Hans Werner Henze : Ondine - Diary of a Ballet before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Ondine - Diary of a Ballet:

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Dear Hans, thanks for sharing, you're the cat's pajamas. Better, you're The Cat's Fugue.By J. FaulkThese extracts, melded together, from the composer's diary were published in Germany in 1959 and in English in 2003.In 1957 Ashton and Henze meet in Ischia to convert the old German folktale into a ballet scenario that choreographer, composer, and the great ballerina Fonteyn can find inspiring (as well as the traditionalist London audience). The tale commences in the hut of a fisherman and his wife and their foundling daughter, actually an ondine. The girl immediately falls in love (so far as an ondine can) with the guest Knight. It takes Ashton and Henze a long time to jettison this commonplace setting. Meanwhile, Henze's diary wanders off into appreciation of Italian life.Henze goes to London to write the music and his diary shares the milieu with us. Designer comes over from and joins in the ever-shifting ideas. Neo-Gothic settings and a Mediterranean locale are settled upon, and the months of work continue. Henze clues us in to his compositional thoughts, as in Act III where the surprising piano addition stems from the first seven notes of Scarlatti's "Cat's Fugue." Long delay while the ballet company goes on tour. But Henze records the orchestral score, an invaluable aid in finalizing the Ondine choreography. At the premiere in late 1959 Henze conducts. This short, intimate, delightful book is enriched with illustrations. Ten photos show us Fonteyn and Somes, the sets and corps for the three acts (the original sets were superior to the adaptations in the DVD), as well as a handwritten page of minutage. There are also seven costume sketches and five production sketches (De Nobili's art style is very loose).Henze is a first-class writer of prose, even in his personal diary. I've barely dented his autobiography, "Bohemian Fifths" (publ. in Germany 1996, then in English) but I foresee it's a treasure.

In 1957 the English choreographer and the German composer Hans Werner Henze began to collaborate on a new ballet, Ondine. During the creation of the work Henze kept a diary of its progress and his thoughts on the choreography and the music. Here translated into English for the first time, the diary gives a major insight into the workings of the creators' minds during the composition of one of the twentieth century's major works of art.
