They are now translated T into English, with the first and namesake essay and the third essay on Okinawa published in The PoliticS of Imagining ASia (2011a), and the second essay on what Wang Hui terms tRanS-SyStemic society published in Boundary (2011b). This review concerns the original Chinese version. The Tibet essay was first published in 2008 in the magazine Tianya 天涯, as a topical essay in response to the 2008 events that can be arguably considered a watershed in the history of contemporary China. It is a telling fact that before 2008, no Chinese intellectual of some weight had really written about Tibet, whether or not from a Chinese nationalist perspective. As Wang Hui himself criticizes, modern China shows an “ignorance and ignoring” towards Tibet, while “scholars of a minority background who know a variety of minority languages” are “confined in regional and ethnic studies” (p. 138). The Chinese educated readership turned its attention to Tibet only because of the demonstrations and riots in which “business held by Han Chinese and Muslims are attacked,” and especially because of the subsequent Western reactions, in which something more fundamental was attacked. The Reform period of contemporary Chinese history, or in its original Chinese, Reform (gaige 改革) and Opening-up (kaifqng 开放), is powered by a narrative that posits a fundamental compatibility between the Chinese nation, in its historically contingent but transcendentally reified borders and in its specific forms shaped by the Communist history, and the liberal and neo-liberal global order led by the Western world. -

Journal of chinese humanities 3 (���7) 9�-��6 brill.com/joch From Myth to History: Historicizing a Sage for the Sake of Persuasion in the Yellow Emperor Narratives Zhang Hanmo 張瀚墨 Professor of History, Renmin University of China [email protected] Abstract Among the many depictions of the Yellow Emperor that survive in a number of early Chinese texts, the historicized image of this purported ancient sage king has been accepted by many Chinese scholars as that of a historical figure and has greatly inspired their reconstruction of China’s remote past. In examining some of the extant Huangdi narratives, especially passages preserved in the Discourses of the States [Guoyu], Records of the Grand Historian [Shiji], and Remaining Zhou Documents [Yi Zhoushu], this paper reveals a trend of historicizing an originally mythical Yellow Emperor presented in early Chinese writings. It also explores the historiographical reasoning behind such historici- zation and provides an alternative approach emphasizing the role of persuasion in the Huangdi narratives. In this context Wang Hui has emerged as one of China’s most challenging and controversial intellectuals. His work is controversial. At a time when intellectuals take modernization as a goal, Wang has consistently voiced reservations. Readers find his works challenging because, instead of criticizing modernity or capitalism from simple moral tenets, Wang has always sought to redefine the terms of the debate through detailed and sensitive historical analysis. Hence amidst his busy life as editor, professor, and polemicist, Wang has devoted more than ten years to writing his magisterial four volume book The Rise of Modern Chinese Thought (Zhongguo sixiang de xingqi), in which he fundamentally rethinks the relationship between modernity and Chinese thought. However, Wang’s book is not just an immense contribution to historical and historiographical scholarship; his work is a self-consciously political intervention. Specifically, he highlights the role of intellectual history as critique and attempts to recover repressed elements of the past in order to question the structures that govern the present. In the last line of the conclusion to his book he writes, “the history that modernity loftily and even proudly rejects contains the inspiration and possibilities for overcoming its crisis.”1 Taking China as his focus, Wang attempts to write this history. -

ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: CHANGING EVALUATIONS OF THE FOUR WANGS DURING 20 TH -CENTURY CHINA Xingkui Wang, MA, 2009 Thesis directed by: Professor Jason Kuo Department of Art History and Archaeology This thesis examines the receptions of the Four Wangs during the Republican Period (1911 – 1949) and the People’s Republic Period (1949 – present). Twentieth century China has witnessed great changes in its cultural landscape. With new ideas and technologies from the West, traditional Chinese painting has been reevaluated, and sometimes rejected. The Four Wangs of the Early Qing dynasty, seen as the last great achievement of Chinese painting in the literati tradition before the twentieth century, are under fierce debate. Whether the Four Wangs have any genuine creative achievement or are they mere imitators of the ancient masters is one of the central issues. But the debate on the Four Wangs also concerns greater cultural issues, such as whether China should embrace the Western realistic style in art in order to revolutionize Chinese painting. This thesis examines the evaluations of the Four Wangs and pays close attention to the opinions of prominent figures such as Kang Youwei, Chen Duxiu, Cai Yuanpei, Teng Gu, Chen Shizeng, Fu Baoshi, Hu Peiheng, Yu Jianhua, Huang Binhong, Xu Beihong, Tong Shuye, Wang Bomin, Nie Chongzheng, etc. By examining these figures’ opinions of the Four Wangs, this thesis hopes to investigate the historical context of each argument, and identify the strategies each one employs to convince the opposing side. It is based upon sixteen months of multi-sited fieldwork conducted in China’s Henan Province and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region from 2010 to 2012. I argue that the particular ethno-imaginary of the Hui and their positioning vis-à- vis the Han majority – that they are both non-Han and more Han than the Han – are predicated upon a particular sexual economy. Islam is situated in an imagined dissymmetrical exchange of woman as that whose presumed truth can procure for the Hui the feminine “Han blood.” The “nativization” of Islam among the Hui, i.e. its supposedly never complete “sinicization,” occurs through the figure of the Han woman. In Part I of this dissertation, I trace the itinerary of this figure in both historiographical narratives of the Hui in the early twentieth century and the organizational variations of their contemporary life as Muslims in a swiftly-changing China. In Part II, I move to a more general level, and study two major institutions in the Chinese state’s governance of ethnic difference, namely ethnic regional autonomy and ethnic cadre. I situate them within the socialist tradition and unpack their specificity in contrast to other political configurations in the governance of ethnic difference (e.g. -
