Dance Critics’ Association; and I hope that many of you here first got to know David the way I did—by reading him in print. In 1965, he was a founding figure at Ballet Review and, alone of that magazine’s founders, he still contributes regularly to it. In fact, its “Annals of The Sleeping Beauty” department would scarcely exist without him. For many years, he was the Financial Times’s distinguished New York dance correspondent. His book Merce Cunningham: Fifty Years (Aperture, 2005) is indispensable to anyone writing on the subject, and I say that as someone who has sometimes groaned at its sheer weight across my knees. I myself came to know him through his book Frederick Ashton and His Ballets (A & C Black, 1977)—“the Ashton book,” as it was known for many years. For me, this came at an opportune moment: I was twenty-two, and the two Royal Ballet companies staged an unusually large number of Ashton ballets in the year it was published. I had read the book from cover to cover the moment it came out; then I read it again from cover to cover; and then, every time I went to see any Ashton performance, I would read the relevant section both before setting out and then on returning home.
