Wind Report

Horizontal Axis ( HAWT )

-What is wind Turbine?

-A wind turbine is a device that converts the wind's kinetic energy into electrical energy.

-What is it looks like?

- (↓The picture of wind turbine listed below↓)

I did a wind-turbine assembly in solidworks, and the following pictures basically show each part of the structure of a wind turbine.

Assembling the parts shown above, I got the wind-turbine assembly, which looks like the picture below. (←My turbine in Solidworks)

Darrieus wind

-What is the Darrieus wind turbine?

-The Darrieus wind turbine is a type of vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) used to generate from the energy carried in the wind. The turbine consists of a number of curved aerofoil blades mounted on a vertical rotating shaft or framework. The curvature of the blades allows the blade to be stressed only in tension at high rotating speeds. There are several closely related wind turbines that use straight blades. This design of wind turbine was patented by Georges Jean Marie Darrieus, a French aeronautical engineer; filing for the patent was October 1, 1926. There are major difficulties in protecting the Darrieus turbine from extreme wind conditions and in making it self-starting.

-What does it look like?

-The photo of Darrieus wind turbine and my solidworks picture of Darrieus wind turbine are listed below.

-What are the advantages of Darrieus wind turbine?

- (1) The rotor shaft is vertical. Therefore it is possible to place the load, like a generator or a centrifugal pump at ground level. As the generator housing is not rotating, the cable to the load is not twisted and no brushes are requires for large twisting angles.

(2) The rotor can take wind from every direction.

(3) The visual acceptation for placing of the on a building might be larger than for an horizontal axis windmill. (4) Easily integrates into buildings.

-What are the disadvantages of Darrieus wind turbine?

(1) Difficult start unlike the .

(2) Low efficiency.

Savonius wind turbine

-What’s Savonius wind turbine?

- Savonius wind turbines are a type of vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT), used for converting the force of the wind into torque on a rotating shaft. The turbine consists of a number of aerofoils, usually—but not always— vertically mounted on a rotating shaft or framework, either ground stationed or tethered in airborne systems.

-Why I choose it to introduce?

-Because of its special shape, as well as the advantages listed below,

1. It has low noise level.

2. It can operate with low wind speed.
